The Wild Horses Guitar

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

What do you think Edge is using on the studio version. I think its the Explorer I know he used The LP on Zoo and the Casino on Vertigo

Could have been the Les Paul Custom in the studio.

But I also think that it is possible that it could have been a Stratocaster. There is a clip of him playing "...Horses" w/a Stratocaster during the dress rehearsal.

It's possible that in the studio with Lanois and Eno there were able to get a great thick sound but live, not so much and hence his switching to the Les Paul Custom.

But there could be other guitars too.
Yep. There is acoustic. That was brought to the fore for the Temple Bar remixes. If you listen to the Achtung Baby Working Tapes, Salome' (various AB era studio bootlegs), the the song was more acoustic / Temple Bar mix-like in it's earlier incarnations as "Don't Turn Around" and "Morning Child".

In the clip above, Bono is playing along. Clip quality is horrible. It looks like Bono is playing his ES175, live. That is not to say that he played on or played that guitar on the album version, that is uncertain.

Yea there is so acoustic on there but I think its the Explorer and the Gibson hollow body ( I forgot what it is called) :D
Guessing that you are referring to Edge's tobacco finish Gibson ES-330; which he used for "One" (during Zoo TV).

Keep in mind, just because it's in the promo video...

...does not mean necessarily that it was used on the studio recording. There are countless videos that show him using guitars that were not used live nor in the studio on specific tracks.

I think the pic that I posted in the other thread that shows them in Hansa studio's they were playing wild horses bono was playing his dove and edge was using the custom.....just a theory live he played the custom.

I don't know.....It does not sound like a strat song to me.....Edge did use the casino and the Explorer (once) during the Vertigo tour.

Yea forsure! Like Edge used it in the vid for real thing.

If you read into some Edge interviews around the ATYCLB sessions, it seems like he didn't touch the Explorer for songwriting since the mid 80's anymore and then decided to pull it out again for the Beautiful Day riff in 2000. If you go along with that, it's likely the Explorer wasn't used. (Side question: Was the Explorer ever in action in the 90's? It wasn't during POP, even for I Will Follow, but they did play IWF on some ZooTV concerts...did he use it there or was the guitar really unused for over a decade?) *

Second, Edge seemed to be very fond of Strats end 80's/beginning 90's, if you see how many songs he played with them and then later from POP on changed alot of those tunes to LP eventually (New Year's Day and One come to mind immediately).

Not proof that he did use a Strat, but may be a good lead.

...and for what it's worth, to me Horses sounds like single coil and not humbucker.

* Just sorta gave my own answer: Remembered he played it for Ultra Violet.

Other than "UltraViolet" (live, uncertain about the studio), it seems that the Explorer got little use from JT tour until recording of ATYCLB.

In fact, I can't think of a JT song that was recorded with the Explorer. It's possible that UF might have been the last album it was used for until ATYCLB.

Although, there's not been a lot of talk of the recording of Zooropa... so it's possible that it came out for a guitar part... but for the most part... Seems not much from UF to ATYCLB.

As for I Will Follow during the Zoo tours...

The one time that it was played in 1992 (Mexico) it was the Washburn Woodstock Festival acoustic.

It appears that he used the Peavey guitar with the piezo

Seems that guitar, being the B-Stage guitar for a number of dates, was also used for "...Found" at the Verona show.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpzH-gksggc&feature=related

I'm thinking it is possible that it could have been the charcoal Clapton Stratocaster (with the snake and skeleton painted on it.

And there are a number of photos of Edge with that one in the studio.

What picture is of them playing "...Horses"? And how you are certain that it what they are playing?

Are you talking about the new photo? From the documentary? Because what they use in that isn't necessarily what they used then. Bono didn't have the black Elvis Dove then.

PS: The only reason that he used the Explorer for "...Horses" on Vertigo (Hawaii) was that he was using it for "Angel of Harlem", Bono saw a fan with a sign and had him brought on stage, and the guy wanted to play "...Horses" on piano. Instead of changing out guitars Edge went with what he already had.

To me, the studio Wild Horses sounds like a Les Paul bridge pickup.

This demo of the SDD3KP sounds an awful lot like an LP bridge:

I said "I think" I am pretty sure (not positive) That that's one of the only songs on "Babby" that have acoustic on it.

I know thats why he used the "Explorer" in Hawaii ..... But he did use the "Explorer" Its wired that edge uses he Explorer on "Angel" now

"...Horses" one of the only songs on Baby to have acoustic"? No. Listen closer. "One" has acoustic... Lanois played acoustic along on at least one of not more tunes. I've seen various pics of him with an acoustic in the studio during the AB sessions.

If you have it, you can see Lanois and Edge both with acoustics on page143 of the book 'U2 The Best of Propaganda'

The songs on Achtung Baby sound like they have so many layers of tracks in them that God knows what could be mixed deep into the background of each one.

True......what songs do here it on? I here it on one and horses.

"One", "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses"...

There could be 'treated' acoustics too. "Trying To Throw Your Arms..." comes to mind. Live he used the Washburn, Takamine and the Peavey with the Piezo pickup.

0:43 into the following video, you see the Washburn again:

Such was also the case during Pop. I don't remember the interview off the top of my head but, the main riff on Discotheque (studio) was an acoustic ran through lots of gear.

Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses

Use ear-buds or headphones and you can distinguish some of the different parts better.

You've got the big distorted guitar in the left channel on the intro.

One of the reasons I thought it could the Clapton, is listen in the left channel about 1:09/1:10. You hear the note bend. Could be slight use of the tremolo bar. It could be merely bending the neck of any of the other guitars a bit.

You hear that bending part continue in the left channel during the 2nd verse.

At 1:12 in, you get the 'melody' guitar part added.

Chorus you hear a rhythm guitar in right channel sort of slashing away at chords. Melody guitar bit in the left channel.

Third verse is similar to the first. The tension of the overdriven bent not isn't there.

Bridge: Chords overdriven chords in the left. Sounds like some acoustic underneath. Melody bits in the right channel.

So yes, there is a lot going on there to make up 'the guitar part'
