I'm not sure how I missed out on this song for so long, maybe it was my dislike of almost all things ATYCLB. But when I watched the Sao Paulo proshot, I just remembered how much I love that song - and especially the acoustic version.

The chords above work fine for standard but the live acoustic version and the studio acoustic version with Bono and Edge is in open E tuning. I'll copy here what I posted back in November when they played on Conan:

Here are the chord shapes. I just finished watching the performance from Conan and they’re all correct except I’m not so sure about the G# towards the end of the song. Almost every time Edge plays that chord they cut to a shot that has the mic stand in front of his hand. I’ve offered two shapes (personally I think the full barred chord works better) but you can decide what sounds better to you. Any way, I don’t have time right now to put the chords to the lyrics but it’s pretty straight forward. If you know the song in standard tuning, it won’t take to long to replace these chord shapes. Feel free to take the chords and line them up to the lyrics.

Thanks for the chords guys, gives me something to work on! Though the second one seems really, really difficult. Still, , no pain no gain, eh?

Another way is to leave in standard tuning.But instead of playing the chords in there full barre chord format just slide up the E shape to the G# A B etc positions.

Though the tuning stated above is obvioulsy correct playing it the way I do gives it a nice "similar" sort of sound without re tuning.

The only thing with the way I play it is the D chord has to be barred as it doesnt sound right with the droning open strings.
It then jumps out as being a bit too bright for the song. Beggars cant be choosers tho.

Moving the E shape up the neck and playing the open strings is used a lot and I love the sound of it.

Zoo Tv version of stay is played this way

as Is High & Dry by Radiohead. Same chords as Stay but changed around a bit.

Early morning rain Gordon Lightfoot can be played that way too.
and Yellow by Coldplay to name a few.

Mess about with it. It is a great way of turning electric songs into accoustic tunes as those open strings really fill out the sound and totally change the way the song sounds.
