Night # 2. "Magnificent":

  • The Edge: Gretsch Country Gentleman (walnut finish)
  • Adam: Gibson RD Artist bass (natural finish) / Aguilar cabinets (Aguilar amp too, me thinks)
  • Larry: Yamaha Oak Custom drum kit (silver sparkle finish)
 
A little bit of information on the RD Artist bass:

Has Adam used a Gibson RD Artist before? Yep. He's had one, as least, since the Achtung Baby sessions.

:lol: Yea it seems so! Edge is playing golden oldie guitars while Adam suddenly has all this new stuff!

He so NEEDS to play the Warwicks. Especially the Buzzard! On a song where Edge plays his Explorer pretty please.
 
I wonder what tonights tune will be...

...my guess is "No Line On The Horizon" with Edge playing the Casino, Bono perhaps strumming along on the Irish Falcon and Adam with the black Precision w/white pickguard (although you KNOW he should be sportin' the Warwick Buzzard or the Stryker!)
 
^^No kidding. I don't think we've seen any new guitars from Edge this time around but Adam is more than making up for it. I wonder who's finding and buying the new basses (even if this Gibson isn't a new one). It's hard for me to imagine Adam out scrounging through vintage guitar shops.

Btw, Edge's "sweating over a hot stratocaster" comment on Jo Whiley's show made me think how strats have fallen out favor for new songs. What's the last new song Edge used a strat on? Stuck in a moment?
 
Edge changes guitars almost as much as EdgeOrchestra changes his font.

Adam seems to be jealous and is changing up his basses with similar regularity.
 
Not that it is "new" to Edge, but he did pull out the Tele Custom for the BBC shows. As for Edge getting away from the Strat, I think part of it is that U2 seems to always be trying to avoid repeating what they have done before. For example, the comments Edge made about the Explorer on the history of guitar series when he did the riff part on Beautiful Day. The Strat, AC30, mod delay combo is such a signature sound (Pride, Bad, Streets, Still Haven't Found, etc) I speculate that using that combo for anything new might feel like been there, done that.

I could be wrong.
 
I'm simply surprised by how frequently he's going to the Casino all of a sudden.

^Maybe two albums down the road he'll pull the strats back out and the band's reaction will be the same as when the Explorer came back. But the country gents have been sticking around for a while....

Something I noticed in the last one, that I thought I saw earlier too... Larry seems to be using a metal-shell Yamaha snare. That would be a big change as he's used wooden Brady snare drums since during the Love Town tour.
 
:hmm: Interesting, so how many different things is Larry now using?

Do you have any clue what the black and white 'switches' are on the bottom of the artist bass? They're right next to where the cable plugs in and I've no clue what exactly they are.

Lawrence, like Adam has new toys and now approaches.

New for Larry:

  • Yamaha Oak Custom kit. (drums from last two tours had Beech wood shells, Oak is harder. That's right... I said it... Larry has hard wood) :lol:
  • A metal snare drum. I need a closer look but it looks to be a Yamaha.
  • The Roland electronic pad to the left of his hi-hats (use thus for the "Let Me In The Sound" bit on "Get On Your Boots".
  • Latin Percussion bongos (not sure of the model, again... needing a closer look at the badge on the bongos)
  • Moving the ride (low) over the bass drum.
  • Moving the LP drum set tamborine where the ride cymbal was.
  • In the studio, Larry used the black oyster finish Ludwig (brand) drum kit.
  • In the studio, Larry used Zildjian A Custom cymbals (both Zildjian and Ludwig were thanked in the credits, along with main stays - Yamaha [drums]and Paiste [cymbals]

ADAM - As for the RD Artist bass, it has a lil graphic showing what switch does what.

The short answer is that the switch above the output jack is the pickup selector.

The switch above that is a 3-way switch. Toward the bridge = brighter tone. Middle = neutral. Away from bridge = expansion compression.

Seems like a lot of change in kits suddenly. :hmm: It must really mean there's a big change with this album! I'm interested wether old songs will sound different on the kit.
I like the silver sparkly one :up: very shiny!:D

And thanks, so it's similar to the fender pickup switch, and the 2nd is similar to a tone knob.

I think there was a change in approach. And a lot of the song, judging by interviews, actually started from the use of the Roland V-Drum electronic kit and loops made by Larry with that kit.

As for the ride cymbal and tamborine changing places... He probably realized that the ride is used more and it make more sense for it to be in a more natural position - low - over the bass drum. Might have to do with Larry's long time issues with his back too. By having it in a more natural position and not having to turn to the right to play the side might be less pain issues or potential pain issue.

As for the drum sound being different... it is different in tone to some extent. The shallower rack tom is a bit more legato and punchy. The tone of the Oak vs Beech is a bit more punchy too. And the use of a metal snare drum is noticeable (to me at least) as it's got a bit less warmth but more 'crack' to it.

In a nut shell, sort of. :D Athough your average tone knob doesn't have a compression setting. And the RD does have tone knobs. It just has a switch that has a bright setting, neutral = tone will adhere to that of the tone knobs alone and the third setting adding compression.
