HTDAAB DVD: "eternal" Vertigo riff

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

It's just the main Vertigo riff:

-----------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------
-7-9-9---7-9-9---7-9----------------
-7-9-9---7-9-9---7-9--7-7-7-7-6-5
-5-7-7---5-7-7---5-7--7-7-7-7-6-5
----------------------------5-5-5-5-4-3

Yup, lots of practice.

Try also stretching out your fingers throughout the day when you're not playing. Don't do anything painful, just gently stretch them from time to time and it will help your flexibility.

So serious. *pulls a solemn face*. Ok, I'll officially make guitar my 3rd instrument! After the clarinet and violin.

I'll ask about the D chord 1st okay? The very 1st one.

finger 2 (index) on string 5. (a D)
finger 3 (middle) on string 4 (fret 7)
finger 4 (ring) on string 3 (fret 7 also)

TORTURE!

First of all, you're incorrectly naming the fingers. For guitar, it is
finger 1: index
finger 2: middle
finger 3: ring
finger 4: little finger

Second, that chord is a lot easier if you fret it like
finger 4: string 3
finger 3: string 4
finger 1: string 5

:)

if you are a beginner at playing guitar, here is some advice. i think before you focus on playing specific songs, you should first get all the basic chords down (open chords and barre chords), as well as getting good at switching between chords fast, and also know what each note is on each fret. that is how you should first start out on guitar. it will help you down the road i think.

I wholeheartedly second that. . . vertigo is not (by any means) a good song to learn to play guitar (or u2 for that matter). Try mastering something easy like Yahweh (Acoustic) that will teach you chords - learn the basics before (re-?)learning barre chords and go from there.

Out of sheer curiousity, how does one fret with their thumb? :)

I do fret with my thumb actually, on Sometimes...

Code:
e ---------------------------------------|
B ----2-3-2-----2-3-2----2-3-2-----2-3-2-|
G ----2-2-2-----2-2-2----2-2-2-----2-2-2-|
D ----2-2-2-----2-2-2--------------------|
A -0--------0-0--------------------------|
E --------------------[b]3[/b]--------[b]3[/b]-[b]3[/b]-------|

e -----------------------------------|
B ----2-3-2-------2-3-2--------2-3-2-|
G ----2-2-2-------2-2-2--------2-2-2-|
D ----2-2-2--0-0---------------2-2-2-|
A --------------------------0--------|
E -[b]2[/b]--------------------0-[b]2[/b]----------|

The notes typed in bold, I fret with my thumb. :)

I meant to say besides 'E' and rarely 'A' -- I use my thumb too on SYCMIOYO. . .

Excellent point! :)

For some bizarre reason I thought thumb-fretting on Sometimes was just something I did. Cool.

Hey, we only have so many fingers. . .

Now, if only my thumb wasn't completely numb all of the time, things would be much better. . . :)

If you want a nice exercise song-focused, try desire. Easy chords, fast changes, will give you some headaches in the very beginning, but then Itll be nice. Then, Angel of harlem, When love comes to town, one, so many...
Later you can focus on riffs and solos. This is my suggestion.
