How to achieve a 12 string sound without a 12 string?

if you have a whammy set it at one octave up and put it low in the mix. thats how i do it with my hd500.. not 100% but it's something

Most harmonizers can do it BUT they do sound a bit synthetic and leave some 'odd' overtones.

The Jangle Box could help get a jangly Rick-ish tone. But not necessarily a 12-string.

Fender makes a VG Stratocaster. It is a 'modeling' guitar. It has a knob for 'tunings' and 'modeling, similar to a Line 6 Variax.

It mimics Strats, Teles, Humbucker pickups (Gibson), 12 String...

The Tribute Edge in Joshua Tree has (or at least had) one. While it isn't a main Stratocaster for most shows, I know of him using it when travelling to farther shows (long distance/flyin involved) - where toting multiple guitars isn't practical.

I have an EHX POG I and I find that much better to emulate a 12-string than with any whammy. Obviously it's also not 100%, but my WH-2 detunes pretty nasty (even low in the mix) and with the POG you have much more possibilities to alter and somewhat find that sound.

My gripe with the POG and 12 string is that the B and e strings aren't an octave apart on a 12-string guitar, but the POG makes them so.

Of course, but it's as close as you can get w/out using an actual 12-string simulator. But as you say you won't nail the 12 string sounds either way unless you've really got one.
