Using a Les Paul makes a huge difference. I was teaching myself the opening riff to Paradise City, and even with the chorus effect and reverb, it didn't really sound like it until I played it on a Les Paul at a store.

I would say so, definitely.

The amazing thing about Appetite is that is almost sounds like a live album, without the crowd noise. It really sounds like each of those songs were recording in one take in one room.

My guitar instructor knows the dude who recorded Appetite and Illusions, and it's not easy to get Slash's sound. Basically he has a real expensive Gibson and Marshal, we all know that. But when he records he uses 20 mics placed at strategic locations throughout the room to get his increadibly thick sound.

yeah he uses reverb on welcome to the jungle thats the only gnr song i know on guitar
=not a big slash fan

you could try sum Seymour Duncan Alnico pro II
humbuckers as ive read he had them in his les
paul at sum point also roll back the tone on the
les paul slighty should help. And the marshall amps
will make a huge difference,he now uses a ground
control pro midi pedal and his tech kicks in the various
effects for him when hes out on the stage..

im a fan of Slash but never tried to copy him though
guess its all in the hands, give him a telecaster and
hed prob sound the same:)
