A Game

Based on the preview clips and U2.com clips we've heard so far, try to guess the guitars Edge uses on each song.

NLOTH: Les Paul and Telecaster
Magnificent: Telecaster (seen in a U2.com clip)
MOS: Who the hell knows?
Unknown caller: Les Paul
IGCIIDGCT: Ric 360-12
GOYB: Les Paul
Stand Up Comedy: Les Paul
Fez: Who the hell knows?
White as Snow: Martin Dreadnaught? No way to know.
Breathe: Les Paul and Ric 360-12
Cedars: Strat?

Bonus if you can figure out what effects are used, although I don't know how that can ever really be known.

it sounds like the majority of the album is played on a telecaster

That's kind of what I'm thinking after hearing the whole thing.

I don't know, I feel like I hear the Explorer on at least the chiming hook part of Magnificent - it's got that "Beautiful Day" sound.

Sounds can indeed be deceiving but so can promo video clips.

Are you sure it wasn't the Gibson Explorer all the way, if not the bulk of "Beautiful Day"?

While it may be possible, I am not certain that one of the Les Paul's was involved.

Yes, I know of the one 'Eze' version of the Beautiful Day video of Edge with his 30th Anniversary "Gibson" Goldtop but that may have been for 'video' purposes. No all guitars seen in the videos are the ones used on the studio versions. After all, in the video - Bono is playing his Gretsch Country Club and he yet to have played guitar on "Beautiful Day" live - hence a 'video' moment.

Example?

"Walk On". The "Walk On" video shows Edge with his 1996 49th Anniversary Telecaster - the one he's used for "Sunday Bloody Sunday" the last 2 tours. But in the live it was all Gibson Les Paul Custom and in the studio it was a Les Paul w/Gibson Explorer for the solo.

Not sure yet what was used on each track. I know that the "Death By Audio "Supersonic Fuzz Gun" was on NLOTH and GOYB. May be in other places.

There's a lot of pitch shifting effects. Could be the whammy set up 2 octaves in places, similar to the middle section of "Beautiful Day" or it could be Death By Audio "Harmonic Transformer" is some spots.

There is a mandolin in "White As Snow". There was a piccy of Edge with one in Fez, an Ovation. (I posted that in it's own thread)

Tobacco Telecaster appears in a lot of the U2.com videos, as does a white Gibson LP Custom, (his "All Because of You" era) Epiphone Casino, a White Falcon (not the one from the Pride video)...

...sounds like there is plenty of 12-string Rickenbacker 330. I'm not sure if it's the 1965 Fireglo or the 19663 Mapleglo or a mixture. There is a picture in the Jan 22 Rolling Stone of Edge in Fez with the Mapleglo...

Seems he's using Telecasters more over the past few years. GOYB video and the 3 awards show performances seem to show that the "Vertigo" 1966 Fender Telecaster is being used. But again, that doesn't mean it was 'the' one in the studio but it doesn't mean that it might not be either...

So many guitars! Can't wait to see what he use for the new songs - live. Should be great fun!

I can see how people can tell the models of the guitars obviously, but I'm baffled as to how anybody knows the years of the guitars.

So far, from what we've seen played...
  1. NLOTH: ?
  2. Magnificent: Telecaster (seen in a U2.com clip)
  3. MOS: Who the hell knows?
  4. Unknown caller: ?
  5. IGCIIDGCT: ?
  6. GOYB: Telecaster
  7. Stand Up Comedy: ?
  8. Fez: ?
  9. White as Snow: ? (Although there is a mandolin in it, and there was a piccy of Edge with an Ovation mandolin while they were in Fez.)
  10. Breathe: Casino (French TV show 2/23/2009)
  11. Cedars: ?

From the studio pictures and footage, there didn't seem to be any Stratocasters used! Although, there probably is in spots.

Epiphone Casino, 12-string Rics, Les Paul Custom, Gretsch Country Gent and White Falcon and Fender Telecasters seem to be getting use for this album.

Like autos, there are be differences... even slight, that will help one tell the vintage of a guitar.

Also there are also past interviews in guitar magazines and such.

I've studied them and have read books on various makes and models so that also helps in vintage identification.

Most importantly, it takes a certain amount of OCD to do what I do!

There was one little background guitar fill on one of the songs that I thought was a Strat in the #2 position, but I can't even remember which song right now.

Hmm, looks like he may decide to go with a Gretsch for the live version of Magnificent:

Ok, now that I listened again, in Magnificent, if you listen right after the solo as the song kicks back into the chorus, a new guitar comes in at a fairly faint volume panned to the left side. It keeps playing for at least a few bars -- I can't tell if it persists until the song ends. That guitar sounds like a Strat in the #2 position to me, and so far that's the only Strat I've heard on the album.
