From the stills that someone posted at U2 Rec Yahoo Group, it looks like Edge is using at least (2) Death By Audio pedals for "...Boots..." at the Grammys.

Cool sounds, but not cool prices. Booteek pedals are like magic, they distract you with what seems like a new sound and lots of sales talk when 99.99% of the time they are just tricked up old pedals, like fuzz faces and tubescreamers. I wouldn't be surprised if the fuzz gun turns out to be yet another fuzz face or big muff with extras.

My advice, learn about electronics, join places like freestompboxes.org and diystompboxes, find out what the booteekers have done to those circuits and build them yourself. It's not rocket science and it will save you a lot of cash you can spend on other, more useful stuff. Edge can afford it, most of us can't.

It can be cost effective to build some things oneself. But not all have the knowledge, time and/or want to build electronic themselves.

Many boutique pedals offer a more eclectic range of tones outside of the 'cookie cutter' / more mass produced items from Digitech & Boss. They are not 'magic' nor are they 'distracting'.

So if money alone is the issue, perhaps building from a kit might be the way to go. For many, though more pricey, boutique pedals offer the desired results.

It'd be nice if there was a program out there so you could build your own digital pedals from scratch. Like in a Garageband AU environment or as a Line6 plugin or something.

In the US, the POG retails for a bit over $200...still relatively pricey, but not impossible to afford. Eat Ramen noodles for a couple of months.

I just hate to see fellow guitarists get ripped off by flashy advertisements about the latest new big thing to hit pedal land when all they're really buying is a tricked out Digitech or Boss pedal for 2x or 3x what a Digitech or Boss costs. Especially 'just because The Edge has it'.

Nobody should have to pay $300 for what is essentially max $30 worths of electronics components. To me it seems more cost effective to use those $994 and learn how to do it yourself. Give a man a fish and he can feed himself for a day. Learn him how to fish and he can feed himself for the rest of his life.

Now if its a more eclectic range of tones you're after from your Boss pedal, the DIY forums are abound with the free mods to do so. And some of those booteekers, a certain guy whose name starts with a Z and ends with an X in particular, use those forums to come up with ideas for their next overpriced releases anyway.

Maybe Zachary Vex gets ideas there but he makes wonderful toys. And the non-hand painted Fuzz Factory version is $179.00; that is not so horrible.

Line 6 - ToneCore DSP Developer Kit

You have to be able to manage code (they mention Symphony DSP), but such a thing does exist.

POG is first on my list but the Death By Audio and Z-Vex gear that Edge is using are all pretty great toys too.

The MICRO POG does the same work and costs much less. I bought mine second hand on Ebay for 139 euro (150 incl. shipping - that's 200 $). "Crazy Tonight" sounds EXACTLY the same on my Casino + Vox AC30 + SD1.

Sorry Mick, I'm on a business trip at the moment. I'll try to make you something later.
Anyway: to play stuff of the new album you SURELY need the (Micro)POG. There are so many songs where Edge uses it: for example the end of No Line On The Horizon, the verse of Magnificent (POG + Shimmer), Crazy Tonight....: my setting is : DRY SIGNAL 100%, OCTAVE DOWN 11 o'clock (tick tock), OCTAVE UP 2 o'clock.

(I forgot to say last week that I also use my SDD2000 for the delay on Crazy Tonight, of course).
