Its just forced and unnecessary.
Its like that kid back in highschool that everyone knew that would try incessantly to create new terms or phrases for things that didn't make sense or would never stick.

I have to say, I have NEVER heard, seen or read anyone calling U2 "the 2" on any forum, radio show, TV show, book, movie, TV show or song (or any other media). I suspect this is because "the 2" sounds ridiculous.
If they were called "The Sounds of the Irish 2", then sure.
If they were called "The Sounds of the Irish 2", then sure.
