At least their attempt at a rock song never went down the American Soul route this time.

indeed it is. My first listening was horrible. I didn't even finish the song. I gave another try the day after and the song got stuck in my head.

interesting indeed.
The fact that Bono didn't put 1000 words in any verse probably helped too. it let the musical part breathe a little and probably that made me more focus on the guitar and bass.

Nowhere near the Blondie ripoff in the chorus. Or Edge ripping off the Clash in the verses.

Seemingly vertigo rips off dirty boots by sonic youth? According to rolling stone magazine anyway.

Everything rips everything off. Most times it's unintentional, like when the Stones ended up giving a credit to k.d. Lang.

The Blondie thing? Yea, ok. Sure. Probably unintentional, but the one I'm Free part is quite close to Call Me. Nothing else in the song is, but that part? Yea. They may have to do a Stones / k.d. Lang.

The idea that the riff is ripped off from the Clash is absurd. Name the song it's pulled from. We'll wait.

In reality there are probably hundreds of songs that use the same basic riffs.

I don't think the riff is from the clash, but the power chords during the Atomic City part definitely has London calling vibes.

I’m not sure if you’re joking about the riff but the guitar part during the atomic city bridge is right from London Calling.

I mean there's a million songs with that kind of riff, but sure.

The bigger issue for me is that U2 used to develop their own ideas, and now this is the 3rd time recently that they have borrowed riffs/vocal patterns from other bands.

Didn’t ThEdge somewhat borrow the Bunnymen riff off Back of Love for In God’s Country?

And “Do You Feel Loved” openly used parts from Naked Funk/Alien Groove Station..

They do this now and then. But in Pop they could say they weee “sampling” because it was cool at the time and fit what POP was supposed to be about.

So people are bent that the admitted Blondie/Clash homage sounds like Blondie/Clash?

Just watched a new (to me) video of the performance and wow, Larry does not look happy. Even by Larry standards he looks like he'd rather be literally anywhere else other than on the back of a lorry, doing fake drumming in front of a Vegas casino.

Typical Larry, really. And he may not exactly have been physically comfortable doing repetitive motions for a few takes.

Yes, not reading anything into it at all, just admiring his devotion to staying in character.
