War Child
Hey everyone, just thought I'd quickly review my day at the BBC yesterday.
So we arrived at about 10am, and there was already a queue snaking around the BBC Radio Theatre! We joined the queue, and people began filtering in behind us. Just up the street, some fans were standing behind a metal barrier, so I went to check it out. I joined them for a bit, while my place in the queue was held, but the wristbands for the gig were being given out, so I had to run back to the queue to get one! I reckon I just missed out on meeting them, coz I heard a bloke shout "OMG BONOOO", overhead another bloke say 'ahh yeah, he signed for ages, blah blah', and someone else stating the obvious - "Edge was wearing a woolly hat".
The queue began moving then, so I gave up on meeting them, and stayed put. BBC cameras were around, filming the queue and asking various questions to random people. We had to remove our coats, belts, rings, blah blah and do the security check. Then we were escorted into seperate rooms, 0-100, 100-200, or whatever. We waited there for about half an hour, until a random woman came and let us into the hall!
It was TINY, we couldn't believe it! We were met with a sloping floor, and above us on the balcony were VIPs (we think?!). Someone had draped an Irish flag over the balcony, which was a nice touch. I wanted to lean on the balcony at the very left, but there was a scary security guard woman, who wanted to keep a clear space for fire exit escape at all times. Couldn't even tell you how many times she reiterated "You have to keep behind this line!"
The doors opened several times, causing the crowd to "oooh" and "ahhh" and "LOVE YOU BONO!" from some bloke. Greg James (Radio 1 DJ) finally appeared, and announced that the band would be onstage in 20 minutes. Everyone sighed and couldn't be arsed waiting that long. Yes, we ARE spoilt.
They then took the initiative at last and actually played Radio 1 through the speakers! The news played, hardly anyone listened, and then Jo Whiley seemed to appear suddenly. She announced the band, and they came out, woohoo!
I saw Edge first, what a legend! They were totally amazing, obviously. Get On Your Boots kicked in, it was so loud and sounds AMAZING live! I just wish everyone got more into it - I'm sure the people on the front row were, but everyone around me was just standing there, lol. We had a couple of journalists in front, taking up valuable space, just writing notes the whole time. They played Get On Your, Magnificent, Beautiful Day, Breathe.
Greg James told everyone "the bad news" that it was over, and they weren't coming back. Everyone was booing, not content that they'd just had an amazing free gig?! I heard rumours afterward that they sang SexyBack?! So either they came back on after we left, or they're talking shit lmao.
We filed out into the sunshine, and I overheard someone say "it really is a beautiful day". Boom Cha!
