Edge spills some beans

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

well believe it or not
from a very reliable source, some Universal desk here in Europe has a pre-release info on The Unforgettable Fire Remaster (collector box ala JT set) witch states an early 2009 release (first quarter)
there is absolutly no preview yet for a new u2 album during that time

plus for an act as big as u2 we would have get some more serious rumors concerning 2009 tour dates which is not the case

so get ready for some further postponment i think

I got absolutely flamed for suggesting late 2009 a couple of months ago.
But now that we're already in mid November with no news, it's beginning to seem not so ridiculous huh?

I dont really care if it comes out 2 years from now as long as it is a good record that will blow peoples minds, although it might be hard to do with some.

People whining about release date are fighting a losing battle, it will get done when it gets done.

U2009 sounds good to me :)

We might still get a tour in summer/fall 2009 if the album is released in March.

There have been many tour rumours, stories about U2 talking to promoters, video shoots, photo shoots etc.

I'm sure the band and producers wouldn't talk how they talk about an album that is far from being finished.

Late 2009 is certainly possible, but with what we heard so far I'm still going with Spring 2009, just in time for the tour - unless we get absolutely no news until New Year's.

It would not make sense for U2 to hold the album for another year. I mean look.. we know they are pretty much done or close to finishing, and Bono has said he doesn't want to hold it for too much longer. I think U2 know that it is going to piss off a lot of people if they hold it for more then early 2009. It totaly doesn't make any sense to sit on a finished album until late 2009. TRUST me in march 2009 I will be able to say I told you so.

yeah, still believe for an early 2009 release.

I don't trust any source of information. The only info that I will trust will be to hear the new single on the radio.

I've been saying Spring 09 for the better part of half a year

and I got flamed in August when I said that would be the case

and i'm still on pace to be right

So i hear ya!

If it gets postponed again, then I am going to cave and listen to the beach clips. I am NOT waiting for next November, and I seriously don't think that will be the case, anyway. They would make a lot of people very angry if they pushed it back again.

Yeah, they might anger a lot of people if they push it back to Fall '09; but it will be one of those "I can't believe they waited this freakin' long to make an album...hmm, guess I'll go buy it." types of anger. So, I don't truly believe they are concerned with angering people by postponing things. Though I hate to say it, it is feasible they could still postpone yet again. Let's just hope they don't "finish" the album to death like they could have if they took this long with POP and like they were on the verge of doing with Bomb.

For all the nay-sayers here, check out the "So What Have We Got So Far?" thread at the top of the page. It looks like Bono is filming a video! This could be promising.

You summed it up beautifully!
Let's remember what Lanois said a few days ago, about how he's going to London shortly after the 18th of this month to spend 10 days which should finish the album off. So it should all be wrapped up by end of November. Hopefully an announcement of release date and title early December. By the time you allow for mastering, photo shoots, etc, I'm still saying March. We really have nothing to worry about unless RECORDING GOES INTO NEXT YEAR. Then, yes, we might have a delay.
I'll just remind everyone that there doesn't HAVE to be 3-4 months between announcing and releasing. The latest Metallica album only gave 6 weeks notice.

All indications point to finishing up the mixing over the course of the next few weeks.
Given the delay I imagine most of the artwork/marketing efforts are well underway. I believe we'll get the album in the March-April 2009 timeframe.

If the new album is not released by November 2009, it will officially known as a "comeback album" (being more than 5 years after its preceding album).

Imagine....media all over the world will be saying "the most eagerly awaited comeback album since Chinese Democracy".

Does anyone feel like U2 actually went away? This album doesn't even feel like a comeback album to me. To me it's just the next album. I am just excited to hear what they're going to do and I await the next phase of U2's career. To me they didn't really go away. With all of the re-releases, the greatest hits album, the song with Green Day, the 3D movie, the books... Yeah.

I'm just banking on this album to be different, maybe a different sound, something to really reflect a change in their path.

That's true of most bands, but as we've seen in the past, U2 need the rehearsal time to properly prepare for the tour that everyone's expecting in spring/summer 2009. If the album isn't out until February or March, that doesn't leave a ton of lead time given that Jan/Feb/March will be filled with promotional appearances, interviews, etc.

EDITED to add, yay, I'm at 700 posts! Well, actually more than that but I lost a bunch during the server switch, but still, 700!

The Edge is quoted in the todays Mirror newspaper stating that the album will be out either March or April 09. :applaud:

NICE!!! Maybe those tour starting next summer in Europe people were right! Don't really care if we have to wait until next fall in the states to see them, I just want to hear some new material. First single will probably be released sometime in January then. HURRY UP 2009!!!

Side note: TODAY, as in November 18th, was the original release date before they pushed it back. Ugh... I guess I'll just wait until next week for some new Killers and Coldplay. Not the same though.

Haha, until we hear that something came up, and the album is being pushed back till the fall :)

I don't see it though. The latest clip on U2.com really gives me a strong feeling that the album is done, or at the very least, the title has been decided. We know that if they tour for this album, and it comes out in spring, they will need to get booking venues very soon.

It'll just be nice to hear something new, and CLEAR. If it's released in April, that means a single probably in late Jan to early Feb. And if it's March, then we have Jan.

Just bear in mind this is the Mirror. One of those rags that regularly feature ticket offers for non-existant U2 gigs.

There go all the Fall 2009 and 2010 folks...

Don't you see the advantages in being a pessimist? If those folks (I am not one of them) are wrong, they are stoked that the album is coming out sooner than they thought, and if they are right they are stoked because they can say "I told you so"...so either way they win. Pessimism is really the easiest and safest way to go.

Optimists like us take a chance and put ourselves at risk by having hopes and dreams which could be dashed to pieces. Therein lies the downfall of optimism. However, the positive side of optimism is that we don't have to spend our lives being miserable bastards.

The "I'm a pessimist, that way I'm never dissapointed" thinking always seemed too cynical to me.

Spring 2009 was realistic based on the data we had.

HA!

whats you're next lecture? Capitalism vs. Socialism?

Seriously though, its no secret that pessimism is the easy way to go. There's nothing to put forth and take a chance with pessimism...no risk.

But as someone put it in another thread...doesn't some of the greatest work in music come from musicians who are living life as completely miserable bastards? Meloncholy sounds a whole lot more interesting then happy in most people's books.
