I've been listening to Daft Punk's latest album and it's brilliant! It's truly an "album". Not what many expected I'm sure but very lively, creative & different. Can U2 come anywhere near as far as re-inventing themselves again, if we get a new album this year. Your thoughts...

by the way... I know that they are in different genre's etc. etc. but I'm referring to the creativity side.... with Danger Mouse.

If each song segues into another that would be creative. The feel of a single session. Although we would all know how painstaking that process would be to pull it off.

Daft Punk's third best album isn't much of a threat to U2, really, especially since they don't have the same demographic or goals in mind.

And there are far more creative and daring albums that have come out this year than RAM, which is just a throwback record for the most part.

In reply to the title of your post, I don't think U2 has anything left to prove to anyone. They have created 3 decades of great music, many amazing albums, huge, fun world tours, had plenty of hit singles. What more can they possibly achieve? They have nothing left to prove. But are they still capable of making great music? Their record says yes. Even if they never release another album or do another tour, what more could anyone want to accomplish than what they already have?

The tittle of the thread might be a bit confusing, so I apologize. I know that U2 has been around longer and they have different demographics etc. etc. To most U2 fans, they don't have anything else to prove. But to those who doubt... they might. I guess I brought up the discussion because I find it very intriguing how now a days, most albums don't flow the way Daft Punk's seems to. We're living in a "singles" world, not albums. Obviously U2 has a different style. It just got me thinking that it would be awesome if they would get their sh*t together and get something amazing out. NLOTH could've been an amazing album had they not tweaked it too much etc. I still like it except for the middle three songs of the album. Anyhow, I'm just glad to see great music come out and I'm looking forward to U2 doing the same.

BTW - I'm not comparing the two artistically, musically, demographically etc. Just glad to see when artist put their mind to it and go with their gut, they come out big. I wanna see U2 do that once again.

This. QFT.

Yeah, it was a shame about including those over-produced tracks for the blatant purpose of increasing the album's commercial appeal.

They didn't really seem to help and for me just made the album incohesive.

I get what you're saying. It very much is the case that online downloading has made the current era a 'singles' era and people are less likely to download or purchase an entire album, except for the hardcore fans. That being the case, it seems U2 is often concerned with finding a hit single. I think NLOTH was there attempt to make a cohesive album, and it nearly worked, but not quite. I think making cohesive albums, where every track flows into the next and they all go well together is a bit of a lost art. The last album I heard that really accomplished that was Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs"

lmao how do these things even relate
In the context of "Daft Punk's RAM... U2 have a lot to prove", those comments were implying U2's last album was perhaps subpar because of the commercialised tracks blatantly inserted into the middle. Therefore U2 need to lift their game on future albums to match the "brilliance" of RAM.

Though, RAM being brilliant is the thread author's opinion and not my own, I just don't like the midsection of No Line On the Horizon, not because the songs are bad, but because they ruin the cohesion of the album.

We have a subforum for discussing other artists. Should we create a thread every time a great album comes out simply to view it through the prism of how U2 is going to rate against it?

Sometimes this place is really pathetic.

Something falling out of the site taxonomy hardly seems all that consequential in a U2 forum voting on "Worst U2 Song."

Bigger fish and all.

Damn, to think that instead of spending 10 seconds commenting on forum inanity I could have put my time to greater use, like ending poverty in Africa.

Thanks for the guidance!

shit, hasn't Kanye West got a new album coming out soon? U2 are really going to have up their game, guys!

U2 just need to prove that they can still make an album that a) doesn't make me cringe (middle 3 on NLOTH) and b) doesn't put me to sleep (the rest of NLOTH).

You know, this is the reason why I don't come to this forum that often now. A few "fans" tend to bash on others. Obviously, those who are mature enough understood where I was going with this. To those I say thank you for thoughts. Never a dull moment in here.:eyebrow:

i just want to apologise for my post above, it seemed pretty funny to me at the time

Common courtesy is a good thing. I agree that being courteous to each other and avoiding bashing, even if we disagree, is important here. After all, we are all fans of U2.

I've noticed this as well. I don't understand why so many here feel the need to voice their disapproval if the topic isn't to their liking.

If someone can't think of anything relevant to the conversation then simply don't post. Leave the thread for those who can contribute intelligently to the conversation.

Besides, it's the moderators job to monitor the forums and determine whether the topic is suitable, not the users.

Back on topic...

Creatively I think U2 are as good as they've ever been, they're just not releasing their latest efforts due to some egotistical quest to write the "perfect pop song", get the next album "just right" and remain "the best band in the world".

Sad really, because their music isn't the problem, it's the demand for their brand in the mainstream which has diminished.

So their "perfect pop song" mentally is actually hindering them from true brilliance because they're too preoccupied pandering to the mainstream which doesn't care anymore.

Very well put! The mainstream doesn't care about them anymore and yet they want to be the biggest. Doesn't make freaking sense! Just write what you want to write and release it. You have nothing to prove to anybody anymore.

They haven't lost the mainstream at all. They're still one of the biggest and well known bands in the world. They'll continue to get a lot of attention from the media when they release a new album/tour. The next album will sell a few million copies. Etc. Many people still care.

They just aren't hip anymore. But that's because they're getting older.
