Close but not quite for me.

Maybe after more listens.

Rival Sons' Great Western Valkyrie still has it. For now.

It is for me. I haven't been too impressed with music this year, though. If Panda Bear get his record out this year it may challenge U2, but my second favorite record of the year is the Malkmus record, and SoI is much better than it, to my great and joyous surprise.

It's definitely heading up my list right now.

Spoon, The New Pornographers and Ryan Adams all had good releases that I'm loving too

we shall see.

I'm a U2 fan so likely it'll be album of the year. Especially since I like every song and LOVE most of them and will be listening to it for years to come. U2 won't likely win Album of the Year at the Grammys ever again (since they have two) but I'm hoping they can win Rock Album Grammys. It's very CLEAR that the critical establishment has knives out for U2 and probably will for the rest of their career.

For other albums I love:
Turn Blue - The Black Keys (excellent)
They want my soul - Spoon (excellent)
It's Album Time - Todd Terje (excellent)
Morning Phase - Beck (excellent)
The Take Off and Landing of Everything - Elbow (excellent)
High Life - Eno & Hyde (good)
Are we there - Sharon Van Etten (good)
St. Vincent (good)
Lost in the dream - The War on Drugs (good)
Trouble in Paradise - La Roux (good)
Lazaretto - Jack White (good)
A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Sea When Absent (good)

I still have more to listen to. I want to hear more Lykke Li, new Adele, new Aphex Twin, and whatever else shows up. As you can see from my list I don't listen to much Rap/Hip Hop. :reject:

It will be in my top 5 with Natalie Merchant, Reigning Sound, Aphex Twin (presumably) and probably The War on Drugs

I would have to go with the Manic Street Preachers excellent "Futurology" as my album of the year thus far. It was recorded in 2013 along with the 2013-released "Rewind the Film".

Two amazing albums; very different in sound and style; both equally compelling.

It'll be up there, I'm sure.

My list right now (without U2, because I don't know where it fits yet):

Elbow
St Vincent
The War On Drugs

Along with some records by Beach House, Apples in Stereo and Lost in the Trees, U2's latest is among the most consistently good I've heard in the last three or four years.

By the way, if anyone wants to be reduced to a pile of wet flesh on the floor listen to Lost in the Trees' song "This Dead Bird is Beautiful." Just a gorgeous and heartbreaking song about the singer's mother, who committed suicide after being ravaged by cancer.

Language and Perspective by Bad Suns is a fucking incredible record by a breakout SoCal band that I have absolutely loved, but U2 is U2 so yes, best of the year so far for me. Oh, and Lazaretto by Jack White was great as well. (one too many slow songs)

Yellowcard's new record is on the horizon and it really could go both ways!

SoI was a very pleasant surprise for me, and I find myself liking it a lot. That said, it's a good deal outside my top 10 of the year.

The Troubles is the best song I've heard this year, though.

Without Soi, the best new album I've heard was Nick Cave's live album. Lazaretto was mostly honkey tonk, so apart from the few rock tracks, it was of no use to me.

A part of me wishes it could be otherwise, but really nothing compares with U2 for me.

Yeah, this 100%.

SOI is pretty good, but there have been several albums I'd place above it.

Shame they didn't get it in in time for the Grammy's. I'm sure it would be against itself with SOE next year.

Nobody mentioned the Tori album, Unrepentant Geraldines? That one gives SOI a good run for its money. But I think overall SOI is still my emotional and nostalgic favourite.

I would say it's top 50-60 out of the 150 or so I've heard. So no, not the best but not bad.

Exactly, it's not whince inducing or anything. It's like sleeping with a fattie after you haven't wet your whistle for awhile. It's comfortable and fun to be back in the groove, but you know it's a sub-par lay.

Clearly, Interferencers think Big Girls Are Best.
