Oh. I thought they just did that to see if you're legally allowed to drink. (I don't know anything about how those kind of places work.)

It depends on the country, of course (and their laws), and the place. Here it's not that strict, if you are underage you can enter bars and most likely get away with someone buying you beer. But in countries like the UK and Ireland you're not allowed entrance in a pub unless you're over 18. I thought the same applied to the US but I'm not entirely sure. Here that only applies to coffee shops, even if you're an 80 year old bearded dude, no ID, no entrance.
 
So U2... be warned next time you wan't to roll a spliff during your floating pub crawl in Amstersam. :madwife:
