yeah I've wondered that too, lol here we are speculating a deeper meaning and after all this time it only comes down to the fact that he can't remove it without breaking it!

I'm sure it has a deeper meaning, otherwise he wouldn't have worn till he grew into it. But yeah, if he ever has to go in for surgery or something (heaven forbid), that baby's getting cut off.
