Okay-what does this song mean exactly? He talks about "his father's mansions and how he went out the back door and threw away the key-but for the first time I feel loved" . So, why does he feel loved after he rejects his Father's(as in Father in heaven-I think)love? Do I have it all wrong so far? What do you think? Do tell.

I think it's talking about discovering the true meaning of faith and forgiveness, even grace. I think it's talking about after one has accepted Christ, gotten past the "ticket to heaven" stage of faith, and then finding that after one falls away or sins, being welcomed back into the Father's arms of forgiveness. It's after a rejection of the perfect love that you discover how perfect it is! There is mercy!! I think this is the "first time" Bono is talking about.

I totally agree with "filmmaker". Just want
to point at, that Bono is quoting the Bible,
when he talks about his fathers mansion, it?s
relating to John chapter 14 the beginning.
And the line about leaving by the backdoor
is a hint to the act of Judas. And the thing
about throwing away the key relates to Peter
who is given the keys to the Kingdom of God.
So Bono identifies himself with the weakness
of Peter and Judas, and stil he knows about
the richness of God - so he believes in the
forgivenes of God . Therefore - "for the first time I feel love".
Just some thoughts for your inspiration I hope.

I took this as a rejection of God until I heard what you said...
