For me its So Cruel hands down:wave:

We crossed the line
Who pushed who over?
It doesn't matter to you
It matters to me
We're cut adrift
We're still floating
I'm only hanging on
To watch you go down
My love

I disappeared in you
You disappeared from me
I gave you everything you ever wanted
It wasn't what you wanted

The men who love you, you hate the most
They pass RIGHT through you like a ghost
They look for you, but your spirit is in the air
Baby, you're nowhere

Oh...love...
You say in love there are no rules
Oh...love...
Sweetheart,
You're so cruel

Desparation is a tender trap
It gets you every time
You put your lips to her lips
To stop the lie

Her skin is pale like God's only dove
Screams like an angel for your love
Then she makes you watch her from above
And you need her like a drug

Oh...love...
You say in love there are no rules
Oh...love...
Sweetheart,
You're so cruel

She wears my love like a see-through dress
Her lips say one thing
Her movements something else
Oh love, like a screaming flower
Love...dying every hour...love

You don't know if it's fear or desire
Danger the drug that takes you higher
Head in heaven, fingers in the mire

Her heart is racing, you can't keep up
The night is bleeding like a cut
Between the horses of love and lust
We are trampled underfoot

Oh...love... You say in love there are no rules
Oh...love...
Sweetheart,
You're so cruel

Oh...love...
To stay with you I'd be a fool
Sweetheart
You're so cruel

Lemon. Hands down.

Runners-up include TUF, Bad, The Fly, Ultraviolet, Please, and Moment of Surrender.

All of the songs mentioned are excellent, especially Promenade and Heartland

I also would say UTEOTW and MOS

But in my mind the greatest of U2 songs, which to me is more peotry than song is

ONE TREE HILL

I would stay "Stay (Faraway So Close)!" is the best of the best if we're to isolate the lyrics.

Er... "Lemon"?? I dunno, it's not bad, but...

Hm. I'm trying to think of songs in the back of their catelogue that wouldn't be obvious contenders, like "One" or "With or Without You." I'd guess I'd have to give it up for "Red Hill Mining Town" from the Joshua Tree. I also have a soft spot for "The First Time" and "Original of the Species."

If I had to pick one, I'd probably go with Running To Stand Still.

Bono was at an incredible level of lyric writing on both Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, so really you could almost pick any song from either of those records and I'd take it.

i have always loved Until the End of the World's lyrics. whenever i finished tests early in school and had to stay in the room i wrote the lyrics to kill time

Haven't seen you in a quite a while
I was down the hold, just passing time
Last time we met it was a low-lit room
We were as close together as a bride and a groom
We ate the food, We drank the wine
Everybody having a good time
Except you
You were talking about the end of the world

I took the money, I spiked your drink
You miss too much these days if you stop to think
You lead me on with those innocent eyes
And you know I love the element of surprise
In the garden I was the playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You, you were acting like it was the end of the world

In my dreams I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows, they learned to swim
Surrounding me, going down on me
Spilling over the brim
In waves of regret and waves of joy
I reached out for the one I tried to destroy
You, you said you'd wait
Until the end of the world

Moment Of Surrender is really one of my favs in terms of lyrics. It's also quite amazing musically. I love the lyrics in the chorus. I remember buying NLOTH and never getting a chance to listen to the whole thing that day. MOS was one of the songs I'd missed on and I was listening to my iPod before I went to bed and the song came on. I had no idea what it was but the song was just beautiful!

Songs along with MOS for me:

  • UTEOTW
  • Love Is Blindness
  • SYCMIOYO (that one has always really hit home with me)
  • ISHFWILF
  • One
  • Beautiful Day
  • Bad

Please
Running to Stand Still

For now. I will add others later.

For me it's Wave of sorrow ;)

Heat haze rising on Hell's own hill
To wake up this morning took an act of will
You walked through the night to get to today
To bring your children to give them a way

Oh, oh this cruel sun
Its daylight never done
Cruelty just begun
To make a shadow of everyone

And if the rain came
And if the rain came now

Souls bent over without a breeze
Blankets on burning trees
I'm sick without disease
Nobility on its knees

And if the rain came
And if the rain came
Now

Would it wash us all away
On a wave of sorrow
A wave of sorrow

Where now the holy cities
Where all the ancient holy scrolls
Where now the Emperor Menelik
And the Queen of Sheba's gold
You my bride wear her crown
On your finger precious stone
Has every good thing now been sold

Son of sheperd boy now king
What wisdom can you bring
what lyric could you sing
Where is the music of the seraphim

And if the rain came
And if the rain came
Would it wash us all away
On a wave of sorrow
A wave, a wave of sorrow

Blessed are the meek who scratch in the dirt
For they shall inherit what's left of the Earth
Blessed are the kings who have left their thrones
They are bleesed in this valley of dry bones
Blessed are you with an empty heart
From you have nothing from which you cannot part
Blessed is the ego if it's all we've got this hour
Blessed is the voice that speaks truth to power
Blessed is the sex worker's body sold tonight
She works with what she got to save her children's life
Blessed are the deaf who cannot hear her scream
Blessed are the stupid who can dream
Blessed are the tin can cardboard slums
And Blessed is the spirit that overcomes
