Single Greatest Line Of Any U2 Song

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

The ultimate

The most compelling lyric that defines Bono and is designed for all of humanity....

You broke the bonds, and you loosed the chains,
carried the cross and all my shame.....
you know I believe it....

Well I don't know if this is the greatest but it is my favorite:

And we love to wear a badge, a uniform, and we love to fly a flag, but I won't---let others live in hell

This lyric says a lot to me about the then 22 year old Bono. And it still stands up today.

Best Lyric ever by U2:

"Get on your Boots, your sexy boots
you dont know know how beau-tee-ful you are"

If ever I think U2 are larger than life, this lyric reminds me otherwise.
they are really just a bunch of nice irish guys who had the luck of the devil.

Aww be reasonable, not every line can be a masterpiece. But you can't deny they have some great ones, and some really great ones.

(Not to say they still aren't a bunch of nice Irish guys too  )

(wouldn't know about the luck and the devil thing though :hmm: )

"Heard a singer on the radio, late last night. Says he's going to kick the darkness till it bleeds daylight."

That is actually Bono really hearing a line from a song on the radio and then using the act of hearing including the quote as a lyric. The original songwriter of "going to kick the darkness" part, is Bruce Cockburn. The song is Lovers in a Dangerous Time. Bare Naked Ladies actually did a cover of the song early in their career.

My personal fav hasto be The Running to Stand Still lines already listed.
.....scream without raising you voice.

sing your heart out ,sing my heart out
i've found grace inside a sound
i found grace,it's all that i found
(breathe)

To every broken heart
For every heart that cries
Love left a window in the skies
(window in the skies)

and so many more.....

My favorite line right now might be "16th of June, Chinese stocks are going up and I'm coming down with some new Asian virus."

These lines do it for me

I was speeding on the subway
Through the stations of the cross
Every eye looking every other way
Counting down ’til the pain would stop

I found grace inside a sound
I found grace, that's all I found
And I can breathe, breathe now
(Breathe)

You know he got the cure
You know he went astray
He used to stay awake
To drive the dreams he had away
He wanted to believe
In the hands of love
(Exit)
Not that that is particularly great when I look at it, but it always gets to me somehow. I don't know.

If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel
On your knees, boy
(Mysterious Ways)

All on my Facebook page, haha.

I don't know if this has been mentioned but along with ever other line mentioned, I like this one a lot.

I could never take a chance / Of losing love to find romance

There are so many but here are a few of my favs:

In Waves of Regret and Waves of Joy
I reached out for the one I tried to destroy

You say Love Is a Temple, Love the Higher Law...
You ask me to enter and then you make me crawl

I want to run, I want to hide
I want to tear down these walls that hold me inside

In a world a heart of darkness, afire zone
Where poets speak thier heart than bleed for it....
I don't believe in painted roses or bleeding hearts
While bullets rape the night of the Merciful
Actually all of One Tree Hill - beautiful poetry

I must be an Acrobat to talk like this and act like that

every arstist is a canniball, every poet a thief
All kill thier inspiration and sing about thier grief

I've been in every black at the alter of the dark star
my body's now a begging bowl that begging to get back to my heart

Oh Tell me, cherity dance with me turn me around tonight
Up a spiral staircase to the higher ground

Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind

"A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle" (Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World)

Yes, I know he's quoting Gloria Steinem, but I still like this line the best :D

Love that one as well.

Across the field you see the sky ripped open
See the rain through a gaping wound
Pounding on the women and children
Who run
Into the arms
Of America

The last line, . . . "into the arms of America" is just so biting. For years I've loved Bullet the Blue Sky but it wasn't until I understood America's horrific contribution to Central American wars in the 1980s (and the CIA permitting the funding of those wars through drug dealing) that I figured out that the women and children we not running into open arms -- as in human arms -- to protect them, but they are running into the arms -- as in bombs and bullets -- supplied by America.

Bono has written many, many, many fantastic songs and lines, but recently this has been the one I think about the most. Given American presence in the Middle East, this line is still fresh.

How's that for a first post?

How's that for a first post?
Welcome rOB a.!!!

My picks:

"Though I can't say why / I know I've got to believe" (The Playboy Mansion)

^ I think it can be helpful in some hard times

And

"But a day will come in this dawning age / When an honest man sees an honest wage" (Van Diemen's Land)

^ I love the utopian place described in these lines

from Mercy

When I was ripping the stitches
Without two cents to rub
I'm diggin the ditches
Of someone else's luck

or from so cruel

Desparation is a tender trap
It gets you every time
You put your lips to her lips
To stop the lie

last but not least from Cedars

Choose your enemies carefully ‘cos they will define you
Make them interesting ‘cos in some ways they will mind you
They’re not there in the beginning but when your story ends
Gonna last with you longer than your friends

^spooky but true

In Bono's handwritten lyrics it says "without two cents", but as he sings it, the word cents is not clear. It sounds like it could be hands.

I never saw those written lyrics, are they in the HTDAAB book? :hmm:

Yes :)

There's one thing I can read.

What's the use of religion, if YOUR any good.
I know I'm weedkiller honey, and YOUR sugar(though that could be proper..
YOUR ice..

:madwife: Back to school for you Bono. Learn the difference between your/you're and lose/loose.
