So you never knew love
Until you crossed the line of grace
And you never felt wanted
Til you had someone slap your face
So you never felt alive
Until you almost wasted away

You had to win
You couldn't just pass
The smartest ass
At the top of the class
Your flying colours
Your family tree
And all your lessons in history

Please... please... please
Get up off your knees
Please... please... leave me out of this
Please

So you never knew
How low you'd stoop to make that call
And you never knew
What was on the ground til they made you crawl
So you never knew
That the heaven you keep, you stole

Your catholic blues
Your convent shoes
Your stick-on tattoos
Now they're making the news
Your holy war
Your northern star
Your sermon on the mount
From the boot of your car

Please...please... please
Get up off your knees
Please...please... leave me out of this
Please

So love is hard
And love is tough
But love is not what you're thinking of

September
Streets capsizing
Spilling over
Down the drain
Shards of glass
Splinters like rain
But you could only feel your own pain
October
Talk getting nowhere
November
December
Remember
Are we just starting again?

So love is big
It's bigger than us
But love is not what you're thinking of

It's what lovers deal
It's what lovers steal
You know I've found it hard to receive
Cause you my love
I could never believe

The greatest U2 lyric, and probably the best song ever to deal with the Troubles. Discuss.

amniar, I have to agree with you that "Please" is the best song ever to deal with the Troubles.

It is also one of the most biting commentaries that the B-man ever wrote.

Oh yea - didi I mention a rockin' guitar played by the Edge and an incessantly thumpin' bassline?

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT song - I rejoice and I cringe in anger every time I hear it.

LOVE IS BIGGER THAN US....:bono:

other than the lyrics, the part that stands out the most for me is Larry. It is almost a "Jazz" beat that he keeps there. One of his most unusual drumming patterns ever

I like BOTH beats he uses for this song... the original album version, and the slightly different single/live version. It's almost a march, almost a dance beat... yeah, not sure what it is, but it's my favorite piece of Larry's work.

the first time I heard it, there was a bit of cringing. but after I heard it a couple of times, it just BLEW ME AWAY!!! bono's lyrics are astounding! I think lyrically, it's one of the best. the music, as well, is so different and against the grain . . . .
it's awesome!!!
