In my interpretation, this song is a conversation Bono has with Jesus, but I've read on here as well that the song is directed at Ali.

The lyric "so I try to be like you, try to feel it like you do" - to me- referrs to the idea that one has to try to "be like Jesus" as much as he can, try as hard as he can.
