In a lot of live versions of New York I've heard, it sounds like Bono sings still I'm staying on to figure out my midwife crisis instead of "midlife" crisis. Am I just hearing things, or has anyone else noticed that? If he really is saying "midwife," then it's probably a reference to the fact that Ali was pregnant during most of the 1st leg. Any thoughts/comments?

I think he still meant to say "mid-life". I noticed he pronounces the letter L as W sometimes. Listen to "Elevation" and he says "Ewevation".

Okay, I'm just foolin' around there! In the line "...orbit of your hips, eclipse", he always says "EcWipse". LOL... It's so funny. You'll hear the same thing in the live versions as well.

LOL! I think Bono changes that line in a lot of live versions. Also in ISHFWILF, sometimes he'll sing "I was burning inside her" instead of "this burning desire."

And this is actually one of the things I LOVE about Bono. The improvisations, the adlibs, etc. that he makes in almost every song. There could be a thousand and one versions/ways he could sing and perform a single song.

And that's also one of the reasons why I'm a bootleg freak.

You get the chance to hear those improvs in the diff. shows.

Agree!

Sometimes he improvises more then he can remember himself. LOL I think the words just comes to him most of the time, without thinking. And as you said, that's the reason I love boots too. No concert sounds like the other.

Yay for Bono!

sometimes he sings it "midWIFE crisis" quite intentionally I think. It's Bono playing on words again. Remember "white dopes on punk staring into the flash" ?? A good example of how Bono will take a phrase or words that are SUPPOSED to go together and mix them up for effect. As far as why midwife? Well Ali WAS pregnant for a good deal of the tour...so perhaps that's why.

Yep, our man Bono definitely rocks at the improv. Other examples:

*During Popmart, WTSHNN's "I want to reach out and touch the flame" became "I want to break through into a new frame."

*For years now, One's "to the lepers in your head" has been "to the lepers in your bed."

*In "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" in a recording I have from just before the Elevation tour started, Bono sings "and the boys and girls collide, to the noise in my ear" rather than "music."

Talk about the power of a subliminal message...Ive watched the DVD every week since it came out and hadnt noticed that, BUT, last weekend we were rehearsing Desire and I mistakenly sang 'when Im inside her' and my bandmates looked over at me and laughed...guess I wasnt so off track after all...it does have a good ring to it...

Hmmm, I remember reading somewhere that Bono had a midlife crisis in the TJ days. Did anyone know that??!

UH OH..........:mac:
It's ok.....my lips are sealed.

But anyway to add to the conversation,
I own more bootlegs than other cd's.
I love Bono's improv!!!!
You never know what the B-man will say,
My favorite improv is on the PopMart Mexico cd,
at the beginning of HMTMKMKM when out of nowhere he yells "F@@@ this!!!"
He says some naughty stuff sometimes........
It's amazing how no matter what he says, it still sounds good.
