'what's the use of religion if you're any good?"
what do you think this means since u2 seems to be somewhat into religion? I have an idea, but would like to hear your viewpoints before i put my foot in mouth.

Well, I always interpreted as religion being something that you need to fall back on when times get rough. Becuase with firm believers, they could have their home burned and family killed, and still be satisfied becuase they feel safe with their faith. And what I think Bono (U2) is saying that he wont have to worry anymore, because of this person, this love he has for them will save him from all his troubles. Why fall back on religion when you have your security angel right next to you?



Then again, I'm probably way off.... Just my interpretation

He's saying I am bad/low and you are good/high
weedkiller/sugar

at least that is my take

as for the religion comment. Religion is the artifice around God.
it's the organization that isn't needed for faith. It's the business. And I think he is saying you can be good and not need it and not be any less of a good person. or Christian, if you read it that way.

and I completely love the song and the lyric as a person with faith who detests most organized religion.

In my opinion in this song Bono speaks directly to Jesus, and i interpret the sentence as "if you, Jesus, are the Supreme Good, religion is useless, we don't need it". I think U2 are not a religious band, but a spiritual band.
I don't know if this is the right interpretation, maybe it is entirely wrong... What do you think??

now that i'm completely confused i'll throw one more out there. Maybe his ego is always telling him how great and good he is, but since religion is usually for sinners and he is drawn to it he wonders how good he really is.

i agree with most of this, bono has a relationship with Jesus Christ, but he doesnt feel the spiritual need to be tied down by what religion has become...which is pretty awesome, now if he could only help bring religion back to what it should be about...then that would rock
