"but I've seen love conquer the great divide..."

What is the great divide? Between the living and the dead?

Well, judging by the context of the rest of the lyrics in that verse, I believe you're right...

I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide

Just my thoughts...

I think it's to do with the divide between Christ and the people who crucified him. They were so far away from God at that moment, but there was always hope for them to return. So, the singer is saying that although he plummeted to the lowest of the low depths, love above all could bring him back.

I think "divide" is referred to every kind of obstacle you can find -- I mean: pain, despair, lack of hope -- If you have love on your side, then you may be able to face all the mess and troubles that come your way!

just an example of how U2's lyrics can be interpreted in so many diffent ways... I love this!
