This may not be a lyrical masterpiece, nor dark but to me it's poignant as it relates to quite a few situations in my life:

Love is blindness
I don't want to see Won't you wrap the night Around me Oh my heart Love is blindness In a parked car In a crowded street You see your love Made complete Thread is ripping The knot is slipping Love is blindness Love is clockworks And cold steel Fingers too numb to feel Squeeze the handle Blow out the candle Love is blindness Love is blindness I don't want to see Won't you wrap the night Around me Oh my love Blindness A little death Without mourning No call And no warning Baby...a dangerous idea That almost makes sense Love is drowning In a deep well All the secrets And no one to tell Take the money Honey Blindness Love is blindness I don't want to see Won't you wrap the night Around me Oh my love Blindness |

My nomination would be Gone. That is as scathing as they come in U2's catalogue.

All the lyrics that have been mentioned here have a deep emotional impact, because Bono always writes from the heart.
But I don't know if Bono would have been capable of writing one of the cruelest lines I've ever heard. This is from an R.E.M. song: "This one goes out to the one I love/This one goes out to the one I've left behind/A simple prop to occupy my time." That line is chilling because it has NO emotion. It's cold and calculating. I can't think of anything that's quite equivalent to that in Bono's catalog. |

Outside
Somebody's outside Somebody's knocking at the door There's a black car parked At the side of the road Don't go to the door Don't go to the door Won't you come back tomorrow? Won't you be back tomorrow? Will you be back tomorrow? Can I sleep tonight? |

one's he's lifted are often very good, 'the silence creeps under the door'
'send a stretcher or you make me crawl' and in context 'suffer the needle chill' 'high, higher than the sun' it's a matter of context, when i saw them live, 'i got a feeling called vertigo' made total sense x ![]() |

So Cruel, Acrobat? So Cruel is obviously the perfect example of "biting" lyrics, I think.

I thought of this thread when listening to Acrobat..
"What do we do when it's all been said, when there's no laughter in the house and all the books have been read" |

I honestly thought it was "No new ideas in the house and every book has been read". Or am I wrong?

See the stone set in your eyes
__________________That one always gets me, and right from the start of the song setting the mood perfectly. Just brings it straight to the point, something that was once hot and "alive", turning cold and hardened. I'm sure there are other ways to interpret the line as well, but it's what I always feel when I hear it. |
