Of science and the human HEART
There is no limit
There is no failure here sweetHEART

Can you hear me when I SING
you’re the reason I SING

Can you see the BEAUTY inside of me?
What happened to the BEAUTY I had inside of me?

You can run from LOVE
And if it’s really LOVE it will find you

The SOUL needs beauty for a SOUL mate
When the SOUL wants… the SOUL waits …

And you broke every HEART thinking every HEART mends

Well the HEART that hurts
Is a HEART that beats

I’ll give you everything you WANT
Except the thing that you WANT

Take this CITY
A CITY should be shining on a hill

------------------------------------------

Instead of finding rhyming words, it seems like Bono is using the exact same words. Bono uses the same key words in consecutive lines, sometimes up to four times. Has anyone seemed to notice this? This is a songwriting style that I haven't seen as much in previous albums. There also seems to be an utter refusal by Bono to use pronouns. Does anyone have any plausible explanation other than Bono losing his vocabulary?

Cheers,

J

I doubt - while I'm not always a fan of the plain unadorned lyric that he trades in now - that Bono is losing his vocabulary. He's young enough that his choices are voluntary, I suspect.

I think bcrt2000 has proved a point there Jick!

Along the same lines tho, I dont think Iv ever seen the word KNEEL used so often in a U2 album up to this point?

All because of you and Yahweh are about God, Vertigo is about Jesus, Original of the Species is about religious zealots, love and peace or else is about the mid east crisis, one step closer is about bono's father losing faith before his death, city of blinding lights is about big cities & 9/11, sometimes you can't make it on your own is about bono's father

all of these songs have heavy religious themes, so its not suprising kneel is used a couple of times in this album, its not like we haven't heard that word before (mysterious ways comes to mind right away with any mention of the word kneel) :)

Quite right...."On your knees boy"!

the only one the actually sucks for its loopiness because it just doesn't make sense is:

I’ll give you everything you WANT
Except the thing that you WANT

what the hell man?

First -- I love the title of this thread!

Second -- reading them, the lyrics noted (both by jick and by bcrt2000) are annoying to me. But, I haven't actually heard many of the songs though, so I'll have to reserve judgement.

That lyric in original of the species describes the U2 fanbase to a tee perfect description of them.

The bit of lyric that kinda distracts me at the moment is "take these shoes" from Yahweh. Don't really know why, maybe because Bono already used it in Do You Feel Loved.

At least he doesn't rhyme "fire" and "desire"... I think.

Haha...this is great.

I have climbed the highest mountain
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you

Desert sky
Dream beneath a desert sky

Oh, oh on borderland we run
And still we run, we run and don't look back
I'll be there, I'll be there
Tonight, tonight

I'll be there tonight, I believe
I'll be there so high
I'll be there tonight, tonight.

Don't believe what you hear
don't believe what you see

You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want your story to remain untold.

To let it go
And so to fade away

To let it go
And so fade away

Like a desert needs rain
Like a town needs a name
etc.

Jick, you've proven nothing
You've proven nothing
Nothing is all you've proven

How about the "I'm ready..." or "some days..." repetitions he has on Zoo station and Some days are better than others?
Dream out loud phrase first appeared on Acrobat, then on Zooropa and even later on Always.

He uses the verb "see" many times on JT. He has the word "child" 3 times on AB.

Not like it all started with HTDAAB, jick. It helps with the cohesiveness of the theme of the album.

Jick are you really a U2 fan? You never have anything positive to say about the band. You post such garbage.

Yea, and this lyric is too similar to "So CrueL" except not near as good "gave you everything you ever wanted....wasn't what you wanted.."

Some tough to swallow lyrics on this album - that is for sure.

I believe you posted in the wrong forum Jick my good friend, yes you talk about the album, but your issue put forth for discussion focuses more on Bono and his songwriting in general. Therefore, knowing how important being correct is to you, I think this should have been posted in PLEBA, because it it moreso about a band member than the album.

Moderator, please move it.

This is one of Bono's favorite thoughts. As someone pointed out, he used it in So Cruel as well: "I gave you everything you ever wanted; it wasn't what you wanted." I think it's brilliant. Even the same word can have a different meaning within the same sentence.

"Everything you ever wanted" idiomatically implies a material want. Simply put, it's not too hard to understand giving someone "everything" before realizing all they really wanted was attention, or love, or committment, or whatever.

And remember, "so cruel" is supposedly about Edge's first marriage breakup and OOTS is supposedly about Edge's daughter. So we might have a dichotomy of "wants" recurrent in Edge's personal life. Also, it might be a thought that is important for Edge, regardless of how unpoetic we might find it.

What's more, remember that Bono went to the Bob Dylan school of songwriting, where he was told to just say what's on his mind and not sweat the poetic quality of his word choice. Remember, Bono would say that the song write themselves. Why would he correct the muse?
