I was in B&N the other day and saw the new print of the book had an extra chapter in the back.. anyone have it and can scan it?

What's the new chapter? I think I bought mine when it came out so I probably don't have the added chapter. Can someone tell us what it is? Thanks

Oh yes, I have that. I ordered my copy in fall 2006, it didn't have the pictures, but it had the new additional chapter.

...or at least tell us what it's about.

i have a first edition, too, so no pics & no extra chapter.

I have it. They added the extra chapter when the book came out in soft cover.
It consists of a phone call that Bono made to Assayas on the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death, December 8, 2005. He was calling from his New York apartment. He talks about many things, including the following:
Live 8 - what it was like performing with McCartney (who made Bono wear a denim jacket instead of Dior because McCartney was wearing Dior, LOL); how he thought it was a bad idea that there were so few African performers.
That segued into a discussion of his work in Africa (what a surprise!) and his arguments with Shrub on the issues. They've had a few heated conversations. He describes how the issues relating to trade will be the most difficult to solve. It "will be a long-haul fight, an epic long-term battle".
He talks about what a difficult year it's been physically, and how he deals with the frequent exhaustion. (Lots of sea diving in Mexico: "I have had great and wonderful moments underwater with my kids and my mates.")
He also talks about losing himself in song during performance and how difficult it is to watch videos of that afterwards. ("I find it hard to watch myself." It's "emotional pornography".)
Finally, he addresses the issue that many of us discussed when the book first came out, that he often seemed to be holding back and being cagey. He says: "There is stuff, of course, I've kept back...but mystery is something, as you know, I value, and I don't think sometimes it is a proper portrait to rob the subject of all mystery. All portraits, if they're any good, have one or two or three aspects. They cannot be of all aspects."

That's about it.

Thanks so much for that Biff, are there many pictures? I'll have to check this out next time I'm in a book store.

thanks for typing that up, Biff. I wonder what he means by "emotional pornography"? :hmm:

And Macca dictating what Bono wore to Live 8, that's weirdly McCartney-ish, lol!

You're welcome. Re: the "emotional pornography" quote, he says it's like "doing it with the lights on". By that I think he means he sees something of himself there that's very personal/vulnerable and exposed for everyone to see.

And yes, McCartney is someone who's used to getting his way. No surprises there.

It does sound like an interesting little addition to the book. I wish I had it. Thanks again for filling us in.

thanks biff i think i'll go to the store and read the last chapter sometime this week.. too bad i dont have the money or id buy it and scan it ..

I'm late to the party, but thank you biff

The story of the denim jacket is also in U2 by U2, but I still wonder if McCartney ever wore the Dior jacket.
He sure didn't while performing with U2, and I dont' have any footage of his own gig to check it out.

I just got this book today, complete with pics and extra chapter.

It's very exciting, but I'm making myself wait until tonight to read it. (ok so I read the forward and intro)

There is a new edition because in France the book was print in "pocket edition"...
In this way, Assayas made a new chapter... Commercial strategy but great moment!
