per·spec·tive (pər-spěk'tĭv)

e. The ability to perceive things in their actual interrelations or comparative importance: tried to keep my perspective throughout the crisis.

Back away, you're too close.

self-im·por·tance (sělf'ĭm-pôr'tns)
n. Excessively high regard for one's own importance or station; conceit

This wasn't meant to be a personal attack, I'm just a bit tired of this "I have listened to more music, therefore my opinion on NLOTH is better than yours"-thing.

I don't think my opinion is better, just more considered. What I'm seeing is total overreaction. I don't think you can give something such weight when you've only had it for a few weeks. You know, except for a baby.

All I know is that the first time I heard In Rainbows, I said to myself:

This is the best Radiohead album ever.
And I'm still right.

Sorry for "overreacting" but saying "If you're already putting No Line in your all-time Top 20, you probably need to listen to more music, or have a little perspective and patience" is bordering arrogant.

I can live with being called arrogant, and I think my argument is completely valid. Whether you like it or not, "All-time" is a term with weight, and as I said before, you cheapen the inclusion of everything else by including something so new.

There Will Be Blood is in top 20 of all-time favourite films.

Why do I have to wait 5 years to put it there when I know that I'm right?

I have to agree with Laz here. Give albums some time to see how they age. We are all guilty of getting too much in the moment with new albums. You need to step back and wait a while.

If I don't like NLOTH as much in 5 years it will be because I have changed as a person and therefore my taste has changed. I used to hate Bob Dylan, now I love him. When I was 12, Britney Spears was the best thing ever - I mean, my list as well as everyone elses is going to change anyway, not just NLOTH because it's new. I don't get your argument

The top 20?????!! That's is tough:

Let's see:

1 - The Joshua Tree
2 - Achtung Baby
3 - Automatic for the people
4 - Apetite for destruction
5 - No line On the Horizon
6 - The Queen is dead
7 - What's the story moring glory
8 - Mettalica
9 - War
10 - Ok computer
11 - 2 by Legiao Urbana (brazillian rock band)
12 - IV
13 - Ten
14 - The real Thing
15 - Sams Town
16 - The invisible Band
17 - A rush of blood to the head
18 - Blood sugar sex magic
19 - As quatro estações by Legião Urbana
20 - Exile on main street

WOW... that some pretty good music!!!! And i'm sure i have missed some.

That's why it's called an ALL-TIME list! Not "current favorites". Because it's stuff that's weathered the test of your changing tastes. Are there things I would have put on my theoretical list ten years ago that wouldn't make it now? Maybe one or two. But I also wasn't making those kinds of lists when I was 20 because I didn't know jack shit about music and was going through a lot of changes with what I was listening to.

These are personal favorite lists. I'm not sure what GPIII's reasons for putting NLOTH into his top twenty are, but I'm sure he has them - that might change, it might not. In terms of being one of the "best" albums of all times, as determined by collective taste or whatever, sure... NLOTH probably wouldn't make it. But these are personal lists.

Personally, I intentionally waited until NLOTH moved into my "standard" U2 rotation, out of the "special" spot that it occupied from when it came about to about when it was released in the US, to even try to rank it, even amongst just U2 albums. With some recent released that I had been really excited about (say... Viva La Vida and In Rainbows), it took about that amount of time for me to stop gushing over the albums just out of pure excitement and actually realize how I liked them... in both of those cases, the albums moved down significantly from where I placed them in my euphoria. The same thing happened to a lot of U2 albums I heard for the first time and initially loved, before Interference began to influence me (for example: War, Bomb, ATYCLB, and, yes... The Joshua Tree)... I loved them at first, but they fell in my rankings either significantly or by a small amount shortly thereafter. NLOTH, on the other hand, has gone the same was as the three 90s albums and TUF... straight up, from the moment I first heard it.

Call me musically illiterate. Guess what? By most peoples' definitions... I am. But I don't like probably 98% of music that's ever been made... hell, I don't like The Beatles at all. Don't ask me to explain... I can't. Just call me tasteless, call me musically illiterate, call me stupid, call me arrogant, call me whatever the hell you want to call me. I would take, in a heartbeat, Acadie by Danny Lanois or AFTP by R.E.M. or Everything That Happens Will Happen Today by Byrne and Eno (for a few examples I came up with off the top of my head) over Sgt. Pepper's or Dark Side of the Moon or Born to Run (although I do have a soft spot for OK Computer). U2 are by far my favorite group, though, and probably the only group I've ever heard that actually gives me one-hundred-percent of what I truly like in music. What I'm looking for in music is extremely weird, but NLOTH appeases it better than... almost everything.

Deal with it.

OH SRY, I'm quite bad at them as well

TMI: To much information

I'm going to bed too, good night:hug:

Thanks! :D

Post your top 20 please, it doesn't need to be in order anyway. If we have such similar tastes there might be something in there that I don't know yet and that I'll end up liking. :applaud:

20. Bringing It All Back Home- Bob Dylan

I did this kind of quick but this would probably be it or at least these 20 albums would be in my top 30 but this is as accurate as could be. I am surprised to see No Line On The Horizon there but I really have thoroughly enjoyed it thus far. Magnificent, MOS and Breathe are all REALLY REALLY phenomenal songs imo and there are no subpar songs at all. I think i enjoy U2 as much, if not more so, than any other band.

But I also wasn't making those kinds of lists when I was 20 because I didn't know jack shit about music and was going through a lot of changes with what I was listening to.

So I can't make an all-time list before I'm 30?
I've always thought of these things as "name 20 albums that mean the most to you, or that you would bring on a desert island, or that you think will mean something as much in 10 years."
I don't see why I should stay out of the discussion just because I'm 20. But I see your point a little bit more now, maybe.

4. Dark Side Of The Moon- U2
Also.

Alright, this looks like (completely subjective, so who can argue?) fun, so I'll bite:

Achtung Baby( I mean, really )...U2
The Joshua Tree...U2
Rubber Soul...The Beatles
Out of Time...REM
In Rainbows...Radiohead
Ten...Pearl Jam
Synchronicity...The Police
The Unforgettable Fire...U2
Definitely, Maybe...Oasis
Stone Roses (first Album)
The Queen is Dead...The Smiths
Wrecking Ball...Emmylou Harris
Revolver....The Beatles
Zooropa...U2
Millionaires...James
Time Out of Mind...Bob Dylan
War...U2
Boy...U2
Who's Next...The Who
Let It Be...The Beatles.
Yield...Pearl Jam
Kid A...Radiohead

So that's like 22 and I tried to avoid anything less than three years old, so no NLOTH

Tasteful as always:up:

Got to give you credit for putting Julee Cruise in there, great great album. Two of the songs were in the greatest episode of Twin Peaks.

4. Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy
5. Steely Dan - Aja

16. Oasis - Definitely Maybe
17. Aerosmith - Pump
18. Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas
19. Weezer - Blue Album
20. Randy Newman - Sail Away

I don't want to write it out, or paste it from that B&C top 50 thing a while back (as I already disagree with it), but I have TUF and maybe War in my top twenty.

1) U2 "The Joshua Tree"
2) Depeche Mode "Violator"

19) Frank Zappa & Mothers of Invention "We're only in it for the Money"
20) U2 "Zooropa"

I don't think I can give you a top 20 of my favourite albums but I can give you a top 10. With songs you're just looking at what tune you like whilst albums offer more. My favourite album as far as every song that's on it I like would be Automatic For The People and that's the only album I've ever heard that I can make that claim for. However, there are other albums which I think offer more in other ways. I do like World Coming Down by prog/gloom metal act Type O Negative but the production is quite shoddy. Anyway here's my top 10:

1/The Wall (Pink Floyd)
2/Sgnt Pepper (The Beatles)
3/White Album (The Beatles)
4/Achtung Baby (U2)
5/ Abbey Road (The Beatles)
6/Automatic For The People (REM)
7/What's The Story Morning Glory (Oasis)
8/OK Computer (Radiohead)
9/ Nevermind (Nirvana)
10/ Thriller (Michael Jackson)

As anti-Intedomine as Lazarus might be and as anti-Lazarus I might be, I agree wholeheartedly with the Laz on this. It's impossible to rank an album after just 2 or 3 weeks.

Put it in one's list if one must, but you're fooling yourself if you can swear 100% that you will think the same of the album in 6 months time. Albums age, for better or worse.

I'm still struggling to rank Viva La Vida in my top 50. It's in there for sure, but whether it's top twenty or between 40-50 I still don't know....

1. Achtung Baby - U2
2. Desintegration - The Cure
3. The Joshua Tree - U2
4. Bloodflowers - The Cure
5. Boy - U2
6. Morning Euphoria - Chris Cornell
7. Superunknown - Soundgarden
8. Never Mind - Nirvana
9. Origin of Symetry - Muse
10. New adventures... - REM
11. Toxicity - System of a down
11. Black holes and revelation - Muse
12. The unforgettable fire - U2
13. POP - U2
14. Absolution - Muse
15. Pornography - The Cure
16. Down on the Upside - Soundgarden
17. Wish - The Cure
18. Head on the door - The Cure
19. War - U2
20. Californiacation - Red Hot Chilli Peppers

yeah I know, not so many artists.... I'm kind of stuck with 80's and 90's rock/grunge.
I love Depeche mode as well, but I love the others too much!

6 x U2
5 x The Cure
3 x Soundgarden/Cornell
3 x Muse
