This thread was inspired by a thread I saw about Glasvegas covering an AB song. Several people posted the AB track listing and then said who they would like to have cover each song. I thought it would be an interesting idea, so I came up with this thread!

Which artists (current or past) would you like to hear cover songs off the Joshua Tree?

Mine:

1 - Where The Streets Have No Name*
2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For*
3 - With or Without You - Arcade Fire
4 - Bullet The Blue Sky - Led Zeppelin
5 - Running To Stand Still - Tom Petty
6 - Red Hill Mining Town - R.E.M.
7 - In God's Country - The Black Keys
8 - Trip Through Your Wires - The Decemberists
9 - One Tree Hill* -
10 - Exit - Pearl Jam
11 - Mothers of The Disappeared - Bob Dylan

*I just love those songs so much as is, and I could not honestly think of any other band I'd like to hear cover them*

Not sure if I could come up with one for every song, I'll come back if I put a bit more thought into it, but I would definitely say if Arcade Fire was going to cover something, I'd rather it be Streets or maybe In God's Country.

But really what I came to say was, a million times over, Peter Gabriel needs to cover "Mothers of the Disappeared".

No. The bassline of MOD deserves to be covered by The XX!

And keep Elbow for Running To Stand Still. They covered it brilliantly.

Someone likes the 90s!

;)

This list assumes they're all at the peak of their powers for the performance:

Where The Streets Have No Name - M83
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Rod Stewart
With Or Without You - The National
Bullet The Blue Sky - Rage Against The Machine

Red Hill Mining Town - Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
In God's Country - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Trip Through Your Wires - Neil Young & Crazy Horse
One Tree Hill - Arcade Fire
Exit - Pearl Jam
Mothers of the Disappeared - Low

Where the Streets Have No Name - Jedward

Bullet the Blue Sky - Terrance Trent D'Arby
Running to Stand Still - George Formby
Red Hill Mining Town - Duet between whoever sang Time Of My Life on Dirty Dancing
In God's Country - Coldplay*
Trip Through Your Wires - Dizzee Rascal raps over the Cast Of Glee
One Tree Hill - Reel Big Fish
Exit - Devo*
Mothers of the Disappeared - Tiny Tim

*would genuinely like to hear these two.

haha I picked your choices for Bullet+Red Hill Mining Town too, lemonmelon before I gave up trying to write a serious full list! had Arcade Fire down for Mothers Of The Disappeared though, that'd be a very interesting close. would definitely need Springsteen at his peak for Red Hill Mining Town, but its the only guy I could think of who'd give as passionate a performance.

Why not have the cast of Glee do all of it? Is there any one track on Joshua Tree that would be more acceptable for them to cover, that wouldn't be the nadir of mankind?

I've got to think that Rage doing Bullet is a no-brainer. Half their songs sound like Bullet anyway.

yeah definitely a no-brainer. can just hear them playing that song in my head, it would be amazing.

This would be my ideal TJT Tribute album, with (IMHO) relevant contemporary artists.

1 - Where The Streets Have No Name - Arcade Fire (No brainer)
2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Belle & Sebastian
3 - With or Without You - Broken Social Scene (Kevin Drew sometimes snippets it)
4 - Bullet The Blue Sky - Editors
5 - Running To Stand Still - James Murphy
6 - Red Hill Mining Town - Mumford and Sons (Again, no brainer here)
7 - In God's Country - Kings of Leon
8 - Trip Through Your Wires - Wilco
9 - One Tree Hill - The National (OMG!)
10 - Exit - Interpol
11 - Mothers of The Disappeared - Sufjan Stevens

Having Arcade Fire cover Streets would make me happy. Having The National cover OTH would also make me happy. Having The Kings of Leon cover IGC and Mumford and Sons covering RHMT would make me want to kill someone.

James Murphy doing Running to Stand Still... hmm. I love the guy to death but I'm not sure how cowbell would benefit RTSS.

I'd love to hear Broken Social Scene any of U2's more epic tunes.

1 - Where The Streets Have No Name – Coldplay
2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Mumford and Sons
3 - With or Without You - Travis
4 - Bullet The Blue Sky – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
5 - Running To Stand Still – Arctic Monkeys
6 - Red Hill Mining Town – Noel Gallagher
7 - In God's Country - Weezer
8 - Trip Through Your Wires - Kings of Leon
9 - One Tree Hill – Florence And The Machine
10 - Exit - Muse
11 - Mothers of The Disappeared – Bruce Springsteen

Where the Streets Have No Name - I can't think of anyone
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Crosby, Stills, and Nash
With or Without You - no one. it's my favourite... (although the string quartet version is quite good)
Bullet the Blue Sky - I have no idea...
Running to Stand Still - Ewan McGregor (already partially done but really good)
Red Hill Mining Town - Bruce Springsteen
In God's Country - Fleetwood Mac
Trip Through Your Wires - Snow Patrol
One Tree Hill - Elton John
Exit - Florence and the Machine
Mothers of the Disappeared - Neil Young

10 - Exit - Pearl Jam

:up::up:

I've thought the very same MANY times. PJ would do an amazing job with Exit. It's funny, because the grunge-like aggression in that song is actually more in line with something from Vitalogy or VS than it is with U2's own material.

Wish the audio was cleaner, but still, I love this: U2's A Sort Of Homecoming performed by Pearl Jam - YouTube

Also love when the guy says "Woohooo....U2!!" at the top...

Streets - Arcade Fire
ISHFWILF - David Bowie
WoWY - The Antlers
Bullet The Blue Sky - Rage Against the Machine
Running to Stand Still - The National
Red Hill Mining Town - The Killers
In God's Country - Coldplay
Trip Through Your Wires - I don't know...
One Tree Hill - The Strokes
Exit - Jeff Buckley
Mothers of The Disappeared - Bon Iver

Odd choices, I know.

I'm actually surprised that Glee hasn't done ISHFWILF considering that they usually seem to use an artist/band's most overplayed songs.

-Where The Streets Have No Name - Arcade Fire
-I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Adele
-With or Without You - Regina Spektor
-Running To Stand Still - Coldplay (This is one of my favorites by U2, but I usually like Coldplay's piano-driven songs)
-Exit - Muse
-Mothers of the Disappeared - Radiohead

Dunno about the others

All of them - Coldplay
They've already done that.

I'm generally not a big fan of bands doing U2 covers, I don't think there's been one I heard I'd consider indispensable or that I really love (some are just less objectionable than others). The absolute worsts are the "classical" renditions of U2 songs (or classical renditions of any rock/pop artists songs...and this has become a rather unfortunate trend that Sting legitimized by doing an official version of such). Having said that, I think some of the African U2 covers from that album are sort of interesting.

What I'd really like to hear is a U2 cover of "Yellow", based on the snippets Bono sang at Glastonbury...I thought it sounded more beautiful and ethereal than the original. I think Bono actually had a good instinct on the "way" that song should be sung live.

And I think the best (studio) cover that U2 has done that I've heard is Dancing Barefoot, which remains one of my favorite songs of theirs.

I think the worst covers of a U2 song I've heard is Streets during the Popmart tour.

Oh wait, that was U2.

I don't think I've ever heard a U2 cover that I like. With the absolute low point being MJB. :yuck: *shudders* Blegh.

Just don't cover U2. Don't bother. Go make original music or something and try to make it.
