Their best work

JT (sorry fans of the other one - it is the ultimate U2 album)
AB (great reinvention)
UF (Eno brings the fourth dimension with his synth

Very good
War (second half brings it down)
NLOTH/Zooropa - a tie (a better song selection for the latter and a tighter theme/sound for the former would do the trick)

Solid/average
ATYCLB/Pop/HTDAAB (midlife crisis albums)

Not bad per se but they were still yearning and it's only here because the later stuff is better
Boy (the debut charm still works after all these years)

Weakest links
October (not as charming as Boy, not as good as War)
Rattle and Hum (overdoing the American sound)

Looks like Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby (of course) are consistently in the top 3 of people's lists.

Bono and the Edge are probably reading this thread and going, "Man, by the amount of requests for POP songs live we get from these people, you'd think Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby would be at the bottom of their lists!"

Your "mono-lexicism" against the single-word albums is very unfortunate and will not be permitted in this lexically-free forum.

 care to elaborate?

in terms of following Boy-October-War it's definitely not a step back.

Read that as "good, but a clear step back...from the others."

However, even taking this change of phrasing into account, I believe TUF only surpasses Boy in ambition. It aims higher, and for that reason placed U2 on a track to even greater works. However, as it stands today, only 6 of the tracks (ASOH-Promenade, Bad) stand up to scrutiny, and the b-sides reveal how incomplete TUF truly is. The peaks are among the highest of any U2 album, and the production is fascinating, but as a 45 minute piece, it falls short of a good chunk of their other work.

That said, I liked it a lot less a few years ago, and I may grow to disagree with this opinion over time. It's entirely possible.

LOL, really, no kidding! Ah, U2 fans, confusing the hell out of U2 for 30 plus years :D.

Um, yeah, so let's see here...hopefully the band wouldn't be too confused by my list :p. Or maybe they would, who knows:

If I Were Stranded On A Deserted Island...

1. Pop
2. The Joshua Tree
3. Achtung Baby

And the rest...

4. The Unforgettable Fire
5. War*
6. No Line On The Horizon
7. Rattle & Hum
8. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
9. All That You Can't Leave Behind
10. Boy
11. Zooropa
12. October

*=I think I said in one thread that War was in the top 3, but I totally forgot about Achtung Baby when I said that, and then there's The Unforgettable Fire, so...um, yeah. I do love War immensely, though.

8 and 9 can switch back and forth depending on my mood, they're sort of tied in number of songs I love vs. number of songs that I'm not quite as big on. Zooropa has some classics on it, but again, also has some songs that aren't my top picks, as does October. All that being said, however, I'll ditto LemonMelon's sentiment. Even the lowest ranking U2 album is still definitely worthwhile listening. There's always something good you can pull out from any one of their albums :).

ATYCLB has sentimental value to me because I drifted away from U2 during Zooropa and POP and Beautiful Day is what got me back into them again.

/sap

  You are not the the only one Sicy!

Anyway here are my picks. Had to think about this for a while!

1. The Joshua Tree :heart::heart::heart::heart::heart::heart::heart: (this would be the album I would take on a deserted island!!!)
2. The Unforgettable Fire
3. Achtung Baby

And the rest... (I can't number them. They all have sentimental value for me!!!)
War
All That You Can Leave Behind
Rattle and Hum
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
Zooropa
Pop
No Line on the Horizon
October
Boy

I find it really hard to rank U2 albums as I'm never sure whether to rank them based on how I feel about the album in general, or on the strength of its individual songs. This list mostly tends towards the former.

1. All That You Can't Leave Behind
2. The Unforgettable Fire
3. Boy
4. Pop
5. Achtung Baby
6. No Line On The Horizon
7. The Joshua Tree
8. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
9. Rattle and Hum
10. Zooropa
11. War
12. October

I consider [Passengers] as much a U2 album as any of the others (in fact, more of an album than RAH)

I may be biting off more than I want to chew on here, but are you saying that 'Passengers', the name/project, is somehow more "U2" than the Rattle & Hum project?

Explanation...?
