Killers are the NEXT U2???

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
The Killers blow goats. All style, no substance. Crap, generic "alternative" rock band led by a dork who's mind is stuck in the 80's. Guys, you will never even be as good as the Flock of Seagulls. And your Joy Division cover was shameful. Just go away. Please.

Great interview. "there's a reason the music business is in a slump. The records are boring."

There was another Canadian interview that used to have on VHS where Edge makes fun of the Rolling Stones and mentions that he saw a show and "wasn't impressed".

All these bands are competiting like Coke vs. Pepsi. The difference with U2 is that they put their money where there mouth is and actually worked harder than anyone else.

Sometimes I feel people think U2 makes these records with no effort. It's hard work. If the Killers want to work that hard, then GO FOR IT or shut up. I just think it's just a way to sell records and fight for that 15-25 age group while U2 is delaying their album. Those little bands are hungry and are trying to compete with marketing.

Please U2 don't rush anything just to out market bands in advertising. The music should be first as it always has been.

In the end the proof is in the pudding. What's on The Killers album and what's on the new U2 album. Eventually they will be right when U2 quit. There will be one hell of a black hole in the music industry when that happens. U2's music is still in demand no matter what they say. Bono seems aware that they have an opportunity to really make it good on this record and will have big sales along with critical support when it happens.

I think the bands are scared. Actions speak louder than words.

NOT EVEN CLOSE. Sorry, first of all these guys are a second rate band with some really catchy songs. They might be around in five years and in ten I guarantee they'll be doing state fairs or casino's at best. Not even close. It's actually quite laughable that anyone would even think this is close to reality.

Oh,I know he didn`t just say that.
I don`t care if they are 100,U2 will always be #1. If The Killers want to replace an old band,The Rolling Stones are there baby...:lmao:

How can someone be a new U2 anyway?

Ultimately, the only way a band can become the "next U2" is by taking the mantle as the greatest live band in the world. To be able to put on the best show. And that's something U2 have achieved with two immortal albums and about two dozen universally adored and enjoyed tunes behind them. It takes a while to build up that kind of band equity. It's not something you can just do after about 2 or 3 albums.

Good luck to the Killers, but they'll need some kind of Joshua Tree to even start thinking about becoming the next U2, and the only album that has come close to The Joshua Tree on a commercial and critical scale is Nevermind, and I somehow can't see Nirvana becoming the next U2.

Coldplay are the closest you're gonna get to a "next U2" if you need to attach this label to someone going around at the moment, and that's down to sheer size, the memorability of some of their songs, and their explosivity live. They still haven't won over the anti-mainstream critics who U2 shut down with the release of The Joshua Tree.

The biggest difference between U2 and The Killers is heart. U2's music comes directly from their souls, while The Killers just write songs with no depth. Maybe a catchy chorus here and there, but nothing that will stand the test of time.

Couple good new songs off their next album??? I think we'll have atleast 8-9 unbelievable songs that will blow the doors off anything the Killers have ever done + an album that could be U2's best ever based on the clips so far!!! Please, the Killers are decent, but I can't see another U2 based on the current state of the music industry!

Sorry but U2 isn't close to being the best live band in the world. Overall, yeah probably, but greatest live band? Not so much.

I like the Killers, but they will never become like U2.

In fact, I don't think anyone will, not Coldplay, not the Killers and not Radiohead. :reject:

No

Editors ARE the next U2 in terms of quality songs and content.

I'd be stoked if that were the case, but I can't see them getting proper astronomical commercial success.

An End Has A Start (song) should have been the biggest alternative hit of the decade.

I wonder if they said stupid shit like this in the 1700's like Beethoven was going to be the next Mozart :hmm:

BEETHOVEN: THE NEXT MOZART?
11 November 1788

Ludwig van Beethoven -- a promising pianist from Bonn, whose technical approach has often been compared to that of Mozart's -- dazzled Viennese patrons today with several original concertos. We at Vienna Media descended upon him like flies after his performance, eager to badger him about his next composition.

When asked if he thought he would be able to top Mozart's latest work, Symphony No. 41 in C major, the young German became visibly agitated. "Ja, of course I would," he replied. "That one was a bit disappointing, no? A few bright moments, but nothing like the Mozart I know and love. The piano concerto I am working on right now is quite brilliant, and I'm sure it will beat the Scheiße out of anything Mozart has written over the past few months, or anything he will write in the future. I will knock him off his pedestal. It feels like it's time."

After being told that we had a preliminary copy of Mozart's opera-in-progress [ed. note: tentatively titled 'Die Zauberflöte'] that was also quite brilliant, Beethoven dismissed us with a scoff. "Please. Anyone can compose a Singspiel. Mozart is getting older now, and his ideas aren't as fresh as they once were. Just you wait until I finish my first symphony - ten years from now, people will be saying Wolfgang Who?"

(I'm bored and need an outlet for my procrastination.)

The Killers are one of the few bands I like from my generation. But they've pretty much lost most of their fan base already

I don't think so. I'm a Killers fan and saw them live last month, and let me tell you, the fans were as enthusiastic as at any concert I've been to (at least in the front they were. I couldn't tell how it was behind me.)

Not only that, but they put on a spirited, energetic and entertaining show that had me dancing and singing for an hour and 15 minutes straight. A VERY good show.

And I agree with Martin. These quotes were probably taken way out of context.

:applaud: Nice work with all the german too! "beat the Scheiße out of Mozart"

The Killers are not and NEVER will be U2.

People need to realize and put in perspective exactly what being 'the next U2,' and knocking them from their pedestal would entail.

1.)The Next U2: The Killers would need to be around 32 years and make best selling albums for 28(both figures are running counts, btw). They would need to sell over 200 million of those albums, win over 22 grammys and various and assorted other awards. They would need to have their own unique sound(they dont) and be capable of innovating within that unique structure no less than 3 times. They would need songs as diverse as Yahweh and HMTMKMKM, October and The Fly, Vertigo and One, In God's Country and Mothers of the disappeared, Wire and A sort of homecoming, Streets and An cat dubh, you get the idea. The Killers would need to have 8 and counting major world tours and 3 more relatively extensive tours by the time they are done. All of these tours need to fill stadiums and arenas in big cities night after night, not minor league hockey arenas in satellite cities. Way too premature for them to be opening their mouths in this regard. When they have done all this, then we can have a conversation about the killers as the next U2.
2.) Knock U2 off their pedestal: This would require that their next album be #1 in dozens of countries immediately, beat the hell out of U2's next album in sales, and be followed by a world tour that makes U2's next tour look like a few nights at the local pub. Then maybe U2 will have been knocked off their pedestals.

No, Coldplay and the Killers are not bad bands with arrogant maniacs as lead singers, quite the opposite. But, however, none of these bands are even close to in the same league as U2. People forget, everyone knew U2 would be special right from 1980, there was never a doubt. All this current speculation is simply the music industry taking established artists(killers, coldplay) who have been kicking a few years and trying to gurantee themselves a future by promoting someone as the next big thing.

U2 started down the path of history that leads to the beatles, rolling stones, hendrix, et al right from BOY and never looked back.

Well let's do a comparison so far....

Boy
~3.8 million copies sold in 28 years
Peak chart position was 63 on Billboard 200
0 grammy nominations

Hot Fuss
~5 million copies sold in 3 years
Peak chart position was 7 on the Billboard 200
5 Grammy nominations

October
~3.7 million copies sold in 27 years
Peak chart position was 104 on Billboard 200

Sam's Town
~4 million copies sold in 2 years
Peak chart position was 2 on Billboard 200

The Killers have also been playing much bigger venues than U2 were playing during their Boy-October era.

So I'd say the Killers are on a better pace to start their career than U2, they just need to keep it up for another 30 years ;)

Indeed, but there's no way they'll ever make an album that sells 20 million copies. No one can anymore. The comparison doesn't work.

:sigh: Please...

It seems like every time another band is named in the same post as U2, lots of people come out of the woodwork just to thrash that other band and blindly idolize U2. Because you know, U2 is the only band that matters.
