Well just like the official best of 1980-1990 doesn't actually include anything from 1990, my best of doesn't include anything from 2000. Or 1999 or 1998 for that matter. The really good collections are an album in themselves, not just a mix of hits (hits are important though, but I'll give up some hits for real album defining songs or live staples).

My collection of the 90's is a travel guide of U2's Europe in the last decade of the 20th century.

1. The Fly - We start out with the sound of four men chopping down the Joshua tree. They've since fled the scene of the crime, re-emerging in the dark and seedy underbelly of a restless Berlin on the knife-edge of their Soviet occupation.

2. Until The End of The World - The band find themselves on a roof top party in the late evening where they converse with one of the city's more prominent residents.

3. One - On the brink of losing each other to the winds of change coursing through the city, the boys reforge themselves over a simple cord progression and universal melody.

4. Zooropa - Whisked away on title track bullet train, U2 accepts their position as the vanguard of the Western media blitzkrieg gathering at Central Europe's borders.

5. Numb - The onslaught begins. Electronic signals and hip-hop beats invade Vienna's clubs.

6. Lemon - Mixed in amongst the revelry and interference of those heady nights, an undercurrent of meloncholy and wistfulness prowles.

7. Miss Sarejvo - Out on the street for a late marches smoke, the muffled bass of the discotheque pumping behind them, U2 hear the faint sound of mortar shells bursting in far away air.

8. Stay - While walking along the Danube docks in the early morning, leaving the clubs and sounds of war behind, the wet Hapsburg city begs them not to leave.

9. Discotheque - Abandoning Central Europe to its own devices, the boys shed upheaval and change in the clubs of northern Italy.

10. Staring At The Sun - Or so they think. Not even the swirling lights and crammed dance floors of Milan can purge their souls of places that have come before.

11. Gone - The night deepens. Milan's clubs get darker, its dancers more desperate. The red, blue and green lights fractured by the mirrorball spread yearning and lonliness amongst the packed, sweating crowd. The boys need cleaner air. Dawn breaks. It's time to go home.

12. Mysterious Ways - Heading west, U2 moves down along the Iberian Peninsula, pulling its rhythms with them as they go.

13. Even Better Than The Real Thing - They arrive in London, greeted and assualted by paparazzi camera-flash over culture.

14. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me - They rail against and embrace their celebrity in the stadiums of the UK's Rock and Roll forum.

15. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (Temple Bar Mix) - But they retire from the public at last, finding refuge at home in the the rustic pubs of Dublin.

16. Please (Single Version) - Only to hear distant gunfire once again. Though the winds of change faintly blow...

We don't actually have a copy of the song or anything, but its lyrics were printed in U2 At The End Of The World. Bono considered using it live on ZooTV, reciting it in concert or something, but obviously that never happened either.

From a commercial perspective, looking to increase sales from Zooropa, OS1 and PoP, and to try and retain those willing to sample U2 with this compilation, and convert into proper fans, and to appear as truly representative of the period as possible...which the Real compilation failed in doing so miserably and inadequately...
