End of Chapter 10

“He would have loved you. Michael” She patted Michael’s shoulder. “Now where’s that daughter of mine?” She placed the photo back on the shelf not realizing a photo had fallen to the floor.

Michael picked the photo off the floor, it was an old black and white photo of a baby, on the back were the words “Conor Thomas Murray, 20 June 1963, RIP”. It was of Sadie’s brother, his birthday was the same as his brother Conor. How spooky was that?

The boys sat in the Ferry bar trying to pull together enough money for a round. Bono looked at the boys and felt guilty for disappointing them.

“Look this religious stuff is bollix” Adam couldn’t understand why Edge & Larry were being so harsh with Bono

“Here we go again, Adam we’ve discussed this before.” Edge stared at him

“Edge let me just make my point” Adam stared back “Please.”

“Alrite.” Edge was curious now

“Right, now I’m going on what I remember from school, but doesn’t it say in the bible somewhere “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone?” Adam questioned the others.

“Yes it does” Larry agreed

“And doesn’t it teach that as a response to God's forgiveness, the Christian believer is in turn expected to learn how to forgive others” Adam looked at Larry & Edge.

“That’s correct” Edge had to concur with Adam thoughts.

“So what has Bono done that is so wrong?” Adam’s questioned, “He hasn’t done anything wrong in my mind, and the only thing he’s guilty of is falling in love. Is that such a terrible crime? Is that worth all this tension?”

Bono looked up at his friends. He was truly touched with Adam interception on his behalf. He looked at Edge & Larry. He loved his band mates like brothers, they were his family.

“Actually Adam, fair play to you.” Edge smiled. “For a non believer you have opened my eyes.”

Edge leaned over the table, and shook Bono’s hand. Larry followed. The tension lifted and they all had a beer, best buddies once more.

Michael and Sadie were on their way home from Slane. As they approached the city Michael handed Sadie an eye mask

“Put that on” he commanded, throwing it onto her lap

“Why” she questioned

“Because I said so” his voice sternly ordered.” I have a surprise for you”

Sadie put the eye mask over her face. Initially she wondered what he meant by surprise. Then he placed his hand on her upper thigh, moving it slowly towards her tummy. Michael had one thing on his mind.

************************************************************

It had been a long time since they’d actually been alone. Michael had finally gotten around to booking a suite at The Shelbourne Hotel. He couldn’t care less where he shagged Sadie, the local B& B was good enough but he wanted to be seen, he wanted people to know Michael Murphy had high standards. He even booked The Princess Grace suite. He already called to explain that she’d be blindfolded to keep it a “surprise” until they reached the suite.

He led Sadie, still blindfolded to the lift.

“Michael, where are we? “Sadie pleaded.

“You’ll see soon enough” he smiled, winking at the Porter.

The porter remained silent. He’d seen Michael’s sort before. Business men on trips to the City; picking up hookers to be their “girlfriend” for their stay. Just because they paid a lot of money didn’t make them any different to a man down the local whore house in his eyes. They reached the suite and he opened the double doors for Michael who then handed him an awesome tip and he left the couple to their business

Michael flung Sadie up over his shoulder making her squeal with surprise as he strolled into the suite, kicking the doors closed behind him. He looked for a place to put Sadie and walked through the double doors to the bedroom where the king size bed looked extremely appetizing. He dropped her onto the bed; Sadie reached to remove the blindfold.

“No, not yet “, his voice was powerful and commanding.

She heard the pop of a champagne cork. She felt the bottle placed to her lips

“Drink”, Michael wasn’t taking no for an answer. She was powerless to resist, by the time she’d finished the bottle she was light headed and giggly from the champagne.

Slowly he undressed her, hardly touching her which only intensified her sexual yearning. Her heart was saying no but her lusting loins begged to be released from their sexual frustration as the chill of the night air hit her naked skin.

**************************************************************

Sadie crawled back into bed pulling the covers over her body. Michael’s arms wrapped around her and he pressed his lips to hers. They shared a long kiss that said more then words ever would. She laid her head on his arm which he'd curled around her body and listened to his intense heavy breathing.

She heard him mumble something. His words were barely audible and slurred in his sleepy state, ‘I love you' before he fell asleep. Michael had never said that to her, although it didn’t give her butterflies like she got when Bono proclaimed it.

Sadie couldn’t sleep; the pangs of guilt wouldn’t let her relax. How would he ever forgive her, had she cheated on him? He’d told her to stay safe and sometimes that meant doing what Michael wanted. Why couldn’t Bono just come and rescue her now. Tell her it was alright, that he loved her.

Carefully she inched away from Michael’s naked body, making sure her movements didn’t wake him. She retrieved the earlier discarded bathrobe and made her way to the lounge. Michael had been really indulgent, they were in the Princess Grace Suite, and it had two bedrooms, a separate dinning area and living area. She made her way to the windows and looked into the dark Dublin night. She saw lights on the opposite side of St. Stephen’s Green, but it was too dark to make out the green itself.

She walked over to the bar and removed all the miniature bottles of Whiskey. That would help her numb the pain for a while. Sleep would bring a release. She turned on the TV, and flicked through the channels. She stopped on RTE2 , The Late Late show was airing, she decided to watch the famous Gabbo and see what all the fuss was about.

“Can I ask you John to introduce U2 because you know more about them then I do”,

Sadie’s heart jumped at the mention of U2, her attention firmly on the TV

“Ladies and gentleman, what can I say about these august men; these titans among rock n’ rollers, Dave McCullough’s , Jude Carr’s , mine and yours, the band of the 80’s or 90’s who knows? – U2” , John smiled.

YouTube - U2 - Stories For Boys (The Late Late Show 1980) :sexywink:

The band started playing Stories for Boys, and then there he was, Bono. He looked slightly younger, his hair was shorter but he looked gorgeous in his black jeans, black polo neck top, and a tight black and red leather jacket.

She laughed at Adam’s baggy lime green jumper with a shirt underneath. What was it with Irishmen: most of them wore a shirt underneath a jumper? Edge was looking smart and his guitar playing was amazing. She couldn’t make out Larry; his drum kit seemed to hide most of him. She looked at her love, subdued by his normal standards; he kept ruffling his hair with his hand, the hands that had touched her body so delicately. Every time the camera man moved in for a close up of Bono, she felt those lips on hers.

The song finished and then he was gone.

Sadie felt the tears welling up, as she could no longer be strong. She was so confused. How could she love two men simultaneously? Michael; he was so tall, strong yet dominant. Bono he was so sexy, funny, passionate yet tender. Michael could give her everything. Bono had nothing but himself to give her. She finished the remains of the whiskey and staggered back to the bed. Better keep Michael happy until her KISA returned to rescue her.

Bono and Edge walked into the bar. Amsterdam stirred bitter sweet memories for Bono; he needed a beer to calm himself before tonight’s gig. Larry and Adam had gone off to do touristy stuff and for once it had been Edge who had suggested they go to a bar.

They sat at the bar and ordered a beer.

“So how are the lyrics going for the new album?” Edge queried.

“Oh you know me, they coming along just fine” Bono smirked back

That was the problem, the boys knew Bono too well. He was already notorious for ad-libbing at the mike, even on the day of recording.

“In fact I have a fully complete one already.” Bono stated fetching a piece of folder paper from his jacket pocket. He carefully unfolded it and handed it to Edge. “Here”

Edge read the lyrics; he could decipher Bono’s writing after all these years...”Sadie’s song” is that the title?”

“Yeah it is. I started writing whilst I waited at the church and finished it at home later” Bono waited for Edge’s reaction.

“I like it” Edge nodded. “We can work on the music to encase it, for the new album”

“Thanks Edge, the words seemed to flow out of me for this one” Bono was relieve Edge liked the lyrics.

Edge smiled. Bono’s lyrics were at their best when he unwittingly put his true emotions into them.

Spotting the piano in the corner, Bono saw his opportunity.” I’ve even though of the melodies for it”

Edge was amazed “You have?”

Bono stood up and made his way to the piano. Edge picked up their beers and followed him. Bono didn’t really have a clue how to play the piano but his ideas were good. He was obviously passionate about this song.

“As I said Bono, we’ll work on the melody later” Edge patted his friend on the back

Michael pulled up outside Liam’s church. “Won’t be a moment, just need to get something for mum”

Sadie smiled. “Fine, don’t spend too long in the confessional” she giggled.

Michael grinned as he got out the car. He strolled with a debonair strut up to the presbytery door; Sadie looked at him and sighed. As much as she loved Bono, Michael was a fine man yet there was something quite not right, she just didn’t know what. Michael turned and looked back at her, smiling. The door opened and Michael walked in.

Sadie closed her eyes, the sunlight was stinging her eyes, her head was still throbbing from the access alcohol she’d consumed last night. She fell into a daydream, the one where Bono and she hadn’t been interrupted by a priest.

************************************************************************

Michael waited impatiently at the door. He’d looked back at Sadie, waiting in the car. She looked tired. More likely she was suffering from a hangover, although admittedly she still looked ravishing.

The door opened and the housekeeper looked around the door. “Oh hello Michael, is Father Liam expecting you?”

“No I don’t think so” Michael looked at her

“Well no matter, please come in.” She closed the door behind her, wishing she was 20 years younger. Michael was a fine man with a smile that could charm the fairies.

“Please take a seat. I’ll let him know you’re here.” She said directing him into the visitors lounge.

“Thanks Mrs Doyle” Michael flashed her one of his smiles again

“Would you like a cup of tea, whilst you wait?” She inquired

“Sure that’d be grand” He replied as he took off his coat and sat on the sofa, making himself comfy.

It seemed like an eternity he waited. All these religious statues and photos were making him uncomfortable. Going to church was a totally different experience to being in a priest’s house. It was self promotion in a way, he supposed, tour operators had posters of exotic places on the wall, supermarkets goods they were selling, so a priest lounge was no different.

“Mickey” Liam walked in the room, “What a nice surprise.” Liam was actually amazed that Mickey was visiting him, only Danny had really supported his choice, as far as his brothers were concerned.

“Liam” Michael returned the greeting holding out his hand.

“Has Mrs Doyle offered you a drink?” Liam enquired gesturing at Mickey to return to his seat.

“Yes she has” Michael smiled

“Let me guess tea?” Liam giggled. “Or would you prefer something stronger?”

“No Tea will be fine, thanks” Michael grinned, “Had a heavy one last night”

“How’s Sadie? “ Liam asked

“She’s grand. She outside in the car” Michael replied

“Good Lord Mickey, go fetch her in now, for heaven’s sake” Liam was infuriated that Michael would have left her outside.

“No I don’t want her in here” his irritability evident

“Why ever not?” Liam confused by Michael’s response

“This is why not!” Michael handed the photo of Thomas Murray over to Liam.” Who’s that?”

“My god it’s our Conor. Where on earth did you get it? “Liam was puzzled.

“We were at Sadie’s parents home yesterday. That is Thomas Murray, Sadie’s dad. And this is a photo of Conor Thomas Murray” Michael handed him the small black and white photo of a baby.

“So she has a brother?” Liam couldn’t see where this conversation was going

“She had a brother. He died the day of his birth. Look at the reverse.”

Liam read the inscription on the back. “That’s Conor’s birthday.”

“Exactly. How weird is it that two Conor Thomas’ were born on the same day. I’m confused how he can look like a total stranger. I always assumed our Conor was born in Dublin.” Michael looked at Liam.

“Wow that is strange. So why have you brought this to me?” Liam enquired.

“I know Sadie was born in Drogheda and you could gain access to their records. The nuns won’t let me anywhere near it” Michael looked pleadingly at Liam

“Ok. I’ll do it for the family’s sake. But don’t utter a word about this to anyone. Not until we know the facts. I’m sure there’s an innocent explanation.” Liam tried to sound convincing

Both boys sure as they could be that their mother would never commit adultery. Or would she?

************************************************************************

The good old reliable bulkhead van chugged its way towards Munich. The boys had played their first concerts in Germany. Now they were tucked up in the back, asleep in their sleeping bags, Joe & Paul taking it in turns to drive the van.

“I wonder if the audience in Munich will be more responsive.” Paul asked Joe

“Well if the ones in Hamburg and Berlin are anything to go by, no” Joe laughed.

Paul chuckled.” Well Bono did get them going eventually, didn’t he?”

“Yeah but he had to really work at it. If Bono can’t bring them around then no one can” Joe smiled.

“Not far to the border now” Paul noted from the road sign.

As they neared the border, chaos broke out around then. Searchlights highlighted the van against the night’s darkness as soldiers with dogs and guns seemed to surround the van from every angle.

Paul & Joe looked at each other. What the hell was going on?

A guard walked upto the driver’s side speaking in German. He opened the door, and motioned that Paul get out.

Paul wasn’t going to argue with a man with a gun. “Do you speak English? En-gli-sh?” he asked the guard.

“Open the back of the van! Open the back!” the guard pushing Paul around to the back door, prodding him with his rifle.

“We’re from Ireland; we’re a rock band, U2. We’re playing Munich tomorrow night” Paul tried to explain as he was frog marched to the back door.

“What are you smuggling? Open the back!!”

Paul put the key in the lock.

*************

Inside the van the commotion outside had woken the boys.

“What the feck is going on?” Larry asked nervously

“I think we’ve reached the border.” Edge looked at the others

“They probably think Paul’s smuggling people out of the country” Bono surmised

“Why did I put my passport?” Adam worried he’d end up in a West German prison.

“Just stay still and quiet. If we don’t act nervous they won’t think we’ve anything to hide” Edge calmly suggested

“We haven’t got anything to hide” Bono looked at the others. “Adam??”

“I haven’t got anything on me, promise.” Adam crossed his hand over his chest.

They heard the key in the lock. They stayed silent.

The guard opened the van, he was greeted by the boys all tucked up in their wet sleeping bags; condensation on the inside of the van running down onto the van floor.

“Get out” the guard looked at the boys, nobody moved.” I said get out” he repeated his command pointing the gun into the van.

The boys scrambled out of the van and stood where directed. It was a freezing cold night and they tried not to shiver encase it was misconstrued as guilt.

Bono looked at the guards as they checked the bands documentation. He realised that they were of similar age to the band but with short cropped hair and guns.

After a while, the border guards were satisfied they were a travelling rock band and let them travel onwards. The boys jumped back into the bus, as Paul shut the doors Bono caught the eye of one of the guards; he smiled at Bono as he sparked up a cigarette.

Bono opened his notebook up... Stranger in a strange land he scribbled….

A soldier asked for a cigarette
His smiling face I can't forget

************************************************************************

Sadie was startled as Liam tapped on the car window.

As she opened the door, Liam laughed. “Sorry didn’t mean to make you jump”

“I was miles away, having the most marvellous dream” she sighed.

“Should I ask whether it involved Michael or should I say Bono?” Liam teased her

Sadie felt her cheeks blush” well if I’m honest…”

Liam laughed, “I take it from your reddener it was Bono. Don’t worry I won’t tell Mickey.”

“Where’s Michael?” Sadie wondered

“He’s having tea, I came out to get you, can’t have a thing of beauty like you, sitting all alone out here, now can we?” Liam smiled. This woman was astonishing, why couldn’t he have met her before his ordination he sighed..

Sadie got out the car, and shut the door. “Shouldn’t we lock the car? She questioned Liam

“No, there’s no need, although this is Dublin no one will try and take it from outside a church presbytery or from a Murphy.” He winked as he held out his hand to escort Sadie into the house.

As they walked into the church, they didn’t know that Michael was watching them. He was at the window, having moved the net curtain slightly to the side. Was it right for a priest to act that way, he wondered.
