U2 show power at Telstra Dome

IT WAS a year ago tomorrow that U2 announced it was bringing its Vertigo Tour to Australia and for the 60,000 fans who packed Telstra Dome last night it was well worth the wait.

After illness in a band member's family forced a postponement of the March tour, the Irish super group made good on their pledge to return for their first shows here in eight years, rocking the stadium with a parade of hits from their 30-year career.
The impassioned singing of peerless front man Bono, the guitar wizardry of The Edge backed by the thumping engine room of bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr showed why U2 still fends off all-comers for the title of biggest band in the world.

The monumental set, built around a giant shimmering screen and a circular runway, allowed the band to walk out into the stadium to get close to the faithful.

Rocking openers The City of Blinding Lights and Vertigo were two of a handful of tracks from the band's most recent album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb but for the most part it was a greatest hits package featuring early classics.

Meanwhile, distraught U2 fans were stranded outside Telstra Dome last night because of ticket scanning problems.

A fan from Sydney estimated up to 200 people were affected. Another fan said the problem could have resulted from concert rescheduling.

Ticketmaster could not be contacted for comment last night.
