U2 lead singer Bono was honored on Friday night as the 2003 MusiCares Person Of The Year at a black-tie charity dinner and concert at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in the heart of Manhattan. Chilly temperatures and rain didn't deter hundreds of industry VIPs, including guest speakers Bill Clinton and Bobby Shriver, from gathering to honor the musical accomplishments and humanitarian efforts of the outspoken Irish singer and activist.

The MusiCares Person Of The Year dinner is one of the most prestigious events held during GRAMMY Fest, a month-long cultural celebration that culminates with the 45th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

The night of heart-felt performances was MCed by actress Ashley Judd, who along with Bono and multiple-Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, marched through the Midwest this year as part of their Heart of America: Africa's Future And Ours tour, to raise awareness of AIDs, poverty and trade issues in Africa.

The Children of Uganda, a group of young performers from various parts of East Africa whose mission is to raise the awareness of AIDS through their music and dance, opened the night's festivities with a rousing rhythmic display. Members of the ensemble were raised in orphanages, children of one or both parents who died of AIDS.

Bono and Former President Bill Clinton

Former President Bill Clinton, who enjoyed one of the most rousing standing ovations of the night, introduced Bono, whom he met in Chicago in 1992 after U2 boldly asked to share a security detail escort through traffic. The loquacious and charismatic Bono seized the opportunity to share his social agenda with the crowd of music industry power players and various political leaders in attendance, including Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, Eunice Shriver, Robert DeNiro (whom Bono described as "the real mayor of New York"), Salmon Rushdie and David Bowie.

Calling 2003 a period of "nervous times," Bono warned the Bush administration against making Saddam Hussein a martyr, and spoke of resolutions reached with the Irish Republican Army a decade ago and debt relief granted by the U.S. to poverty-ridden third world nations as the kind of successes constructive dialog can bring. "The world is much more malleable than you think," he said.

The energy in the ballroom then pitched higher when things shifted to concert-mode, as a diverse group of artists took the stage to honor U2's music and Bono's humanitarian work. Some of the performance highlights included B.B. King and Wynonna's gutsy rendition of "When Love Came To Town" (King played and sang on the original recording of the song), and No Doubt's reggae swing through "The Sweetest Thing," punctuated with horn quotes of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood," with the help of Jamaican rhythm section Sly & Robbie.

Also memorable was Norah Jones' turn under the spotlight. The exquisite and petite singer showed why she is up for five GRAMMYs with a soft but emotionally charged take on "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of." Patti LaBelle, backed by a full gospel choir, acknowledged Bono with an affectionately shouted "That's my dawg!," and turned in a rousing "Angel Of Harlem."

Garbage captivated the audience with "Pride (In The Name Of Love)," especially when singer Shirley Manson sauntered into the crowd for the final verse and chorus. Elvis Costello sang an angry version of "Kite" before announcing that he'd seen seven shows on the most recent U2 tour, noting that "All they sing about is love" as he brought Bono and U2 guitarist the Edge on stage.

Other performers included Sheryl Crow, Mary J. Blige, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. "Saturday Night Live" regular Jimmy Fallon gave a hysterical impression of U2 bassist Adam Clayton, who resigned himself to Bono getting "yet another award."

The evening came to a close with Bono seizing the opportunity to vent a lounge jones and perhaps deliberately downplay the night's lavish praise, singing Frank Sinatra's "That's Life" and Cole Porter's "Night And Day" before ending with U2's Oscar-nominated contribution to Martin Scorsese's Gangs Of New York, "The Hands That Built America."

U2 has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide and won 14 GRAMMY Awards including two consecutive Record Of The Year awards at the 43rd and 44th GRAMMY Awards. U2 has supported Amnesty International, Greenpeace, and the Burma Action Campaign. Since 1998, Bono has been an active supporter of the International Jubilee 2000 Drop The Debt Campaign, which seeks to forgive the unpaid debts of the world's poorest countries to mark the new millennium. He has used his fame to focus media attention on debt, poverty and AIDS in Africa, and to get access to the world's most powerful politicians.

The Recording Academy established MusiCares in 1989 in an effort to focus the resources and attention of the music industry on human service issues that directly impact the health and welfare of the music community. Proceeds from the annual Person Of The Year tribute provide essential support for MusiCares' Financial Assistance Program that ensures music people have a compassionate place to turn to in times of financial, medical and personal hardships.

Why don't we circulate petitions trying to get someone to show this? It's too good not to be on. Man, that sounds like it was one amazing show. I'm looking forward to Bono, Edge and Coldplay tonight!!! :censored:

Let's get those petitions going around, and then we can send them to the networks! If you have a U2 site (I don't) start one on your site!

This is a U2 site. ;)

Seriously, I think that the network execs are going to be a bit cautious. I heard the Slane special didn't do all that well. Fingers crossed though!
