    U2 - The Fourth Masterpiece

I agree with 387. I'd put War in the top 3 ahead of TUF. Yes Red Light is a clunker but each album has them (IMO.) Back then there was such a thing as an album side and War's 1st side was SBS Seconds NYD Like a Song Drowning Man:applaud: Pretty close to the M word- IMO. The 2nd side fell off a...

Favorite "Obscure Songs" off each album:

Great topic. These are my favorites on each album excluding singles and title tracks. Rejoice. Seconds, Like a Song, Surrender. Promenade, A sort of Homecoming  In God's Country. Ultraviolet, Acrobat. Playboy Mansion (My all-time underrated song.) New York/ Grace  One Step...

FACT: Bono and his lyric writing is ruining U2

Rivergoat needs to post more often. :applaud:

    Lets talk about Yahweh

By coincidence I listened to this coming to work this morning. Such a great song, though Bono overdoes it on some of the choruses. Beautiful thought and message. :applaud:

Most Overrated U2 Song vs Most Underrated U2 Song

Been a U2 fan since 83. Overrated- Pride. It's a great song, but doesn't belong in the canon of all-time U2 songs such as SBS, NYD, IWF, Bad, etc. IMO the beatification of King had already been done to death by that time, but maybe that's just me. (My parents were in the civil rights...

    Worst Song U2 has written?

I don't get Trying to Throw.. Its a throwaway song about nothing in a sea of brillance. The songs around it (The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Light My Way, Acrobat and yes, LIB) are brillant. I could listen to them 100 times and find something new in the music and I could write papers on the lyrics...

    Worst Song U2 has written?

I just skimmed the thread but I'm surprised no one mentioned "Trying to Throw your arms around the world" (assuming they didn't.) Skipping that one makes AB much better. But EP and America from UF is my choice.

So why does bono say Uno, Dos, tres...catorce?

And of course I AM is translated as Yahweh, which is the last song on the album. This makes a lot of sense, actually. It connects the first song to the middle song (All Because of You with the You being I AM) with the last song (Yahweh.) Or you can believe the alcohol story.

So...what is your all time favorite U2 song?

Sunday Bloody Sunday with One a close second.

Rank Your Favorite Songs on the Album Part 8: War

I was in college and didn't even have TV when War came out. I'd barely heard of u2. I was at a friend's house and NYD came on on MTV. I was captivated. The sound, the piano, the snow, Bono's voice. :applaud: It was so beautiful- and so haunting. I got the album a few months later and it...

The best U2 song ever written is...

Sunday Bloody Sunday is when they became U2. That's when they found their voice. It's brilliant on so many levels and IMO their best ever. Actually I'd say it's the best rock song ever- if there can be such a thing. I think Bono would agree that SBS is one of their best if you could pin him...

The words sung during "Ultraviolet" are "Ultraviolet"

Still think it's ultraviolet light. In other words, invisible light or black light.

    So, Ultraviolet interpretations...

VP, just came back after being away for a while. I was in Best Buy and was going to get Zooropa but they did not have it. They had all other U2 albums but not that one. But thanks for remembering me. I'll get it soon but I hate going shopping and I don't own an Ipod (I'm showing my age. :D)...

    Religious Meanings in NLOTH

White as Snow is clearly scriptural. "Who can forgive forgiveness where forgiveness is not? Only the lamb as white as snow." Christ is referred to the lamb many times in Scripture.

Is there spiritual meaning behind Sunday Bloody Sunday?

You are just missing one thing- the last line of the song... "The real battle just begun, to claim the victory Jesus won on Sunday..." Which of course was on Easter Sunday.

    Grace

Did you really mean to leave out MLK and 40? Wow. MLK, 40, Grace and Yahweh close their albums very nicely. Grace and 40 are IMO the 2 best closers.

    Grace

IMO one of the best songs on the album. And it connects nicely to Beautiful Day (1st song on the album.) You thought you'd found a friend To take you out of this place Someone you could lend a hand In return for grace I love how U2 connects their songs on albums- it's like a journey.

We still need a new song- what about A Sort of Homecoming? I'll get Zooropa soon.

What would you compare it to? TUF? AB?

    So, Ultraviolet interpretations...

LOL. I never got around to buying Zooropa so I don't know any of the songs. (I took the 90s off- u2 didn't seem so important with 3 small kids.) I bought AB in about 03 and Pop in 06 so I wil probably buy Zooropa soon- especially after reading the "intensive analysis" that is sure to come...

    So, Ultraviolet interpretations...

VP said "Like Ali alluded to, I often think that sometimes Bono might not be sure of the exact meaning, or it may be ambiguous to him. Or, as I said above, perhaps they're simply too personal to discuss. And sometimes, I think his/their interpretations evolve over time." I didn't want to paste...

    So, Ultraviolet interpretations...

VP and Ali- great stuff. I think I had such a hard time with TUF because at that time Bono rarely sang so personally. It was usually about big things (War, God, heroin addiction, MLK, martyrs, etc) and not so much personal things. I do see now that "rivers run cold" probably is a play on...

    So, Ultraviolet interpretations...

Wow- look what I started about TUF. Sorry about the hijack. Sadly I'm no closer to "loving" the song TUF. I remember an MTV interview with Bono about TUF when he said that he got the name from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki paintings but TUF as a concept was ABOUT the fire that burned in people...
