    NLOTH. Week 1

Sorry if this has already been posted here, but I thought this LA Times article on the "slow" sales for NLOTH is better than other professionally published pieces on the subject. It puts the album's sales in perspective with the band's past releases, calls HTDAAB's 840K an anomaly, and points...

Will they sell out stadiums in the USA?

Unfortunately, I can't see this tour ending up as anything other than PopMart part 2 in the eyes of the media. Just like "only" selling 480K copies of NLOTH in its first week is being spun as a disappointed, playing to anything less than capacity crowds every night is going to be positioned as a...

Anyone notice the guitar riff to NLOTH (the song)...

There are what, seven basic notes in music? How many different ways can they be used? It's inevitable that you'll find similarities, so what's the problem? I think Walkon274, you are splitting hairs to split hairs. Or you're a troll, which ever comes first. And if true originality is your...

Letterman Wednesday (3/4): "I'll Go Crazy..."

I have no facts to back me up, but Fez-Being Born just strikes me as NLOTH's Acrobat. I hope to be proven wrong. Anyhow, great performance of Crazy. I hope this helps the song receive the praise it deserves. Definitely the most underrated song on the album so far.

Letterman Wednesday (3/4): "I'll Go Crazy..."

I gotta say all of the new material sounds absolutely fantastic live! And we haven't even heard a couple of potentially huge songs - Unknown Caller and Moment of Surrender. And there's Fez-Being Born, which I fear may not be played live. Bring on the tour!

Ranking the songs after >10 days

NLOTH: 4/5 (point deducted for reusing of the riff from The Fly) Magnificent: 4/5 Moment of Surrender: 5/5 Unknown Caller: 5/5 I"ll Go Crazy...: 4/5 (point deducted for the silly title, otherwise a great, joyful pop song) Boots: 3/5 (not as bad its press) SUC: 3/5 (not as bad as some think) Fez...

NLOTH Album Reviews - Professional / Web / Mag Reviews ONLY

That's an extremely noble but Sisyphean task. There are going to be hundreds of reviews when it's all said and done. I'd recommend just keeping an eye on the album's Metacritic page. It won't have every review, but it will capture the major ones. BTW, the Metacritic score is now down to 80 from...

NLOTH Album Reviews - Professional / Web / Mag Reviews ONLY

I wouldn't go so far as saying the reviews are decidedly mixed. Pop had mixed reviews. I'd say this album is in general getting positive to very positive reviews, with the expected middling to negative reviews coming from (mostly) expected sources. By my recollection, U2 has never received...

NLOTH Album Reviews - Professional / Web / Mag Reviews ONLY

Re: Time Magazine... well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man... Not to be too harsh on the subjective opinions of others, but IMHO I think the "no melodies" argument is one that doesn't hold up after repeat listens. On the surface, sure it may be easy to miss a melody here or...

The one change I would have made to make this the most complete U2 album I've heard.

I have to say this thread is full of a lot of fail. I get a good laugh out of the people who act like they were in the studio with the band or better yet, inside their heads while they were composing the songs, ordering the songs, writing the liner notes, choosing the art work, etc. Call me a...

Here is the Arizona Republic's review, posted for no other reason than completeness. I have no doubts that by the time all the reviews are in, every song will be called either a classic or a dud. AZ Central (3 1/2 out of 5) Key quote:

NLOTH 2 Day Pop Up Installation in LA!

Forgive me if this has been posted somewhere else, but I just saw that Filter Magazine is hosting a No Line on the Horizon 2 Day Pop Up installation in Los Angeles. From the Filter website: "Come and celebrate U2’s twelfth studio album featuring Anton Corbijn’s U2 Photography and his new film...

Moment Of Surrender is overrated thread

As a big fan of almost everything Brian Eno has done and also a fan of almost everything U2 has done, MOS couldn't be better. It's a great marriage between Eno's transcendental soundscapes and U2's sense for drama and emotion. The combination is just brilliant. And I can't wait to hear what...

    NLOTH Album Reviews Pt 3

I'm a fan of Greg and Jim DeRogatis' radio show "Sound Opinions", so I was anxious to hear their thoughts on the album. I'm glad to hear Greg is mostly positive, although I'd encourage him to replay 'COL' and 'Crazy' a few times and then get back to us. Both deserve a few more plays.

    4 Big U2 Fans I've Spoken To

For every one (or four) negative anecdotal comments, there will be an equal (or greater) number of "I played it for my 'casual U2 fan' friend and he/she liked it" comments. In the end it really only matters what YOU think about it. You don't need to validate your opinion with friends, fans...

    NLOTH Album Reviews Pt 3

Here's another review (of sorts), from the Edmonton Sun. It leans towards the positive, but doesn't come down on one side or another. Sorry if this has already been posted. Key quote: "...it's a murkier, moodier and more meditative work that tempers the band's anthemic tendencies with plenty...

Here's the exact NME quote: "Sexy boots! It's U2, kicking off proceedings with the lead single from 'No Line On The Horizon'. "Their greatest album," according to Q. Actually, it's easily their worst." Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man. ...

    Moment Of Surrender Appreciation Thread

I really would have liked to have been in studio when they played this one. Wow. There must have been some champagne bottles opened afterward. Yeah, wow. I'd really like to hear a MOS/Bad live combo, although I don't know if I could stand 20 minutes of goose bumps.

You've heard GET ON YOUR BOOTS? - Post all thoughts, reviews, discussion HERE Part 4

Here's my crack at some amateur analysis...FWIW: There are few bands out there than induce such analysis over one song. Few bands carry such weighty expectations with each release. For a seemingly large number of people, a new U2 must be one of two things. It’s either a classic or its crap...
