HTDAAB doesn't have a weak track IMO

Yeah but I like loud. :D It gives the songs more power. But it's just down to opinion I guess.

    Let's dismantle an atomic bomb

Vertigo - Boy but kind of new reflecting the garage rock phenomenen Miracle Drug - UF/JT SYCMOYO - ATYCLB. Successor to Stuck... LAPOE - R+H in my opinion. I don't understand why more people haven't said R+H? R+H was a tribute to all kinds of rock music album and this song is a...

HTDAAB doesn't have a weak track IMO

I think the production and mixing are fine. I guess it's down to taste but I love Lillywhite's use of guitars on Vertigo, Miracle Drug, All Because of You, Crumbs... and OOTS. As for AMAAW - what is wrong with this song? I adore it - I see it as one of U2's best love songs. Gorgeous melody...

HTDAAB doesn't have a weak track IMO

It's a really good album. I don't understand why some of you on these boards don't like it. Okay it isn't the cinematic sound of JT or the gritty experimentalism of AB but it is more of a rock album than ATYCLB was and I think it's an achievement for a band in their mid-40s. Another thing is...

    4th of July Appreciation Thread

I love that album and that song is crucial in sustaining the album's ambient tendencies. Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois are geniuses. I even think their less is more production on ATYCLB is good as well.

    HTDAAB...lame duck?

Well at least U2 aren't R.E.M. Around the Sun didn't even make it into the billboard top 10. At least HTDAAB hit the top 10.

    Vertigo: Gimmick or Classic?

I think it's one of U2's best songs. In fact I prefer it to BD for some reason and I think it is certainly on par with The Fly.

    U2 and Blur - similarities...

To me Think Tank more resembles U2's Pop rather than AB. I have always thought that with the dance beats on TT. It must also be remembered that Ben Hillier produced TT and he programmed some of the songs on Pop.

Crumbs from your table is my favourite track

I've listened to HTDAAB once and so far my favourite track is the one that the critics disliked - Crumbs From Your Table. I really love that song the most - the ringing guitar is reminiscent of the guitar on The Joshua Tree album and the tune is gorgeous. Why didn't the critics like such a...

    MERGED ----> Q Review of HTDAAB + Q Magazine, what a joke

Four stars out of 5 means a very good album but not a classic so I am a bit disappointed. ATYCLB got 4 stars so Q are saying HTDAAB is only equal to ATYCLB. I didn't like ATYCLB so I've got to say that has me a bit worried. Achtung Baby got 5 stars from Q. Still Pop only got 4 stars and I...

    The goodness of Electrical Storm

I adore Electrical Storm. I personally think it is better and more emotive than Beautiful Day. I honestly do think it is one of U2's best songs. And I personally think William Orbit's mix and production is quite simply gorgeous and Bono's vocals are incredible. The chorus lyrics are...

'Silver and Gold' - raw and criminally underrated

I don't like it to be honest...it's just another pompous rock song from R+H.

Be honest, ATYCLB is not a "great" U2 album and the new U2 album needs to be better

Fair enough, but how can you prefer Rattle and Hum to War, UF, Zooropa and Pop?! Like I said it has its moments and is a good rock record but it just so pompous.

    What is wrong with ATYCLB??

The bottom line for me is ATYCLB is a good to very good album with some good to very good U2 songs just not the rock masterpiece that I was hoping it was going to be. Let's hope the new U2 album will be a rock masterpiece. But maybe I'm hoping for too much. By the way although it is poppy I...

    What is wrong with ATYCLB??

Maybe what it is is that U2 fans who dislike ATYCLB dislike it because there is no compromise between good songwriting and experimentation. And that would be better than just imitating the 80s sound in pop form. Still I think ATYCLB is a decent record - just not the grand rock masterpiece like...

    Which is U2's "first masterpiece?"

Agree 100%. Eloquently put. Yes The Joshua Tree has more "classic" tracks than UF but how can you ignore the beautiful flow and unique sound of UF? True the sound of JT is more cinematic but it does not in my opinion have the sweeping atmospherics of UF. So the bottom line to me is UF is the...

Be honest, ATYCLB is not a "great" U2 album and the new U2 album needs to be better

How can you say Rattle and Hum is a better album than UF, War, Zooropa and Pop?! Yes it has it's moments like Heartland, Desire, Angel of Harlem and All I Want Is You but other than that, although it is a decent rock record, it is all a bit pompous and not as good as UF etc.

    Which is U2's "first masterpiece?"

After all the debating about "third masterpieces" in the ATYCLB thread I thought this would be a good topic for debate - which is U2's "first masterpiece?" Is it Boy or October with their signs of early promise (yes I've contradicted myself there) or is it War with it's striking rock energy or...

Be honest, ATYCLB is not a "great" U2 album and the new U2 album needs to be better

Can I please defend myself here? I guess I am possibly wrong to say it was billed as JT part 2 but in quite a few ways I am right. I remember when the album was being promoted someone (it might have been Eno) said it was the sound of U2 making music like they did in the mid-80s? That implies...

Be honest, ATYCLB is not a "great" U2 album and the new U2 album needs to be better

Be honest, ATYCLB is not a "great" U2 album and the new U2 album needs to be better That's just my opinion I'm afraid - I don't think ATYCLB is a "great" U2 album. It just doesn't give me that feeling that the other U2 albums gave me. To me it feels bland and derivative. There's nothing...

what was your first u2 album?

I can't remember actually - I remember getting into U2 because my Dad used to play The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby in the car. I think the first U2 album I bought for myself was Zooropa.

My thoughts on the delayed ATYCLB follow up

Well it's disappointing about the album being delayed yet again but there's not much we can do about that can we? But still it does raise some concerns. The band and everyone near had said "it's almost done" and then all of a sudden we're waiting til September 2004 if we are lucky. Is the new...

Best Of 1990-2000: Officially A Commercial Failure?

In a way U2's 1990-2000 best of is similar to Madonna's Greatest Hits Volume 2. Both haven't sold anywhere near as well as the previous one and both are based on part of their careers in which their sales were lower. e.g. Madonna's GHV2 was based on the low selling Erotica and Bedtime Stories...

    Overrated/Underrated Songs

You're not the only one - I also think Beautiful Day is U2's most overrated song. I just can't get into it in the same way I love Streets, Heartland, One etc. To me the tune isn't really there - it lacks a killer hook and vocal line. Just my opinion but in my eyes Beautiful Day is very, very...
