From the Sky Down, Davis Guggenheim's Achtung Baby documentary to premiere at TIFF

Right. They really need to release an album they're willing to lose on. All 3 albums in the 90s could have been losses. In fact, I was about 12 when Zooropa came out, and I shed tears when I first heard it. I thought I'd lost U2 for good. But these albums, especially Zooropa and POP, were...

It's my favorite moment on the album. And I think it's Edge's best solo in over a decade.

I like the direction you're going here, but how can you not include POP in the era of thematically consistent album/tours? I thought POPmart was arguably the most consistent, almost to a fault. Great point. I agree completely.

The "3 crap records and your out" rule

I wouldn't want to change a thing about AB, because most times I spin that disc I postpone everything else in my life. But your comments on Wild Horses and God Part II actually make sense to me. I couldn't care less which Bono sang on most songs from ATYCLB, with the exception of Stuck in a...

The "3 crap records and your out" rule

And going back to the general discussion, I can accept Bono/U2 going through a song-writing drought. It happens to every good song-writer/band at some pt in their career: Dylan, Van Morrison, James Taylor, Rolling Stones, etc. But what frustrates me is their unwillingness to let their artistic...

The "3 crap records and your out" rule

I'm quite surprised Trip and Some Days are included in this discussion, as they have long been some of my absolute favorites. Now, I don't 'like' Boots, but am I the only one to prefer it to its earlier incarnation, Vertigo? To me the riff, rhythm, harmonies, etc...while forced and weird...are...

    The BIGGEST Album Poll EVER!

I knew Winter, but I'd never heard the full version of Soon (just snippets from videos w/ 360's intro). Just found it on youtube. Wow. What a song. That would have really given NLOTH a different flavor in keeping with my 3 favorite songs: NLOTH, MOS and Cedars.

The "3 crap records and your out" rule

Fair enough. My point was that people always bash Pop for how it was produced. I can imagine the songs on Pop being produced a dozen different ways, and I'm sure I'd still prefer it to any of the last three albums. But as for melodies alone, you're right, ATYCLB was better. (maybe.)

better song writing overall. yes sir. (IMHO)

The "3 crap records and your out" rule

Well said. I too share these hopes. And I think DM is a great choice to execute them. HOWEVER...all the neat album CONCEPTS in the world don't mean **** without some true melodic song writing magic. That's why, to me, 1987-1997 was such a great era, regardless of the concepts, anti-media...
