Also 5’8” but almost every GA situation I’ve ever been in has been at a show where there is a pit and/or crowd surfing. So when the majority of the crowd is moving anyway, it’s pretty easy to get to any part of it I want to be in at any given time. In other words, easy enough to make sure I’m not behind World’s Tallest Man or Farting Person.

I'm 6'6" and am always self-conscious about blocking people's views, enough so that I don't like doing GA. I try and let shorter people stand in front of me where I can, but when the concert is over I always notice a bare spot behind me where no one was standing. Sorry everyone!

I'm 6'1 or 6'2 I think, and if there's noticeably shorter people behind me I always offer to let them in front of me, but I too end up having views obscured at times.

I think your point about women is a good one though inte. It's one of those things that has taken me all these years to realise... like holy shit we just go through life with so little forethought as men, and it's taken reading about or listening to their experiences and years of learning for me to realise how my behaviour can affect others.

Went to Golden Plains festival on the weekend, which is just such a fucking delight, festivals don't get much better. Spent the majority of Saturday with heat stroke which was really unpleasant and made me miss sets by Perfume Genius and King Krule, which suuucked, cos they both sounded so fucking good. Still managed to catch a few good ones though. The Avalanches were fucking amazing, so much energy and so cool that they've looped in Eliza Wolfgramm and Spank Rock for vocals. Grizzly Bear were great, too, although I regret not being in the thick of it for my favourite song, Fine For Now, was hanging out with friends. Big Boi was a bit of a letdown though :( but I've already seen Outkast twice, so that was no big deal really.

5'8 is, surprisingly, quite tall for SoCal. I'm rarely blocked by anyone because of all the short Latinos [emoji38]

If I went to a gig in the Netherlands I wouldn't be able to see shit.

There are just fewer women in general at most of the punk/hardcore shows I’ve been to, and there’s a reason the homoerotic man pile sausage fest at the front of the stage is usually referred to as such.

Metal shows have to be the worst for sausage-fests, especially prog metal where if you can even spot a woman you win a prize. The Australian punk scene... kinda comes down to sub-genre, city, even specific band. Generally the emo side of it has pretty decent diversity in the audiences. But any hardcore band that just shouts about getting drunk and smoking weed in summer while playing the same three chords as fast as possible for half an hour? Yeah that's gonna be dude central.

I’m 6’5” and insist on being at the front of GA. Screw all you shorties.

Nah. The few times I do GA anymore, I usually hang towards the back, one because I don’t enjoy feeling crammed in between people for a couple hours, and two, I can see just fine anyway. Exception being an Elbow gig last year where I was three rows back from the front, but I didn’t feel bad because the floor was tiered, so about every 5 feet back was a step higher. Good views for everyone!

I seem to remember NSW and "douchebag seats." I have firmly crossed over into that territory now. I don't remember the last time I was in GA.

This is one of the best starts to a year in quite a while IMO. Already a dozen albums I think are very good/great:

Hookworms - Microshift

Thanks for this recommendation, LM. It's great. I may be completely off base with this, but The Soft Season is like James Mercer singing on a Washed Out track.

Somehow I have never been to a legit
metal show. Or at least I don’t recall it if I have (there’s a slight chance I was kicked in the head at one over a decade ago and forgot all about it).

IDK what happens on the emo side
of things because I avoid those bands. Not even sure if those bands still exist. And the bigger the band is, the more diversity there tends to be because there’s just a larger fan base to draw from—the best example I’ve experienced here would be the transition from Dropkick Murphys shows being like 80% dudes who go to punk rock shows into 100% douches who want to pretend they’re Irish.

Hardcore bands here are like, or at least the ones I like, a lot of “my bros are my family and blood is thicker than anything and if you’re not with us we’ll fuck you up.” That’s not generally known to be a rallying cry for female concert-goers.

Mate, emo's thriving, the wave of so-called "Midwest emo" bands means it's probably in better health than it's ever been. Especially now that all the pop punk guyliner music mistagged as emo has fallen by the wayside.

This just makes me think of bands down here like the Smith Street Band, who started out in the punk scene with audiences of 80% punk rock dudes, but who transitioned into being indie stalwarts pretending that they're still punk, with audiences of 100% douches who think punk is flipping the bird in the air while drinking warm beer at an outdoor festival.

Yeah, probably. :)
I'm 185 (is that 6'2"?), which is kinda average height here nowadays. So if I'm a bit further to the back, there's a big chance that other (tall) people are blocking my view. It's often much easier in other countries. :)

Nor'easter #3 in 11 days (officially a blizzard this time) has passed.
Only lost power for 9 hours yesterday, section of the back yard fence blew down (luckily saw it before the dog made a break for it), and after clearing a foot of snow last night awoke to find that bitch Mother Nature dropped 2 more inches whilst I slept.
And another one lining up for next week.

Lousy Smarch weather.

I’ve fallen pretty hard into a trap of really only listening to bands I’ve been listening to for years when it comes to harder music. I’m getting old in that genre or something. And Denver ain’t exactly a hotbed of punk rock in any form. I saw Agnostic Front play to a crowd of like 40 people on a Wednesday in a tiny venue the size of which I could only dream to see them play on the east coast. The pop punk guyliner bands are still what I think of as emo, since that unfortunate era erased my memory of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate or even Jawbreaker. (Mike Ness is still the only guy who should ever be allowed to wear eyeliner) So I really have no idea what this midwest emo is.

Reminds me of that band with that godawful hey delilah song. I had some record label compilation I got from the radio station another lifetime ago that was filled with the whiniest pop punk I’ve ever heard, and they had a song on there that might as well have been a totally different band.

I feel like this is the part where Hewson and Martha tell me to shut up about all this “i’m old” talk because I’m still under 35. But I’ll be 34 in a couple months for fucks sake

Wait, wait. Are you saying the fuckheads who recorded that insipid Hey Delilah trash that I once had to yell at a neighbour to turn down actually once recorded... pop punk?!

I've been spending a little money on music lately. Paid for downloads of Tracey Thorn's new one (Pitchfork wasn't lying, it's fantastic), and Ty Segall. (Probably my AOTY so far).

Then I went to Amoeba and got some used CDs of albums I really wanted in higher quality/packaging: A Moon Shaped Pool, Fear Fun, and I Love You Honeybear. All were less than $10. And I picked up the Sinatra Reprise boxed set for $7.99. With 80 songs, what a steal.

Those Misty albums are really amazingly designed in terms of all the supplemental material. He practically wrote a short novel for Fear Fun.

Best album I've heard so far this hear is Blood by Rhye. Recommended for anyone who likes the indie R&B thing.

I was at Foxwoods this time.

Not exactly a bad place to be during a storm.
