And it's in no danger of ending. The endurance of these two combatants is unbelievable.

I think WWII started over a debate on who grossed more between Count Basie and Artie Shaw.

This thread earns a technical proficiency level of 10 Moggios.

Amazing numbers in South America for what is now the biggest tour in recent history. Really eye-popping.

I never said there wasn't any "strategic scheduling".

EXACTLY. So why do you continue to argue with FACTS for PAGES on this thread (and plenty of others)? It's simply astonishing.

It has happened in Europe and the United States/Canada by playing two legs of each in seperate years. The Rolling Stones did the same on A Bigger Bang Tour.

Some cities that are skipped on the first leg through get played on the second leg through. Thats essentially it in a nutshell, and I will I agree it has an impact, I question the degree of that impact.

No, they DID NOT utilize the same approach. The Rolling Stones DID NOT only play 16 markets on the first A Bigger Bang tour in North America. The Stones also DID NOT only play 15 UK/European markets on the first A Bigger Bang tour leg there either, etc.

Now lets look at the rest of the world outside Europe and United States/Canada to see if there was anything we would call Strategic Scheduling:

AUSTRALIA:

U2 on 360 played 8 shows!
2 stadium shows in Sydney
2 stadium shows in Melbourne
2 stadium shows in Brisbane
2 stadium shows in Perth

Where is the strategic scheduling by U2? This is the largest number of stadium shows U2 has EVER played in Australia on a single tour. The only major market not hit by U2 was Adelaide.

There was NO Adelaide show and Jay Z opened for them to help sell tix. It was also their first Perth show in 14 YEARS, genius.

You can't argue that U2 strategically scheduled anything in Australia...

I just did above.

NEW ZEALAND:
Rolling Stones on a bigger bang played two stadium shows.
1 stadium show in Auckland
1 stadium show in Wellington

U2 on 360 played two stadium shows.
2 stadium shows in Auckland

How does one strategically schedule a tour of New Zealand with just one leg? LOL

Hmmm, let's see. Because U2 ONLY played Auckland, with no shows in Wellington or even Christchurch.

MEXICO:
Rolling Stones played two stadium shows on a Bigger Bang.
1 stadium show in Mexico City
1 stadium show in Monterrey

U2 is playing 3 stadium shows on 360
All three shows in Mexico City, in a 360 configeration in the 5th largest stadium on the planet!

U2 ONLY played Mexico City. They DID NOT play Monterrey or Guadalajara.

SOUTH AMERICA:

U2 played 7 stadium shows on 360
3 stadiums in Argentina
3 stadiums in Brazil
1 stadium in Chile

This is more than what U2 did on Vertigo and the same number of shows they played on POPMART, their first time to South America.

U2 had ticketed shows in all the major countries. The Stones only had ticketed shows in one country. 7 stadium shows by U2 compared to just two by the Stones. There is certainly no strategic scheduling here by U2.

U2 ONLY played THREE markets.

I simply cannot believe you actually think U2 have not utilized strategic scheduling more heavily than ANYONE. You're either full of it or something else is wrong with you? Which is it?

1. The Giants Stadium shows would obviously take into account that both U2 and Muse did not play Philadelphia.

2. Philadelphia has essentially the same impact on the Washington DC market as it does the New York market.

3. In any event, assessing Muse's percentage draw for the 360 show in New York would not be impacted by the fact that both artist did not play Philadelphia.

4. Muse grossed 538,000 in August 2007 in New York, and there is no way they would bring in more than that for the U2 shows where the average ticket price is double theirs, and they are playing a shortened set early in the day.

I've just basically PROVEN what Muse's US draw was in 2009 and yet you still find a way to somehow deflect it. Facts don't sit well with you, do they?

Well, you are wrong on both counts.

1. The Bigger Bang 1st leg in Europe took place in 2006, just three years before the first leg in Europe for 360 took place NOT FIVE YEARS.

2. The Bigger Bang 2nd leg in Europe took place in 2007, just two years before the first leg of 360 and 3 years before the 2nd leg of 360 in Europe.

So at best were talking about 3 years not 5 years between the two tours.

You STILL don't get the point. Which is, a VIRTUALLY NON strategically scheduled tour, with outdated stats that would be HIGHER today vs. a HEAVILY strategically scheduled tour, with current stats.

As for strategic scheduling by both tours in Europe, the biggest factor for both tours is that they were broken up into TWO LEGS, one leg in one year, and the next leg in the following year.

1st leg Bigger Bang had 19 shows in Europe
1st leg 360 had 24 shows in Europe

2nd leg Bigger Bang had 30 shows in Europe
2nd leg 360 had 22 shows in Europe.

The Rolling Stones first leg was essentially the same as far as the UK when compared to 360 in terms of number of shows. The Stones played Portugal on their first leg, but did not play Spain. U2 played Spain on the first leg, but did not play Portugal. The Stones had more shows in Germany and shows in Switzerland and Austria, but U2 had more shows in Italy, France, Netherlands, Poland, as well as two shows in Croatia on their first leg.

When looking at the first leg of both tours in Europe, you can't say that one was more strategically scheduled than the other. If anything, U2 played more shows than the Stones on the first leg which should have made it more difficult to achieve a higher gross and attendance. But U2's $188 million gross on the first leg blows away the Stones $95 million gross on the first leg.

Now on the second leg, the Stones had 30 shows and basically every major country got at least one show except Austria. In general, a wider and more balanced tour leg than the first, although the per show gross and per show attendance came down even though the overall gross was higher than the first leg. U2 returned to Spain and France which they had played on the first leg, but skipped Ireland, UK, Netherlands and Sweden which they had played on the first leg.

Still, your looking at 49 shows over two legs by the Stones, and 46 shows over 2 legs by U2. Given those facts, there is very little the Stones could have done to boost their attendance and gross. They could have added more shows to the first leg, but cutting the number of shows on the 2nd leg, but while that would help 2nd leg gross and attendance in some markets, it will likely hurt first leg gross and attendance in some markets.

Live Nation essentially did the same thing for both artist in Europe. They both played about the same number of shows divided over two legs that took place in seperate years. The Stones got to $216 million, while U2 got to $319 million. So you have similar schedules, but the results showing that U2 is now way ahead of the Stones in Europe.

Oh, and you forgot to answer my question. How much do you think the Stones will gross on their next tour for Europe?

It wasn't "essentially the same" AT ALL. Because the point in this case, is MARKETS hit - which of course determines and defines strategic scheduling. Especially the HUGE difference between the A Bigger Bang and 360 tour's second UK/European legs.

A comparison of UK/European MARKETS HIT...

A Bigger Bang tour:

18 in 2006 (it would've been 20, but both Spanish shows were cancelled and/or moved to the second leg instead)
28 in 2007

Total:

46

360 tour:

15 in 2009
17 in 2010

Total:

32

That's a difference of 14 MARKETS.

You're fooling NO ONE...

Oh...and The Stones will gross more than U2 on their next tour worldwide AND in the UK/Europe, considering the factors we've already discussed countless times...

What?!?!

U2 sure as hell can do that!

Read the following!

Well, I'd like to see Barbara Streisand do the following in North America:

U2 360 TOUR: 2ND LEG NORTH AMERICAN STATS

GROSS: $123,293,286
ATTENDANCE: 1,312,068
Average Gross: $6,164,664
Average Attendance: 65,603
Average Ticket Price: $93.97
Shows: 20
Sellouts: 20

Oh and lets see Madonna do this on one leg:

U2 360 TOUR: 1ST LEG EUROPE STATS

GROSS: $188,344,444
ATTENDANCE: 1,759,222
Average Gross: $7,847,685
Average Attendance: 73,301
Average Ticket Price: $107.06
Shows: 24
Sellouts: 24

Thats an average gross of almost $8 million per show, and thats from 24 shows, not just 17!

Oh I think they can! Look at what they have done with just 78 shows on this tour:

U2 360 TOUR: TOTAL STATS TO DATE

GROSS: $519,599,484
ATTENDANCE: 5,051,275
Average Gross: $6,661,532
Average Attendance: 64,760

Shows: 78

More comparisons with pre-strategically scheduled tours!

More genius from Maoil!
:applaud:

U2's 3 night run in Sao Paulo is the third highest gross ever for a single venue....Billboard.biz just put this article up now...

U2 Breaks All-Time Tour Gross Record In Brazil | Billboard.biz

U2 easly could have sold out a 4th show in Sao Paulo making it the biggest gross ever.

U2's South American Leg just knocked out Madonna's Sticky And Sweet Tour leg in South America as the highest grossing South American Tour in history!

MOGGIO, I thought You said Madonna was a bigger draw than U2 in South America?

Lets not forget that this trip down to South America by Madonna was her first in 15 years!

MOGGIO, U2's visits on 360 to Australia, New Zealand, South America, and Mexico resemble their visits there on past tours going all the way back to ZOO TV. They also resemble tours by other artist over the past 20 years in these markets in terms of the cities that got shows.

You claimed that strategic scheduling was a new model, but these are the standard cities played when just about any artist visits these regions or countries, and its been that way for DECADES!

By the way, U2 visited the exact same cities on POPMART for Australia. Are you going to claim POPMART Australia as an example of Strategic Scheduling?

How about POPMART South America, or Vertigo South America?

You STILL don't get the point. Which is, a VIRTUALLY NON strategically scheduled tour, with outdated stats that would be HIGHER today vs. a HEAVILY strategically scheduled tour, with current stats.

Ok Moggio. Why don't you strategically schedule the Rolling Stones A BIGGER BANG EUROPE TOUR for us! Since your defining it as the number of markets hit, just subtract those 14 markets and then explain how much more the Rolling Stones would have grossed in the remaining 32 markets! Would the overall total be greater than $216 million? I mean, they only got $95 million out of playing 18 markets on the first leg. HOW WOULD PLAYING ONLY 14 MARKETS ON THE 2ND LEG YIELD A HIGHER GROSS THAN PLAYING THE 28 MARKETS THAT THEY DID, AND BY HOW MUCH?

I mean, how are you going to get the Stones to gross OVER $121 million from just playing 14 markets in 2007, as opposed to the 28 that they did?

Yes, you could force some people to travel to the larger markets by not having shows in the smaller ones, but not everyone would go. This would actually lead to a lower overall gross it appears. Also remember, that only two shows on the 2nd leg soldout, and the average for the stadium shows was only about 35,000 attendance.

I also think its more impressive for an artist to break a record for a region like Europe by playing a smaller number of markets. The Stones had to go out into the smaller areas "boondocks" to find more dollars to get to $216 million.

So what is your gross prediction for the Stones in Europe on their next tour?

Let me get this straight...
So when Madonna toured Europe in 2008, it was outstanding that she grossed so much $$ with only 16 markets visited (see the quotation provided one page back) and when U2 toured Europe one year later and grossed even more $$ with 15 markets visited (which you predicted they couldn't), you try to downsize their achievement because of the number of markets visited.

When the Mexico City shows went on sale the prices when exchanged into U.S. dollars looked like this..now it's even higher.

May 14 Mexico City Azteca Stadium
$462 Red Zone sold out
$248 Esp bajo sold out
$195 Esp bajo cabecera sold out
$195 Platea baja sold out
$133 Platea alta norte sold out
$133 Platea plus sold out
$133 Pref plus sold out
$124 Pref gral norte sold out
$81 Cancha (field) sold out
$71 Platea alta sur sold out
$71 Pref gral sur sold out
$33 General sold out

considering the capacity of azteca stadium these three shows could out gross Sao Pualo's $32 million. Sao Paulo's average ticket price was $121.5 dollars and had an average attendance of 89,000. by the look of ticket prices for mexico city it's totally plausible.

i'll be conservative and say the remainder of the 22 shows in north america will have an average gross of $6 million with an average attendance of 60,000. with mexico city we should see in the ball park around this...

Gross-$160,000,000 (north america record)
Attendance-1,600,000

Total-$740,000,000
Attendance-7,100,000

I was wondering who will have the largest gross/attendance for North America during a single tour. Correct me if I'm wrong but A Bigger Bang Tour was this?..

Total N. America stats for A Bigger Bang Tour
Gross-$300,628,363
Attendance-2,219,918
Shows-82

U2 360 Tour (Estimate)
Gross-$123,293,286+$160,000,000=roughly $283,293,286
Attendance-1,312,068+1,600,000=roughly 2,912,068
Shows-45

Wow its obvious if U2 were able to soak up the rest of the market with arena shows like the stones did, they would blow them out of the water with attendance and top their gross by at least $30 million or so..lol

She is. You're comparing her 2 1/2 year old stats, that would be HIGHER today, to U2's current stats.

MOGGIO, U2's visits on 360 to Australia, New Zealand, South America, and Mexico resemble their visits there on past tours going all the way back to ZOO TV. They also resemble tours by other artist over the past 20 years in these markets in terms of the cities that got shows.

They might resemble them...but they're not the same. And they're certainly strategically scheduled.

You claimed that strategic scheduling was a new model, but these are the standard cities played when just about any artist visits these regions or countries, and its been that way for DECADES!

They are not necessarily the "standard cities played by just about every artist who visits these regions or countries..." But that's beside the point. The point is they're strategically scheduled...but you said they weren't. Guess what? You're wrong, AS USUAL.

By the way, U2 visited the exact same cities on POPMART for Australia. Are you going to claim POPMART Australia as an example of Strategic Scheduling?

Of course. And it's not a "claim." A few were.

How about POPMART South America, or Vertigo South America?

Now you're getting the hang of it!

You're blurring the lines AGAIN by asking too many questions. So, I'll have to simplify it for you, AS USUAL:

Only 4 or 5 markets on the UK/European legs of the A Bigger Bang tour were strategically scheduled. So, if both legs had been HEAVILY strategically scheduled (ala the 360 tour), the total gross for both legs would've EASILY been over $300 million, instead of the $216 million they did gross WITHOUT heavily utilizing it. I've already given you an estimate for the Stones' next tour, if it happened to be in 2013, with 110 dates, heavy strategic scheduling and utilizing relatively strong openers. So, since you've already asked enough questions, I'll let you figure out what the total of their UK/European dates would be, considering the aforementioned factors...

You don't have it straight at all.

First of all, it's once you look at WHICH markets were strategically scheduled for Madonna (SOME) vs. WHICH markets were strategically scheduled for U2 (VIRTUALLY ALL), you'll notice a difference. Madonna's overall gross still may not have been higher than U2's at that point in time, but U2's definitely would've been lower if strategic scheduling hadn't been utilized.

Secondly, before 2009, my predictions were NOT based on strategic scheduling, since it was not used on this scale by ANYONE before the 360 tour.

Wow...it's obvious you're comparing a pre-HEAVILY strategically scheduled tour, with stats that are a few years old to a HEAVILY strategically scheduled tour, with stats that are current.

And once again, The Stones could've easily played more shows on the A Bigger Bang tour...
