I gave it a 2, after such a long wait, and reading snippets in recent months, quotes from Eno, Lanois, & band members about this being a U2 masterpiece I am very disappointed, I sincerely hope the rest of the album is a massive improvement on this, I really think if any other band released this, it would be forgotten about very quickly, very disappointing:down:

For me its sounds like Discotechque, Elevation, Vertigo, Beautiful Day & Fast Cars have been distilled into a single 100% vodka shot. Its short, sharp and at first I didn't like it but after a few more shots I started to get into it (just like Vodka). 7 out of 10 then. Its been done before, but the mix when listening on headphones is exceptional. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

it still didn't move the earth for me. i'll give it a 6 for the challenging disfunctional structure that makes it a really corageous move for such an expected 1st single.

6 on a u2 scale, on a 2008-2009 music releases scale i would give it a 9.

it still didn't move the earth for me but all the mess that is going on in this song is putting me on fire for nloth.

for better or worse i am sure that i will rate it differently in one or two weeks.

I can only go 6, but I will admit it grows after several listens. After the first listen I would have given a 5, perhaps after several more I could say 7. As far as U2's first singles go, I like this less than any others.

R U kidding me???...F'n 10!! :hyper:

It could very well be 4+ years of anticipation...but what the hell...euphoria, take me away....

Here's what I like about boots...

--That riff is....crunchy

--The bass is aggressive and unrelenting...can not get it out of my head!

--Fast...play boots then vertigo, one after the other (as someone suggested)...vertigo sounds like its on prozac (to mine ears anyway)

--The louder you play it, the better it gets!

--Lyrically, still trying to come to grips with some of the divergent themes....

Looking forward to 3/3!

8 - for initial first impressions + they're breaking new ground. I also believe this will rock live.

3

I don't like it and I can't even take it seriously as a "song". Worst U2 first single since Fire

6/10 - Only, Larry's drum intro and 2:10 and beyond is listenable for me. But those parts are incredible. The rest is WAY too poppy (not the album, the genre) for me.

I'd give it a "2" at the moment. I have to say I'm really disappointed. I agree with the people saying it sounds like a mix between Vertigo and Fast Cars. Hopefully the rest of the album will be better, because this song isn't exactly the radical departure they were promising... :reject:

It's been a long time since anyone in/near the band has hinted at a "radical departure" (if anyone ever did), let alone promised one.

Interesting that you say "poppy", because the chorus is distinctly psychedelic and droning. And the riff is very classic/hard rock.

I don't consider Boots poppy at all, it's quite heavy rocking, if you ask me. The distorted guitars give the song a psychedelic feel. Bono's singing fits the song very well. Drumming is very good. I'm not so excited about the "Let me in the sound" bit, and the ending kind of sucks. I think all the comparing is tiring, because OF COURSE there are always elements in U2 songs that may sound like something they've done before. I give it a 7/10.

4 for me and that's generous:down:...If it wasn't a U2 song I would never have given it a second listen.

It's actually kind of embarrassing...When Beautiful Day, or Vertigo were released I immediately started to play or share the songs with friends and casual U2 fans...Today I didn't play this song for anyone, I know the looks I would have gotten.

The "Sexy Boots" lyric is brutal...

I'm actually stunned right now I can't believe this is the first single!

You're being seriously harsh - this is in a different league to Beautiful Day or vertigo - this is a much stronger song - I think your friends will hear it anyway and be pleasantly surprised.

I think you are pigeon-holeing the band a bit - they're going to get a lot of new fans from this song.

You have got to be kidding me...This song is Stronger then Beautiful Day??

How can you think that?

IMO Boots is a second rate version of Fast Cars, which was never, nor should it have been a single.

This is the FIRST single from the new album!! Come on, this is it???

couldnt agree more...

the bottom line for me is it sounds like something from htdaab which is EXACTLY what i didnt want it to be....

10 , this is no ''poppy'' this is hard rock, some people don't understand of music.

How would you go about fitting GOYB into HTDAAB? That's quite a challenge you would be taking on. You would have to surround it with some of the heavier b-sides, and even then, it still sounds like the work of a different producer.

You could fit a lot of songs into HTDAAB because that album is really all over the place to be honest. To me there was no cohesiveness to it at all, it was an album of singles.

I like the song, but I hoped it would be more shocking. I'll just wait for losless version of the song. MP3 sound quality is killing this music. If you want to hear all the 'layers' that's been talking about, then wait for the full quality version.
I think the song will grow in the coming weeks, but a killer like Beautiful day, Vertigo or The Fly it will never be.:hmm::hmm:
