It's too bad that McCain's experiences as a POW are discounted, particularly by some of the people who don't support him. I think it gives McCain a unique perspective on the real costs of war. And what wars are worth waging.
i think it's less that they are discounted and more that they've been disproved as automatic qualifiers for the presidency.
i know it's unpopular, but i think his experiences as a POW work against my estimation of his qualification. i have respect for the man, can't imagine what he went through, but i do question his temperance. i say this as someone who has suffered from a degree of PTSD in the past year, and my issue isn't even a whisper of what McCain went through. he can't not be scarred. he can't not be damaged.
his judgment on the Iraq war and his enthusiasm for a confrontation with Iran ultimately belie your point above, and the Palin pick undermines any notion that McCain is a serious candidate with serious positions on anything, whether it be war, peace, taxes, or infrastructure.
