Bonogirl777 06-26-2008 12:37 AM

I was job shadowing this year so I job shadowed a college student and they were taking music theory. I sat through it....it seemed like a waste of time...

...but if Edge could teach me everything...I'd remember it MUCH easier!!!

Galeongirl 06-26-2008 10:39 AM

sadly I barely got music at highschool (only two years) but now my bassteacher is gradually teaching me some of the theory aswell... seeing as he is a music teacher I should be learning the good stuff

very cool, i was thinking of doing it, i mean im just enrolling as a freshman this year so i have plenty of time to change majors but theory was what really stopped me.

yeah, it would be pretty hard to concentrate though

digitize 06-29-2008 08:44 PM

I actually wish my high school offered a music theory class... maybe I should just take piano back up or take guitar up and learn it that way.

Grad school for a PhD in musicology, then eventually a professorship at some university.

I just like writing about music, and this is a good way to get to do that for a living...

Galeongirl 06-30-2008 03:47 PM

I realised last saturday that I can actually tune by ear now  I didn't even know I could! ok, I needed the piano for the first time, but it was a new string on my friends guitar and it kept going out of key really fast (damn those stupid new nylon strings!) so I had to keep tuning, and I just played Sunday Bloody Sunday and automatically tuned it :D
Learning stuff in lessons >>> learning theory!

the rockin edge 06-30-2008 11:15 PM

music theory is essential, unless you're like some supergifted musician who just makes stuff up and it sounds great.
ive taken one theory course and while it may not have been the most fun thing in the world, when i actually started applying the stuff to my playing/writing music the difference was noticeable.

rattleandhumgir 07-01-2008 08:28 PM

It's alot easier if you can sight read too...session work will probably just fall into your lap...if ya want to do that sort of thing...but for me up to now..readin notation is hard...but in time I hope it becomes easeir

Hmm, I have an M.A. (hons.) in musicology but can´t get myself to study again to do the PhD. To be professor you´ll need a list of publications, first work assistance for a couple of years etc.

If you ever pass by I can show you our institute of musicology, and the phonogram archive which happens to be the oldest in the world.

I specialized in ethnomusicology and the music industry, then I started my indie label. What are you interested in?
