impy13 01-16-2008 09:05 PM

Very yes!

If I don't go anywhere for Spring Break, I'm going to try to catch that SXSW show.

u2popmofo 01-16-2008 09:16 PM

Schweet.

lazarus 01-16-2008 09:42 PM

They should just name the album "Better Than Wilco".

u2popmofo 01-16-2008 09:53 PM

Yeah, but Fall Out Boy could even do that.

HEYO

I kid.

Anu 01-17-2008 05:37 AM

Hopefully, the Jacket will be back at the roo this year.

I predict the band gets the Saturday night Which Stage slot that the Lips had last year.

powerhour24 01-19-2008 08:43 PM

Excellent news.

thetitans2k 01-20-2008 02:11 AM

Who is my morning jacket? what should I be listening to by them?

Z

Or, you could always try their live album Okonokos, which is a great overview, plus they play most of Z.

lazarus 01-20-2008 04:21 PM

Ahh, I'd go with At Dawn, personally, or It Still Moves.

Z shows some progression and experimentation, but I don't know if it's the definitive album from the band. It certainly doesn't represent their entire output as much as the other two.

Of course "We were raised by pink leprechauns" would be almost as likely.

BonoIsMyMuse 01-20-2008 05:35 PM

MMJ is one of those bands I've heard a lot about and have been meaning to check out. I loved Jim James's contribution to the I'm Not There soundtrack. I think I'll use part of one of the iTunes gift cards I got for Christmas to pick up one of their albums. I'm leaning toward Z, but I'd appreciate suggestions.

impy13 01-20-2008 05:41 PM

I'd recommend starting with It Still Moves. That's what got me into them.

Of course, that's not saying At Dawn and Z aren't fantastic. They are.

lazarus 01-20-2008 07:11 PM

I can't imagine a more seductive hook for a new listener than the first 3 songs of It Still Moves. The album is too long and could lose a couple tracks, but when it's on it is ON.

If you don't like 'Off the Record', I don't like you!

Fo realz

I just bought "Z" and am listening to it right now.

Gideon....

Thank goodness for the real music lovers here on interference...you keep this old man listening to great stuff I'd not have come across on my own. Thanks....

impy13 01-21-2008 01:24 PM

Dondante = bliss. It's a scientific fact.

I drove 2 1/2 hours each way to see MMJ in Houston on Monday. The new songs are all so sweet. Great stuff coming from The Jacket in 2008.

O is the One That Is Real live from Okokonos (?) is probably one of my favorite songs of all time.....just blew me away

and that Highly Suspicious song from the rolling stone sxsw clip is pretty damn interesting

Go there to download the first track from Evil Urges, which shares that name.

I love it. Like really love it. This will be the album of the year.

LMP 04-20-2008 06:00 PM

It's the '90s, btw.

GirlsAloudFan 04-20-2008 06:08 PM

Does anyone know if the Evil Urges album cover has been seen yet?

I really like the one with the bear on it, and whatever the hell that was on the cover of Z.

I'm diggin' the song too, thanks for the link.

GirlsAloudFan 04-20-2008 06:35 PM

BTW, my top three MMJ songs are:

1. Golden
2. Off the Record
3. One Big Holiday

I'm sure you guys were dying to know that information, so I've provided it for you.

Anu 04-21-2008 07:44 AM

I cannot wait for the record or for the first show: Midnight Saturday at Bonnaroo.

zoopop 04-21-2008 09:47 AM

I don't want to get anyone (or interference) in trouble, but the entire album leaked this morning.

If you decide to download, don't forget to support MMJ by purchasing the album June 10th

impy13 04-21-2008 04:24 PM

It's only 128 kbps, so I was reluctant to listen to it. I like my first listens to be in lossless or at least a really high bitrate. I couldn't resist for this one, though.

Six songs in and I've enjoyed every one. "Highly Suspicious" is so, so cool.

The OOTS 04-22-2008 09:23 PM

Yikes!
This isn't the MMJ I've grown to love.
What's with the weird falsettos and the funky soul beats??

Double Yikes!! Maybe it needs to soak in.....

powerhour24 04-23-2008 03:21 PM

I've heard the title track which is amazing, the instrumentation is very MMJ, but Jim James sounds so different.

impy13 04-23-2008 04:21 PM

You barely recognize ole Jimmy on this one.

I still haven't listened to the whole thing, though. I got as far as Sec Walkin before I decided to wait for better audio quality.

lazarus 04-23-2008 04:41 PM

Just think, if this was 1987 we'd be buying the cassette and it would sound like shit.

I'll be back, I've got an evil urge to go download something.

This is not Wilco. This is not Sky Blue Sky.

This is My Morning Jacket. This is better.

I am seriously LOVING this shit.

What fucking BALLS.

Why do you have to quote Lance's Mom everywhere you go?

Seriously, give it a rest.

I can't wait to torrent this cracking album.

phanan 04-23-2008 08:22 PM

I think I'll wait for a better quality version.

gohaw 04-23-2008 08:29 PM

Highly Suspicious is horrid.

There's only falsetto dominating 2 tracks, the title track, and the piss poor "Highly Suspicious."

After that it kinda settles into a nice progression from Z.

There is a high quality rip out there.

I may have jumped the gun a bit. While the first 3 songs are 'different' from classic MMJ, I agree the album settles into more of the MMJ style. I can't help but think of some of the songs sound like mediocre Flaming Lips knockoffs. I still think it's nowhere near previous efforts. Having seen MMJ live and enjoying most of their studio stuff, I really had high hopes for this record.

Highly Suspicious is horrid. I think that originally made me think WTF? on first listen.

lazarus 04-23-2008 10:10 PM

Obviously this album is going to separate the true believers from the people that want to put MMJ in a box. I'm liking this a lot better than Z, which had a few great songs but as a whole was rather unsubstantial.

Highly Suspicious is awesome. I love that the band isn't afraid of recording a WTF song that is going to alienate people.

I first heard of MMJ when they opened for the “Doves”. There progression as a band is amazing. I do enjoy Evil Urges. I was one of the first to hear most these songs live in Houston TX. But at the same time, the mystery that was in Tennessee Fire, At Dawn & It Still Moves is not there for me in Z or this album. By mystery, I mean the stuff that made you really get lost in their music.

I do enjoy Urges more than Z though. And Highly Suspicious works live and have just been a B-side. Feels like I'm listening to the "Weird Science" soundtrack.

Vice versa. I'm happy to have impy on my side.

impy13 04-24-2008 10:54 AM

Yes, Highly Suspicious is truly awesome. Peanut butter pudding surprise, indeed.

But there's no high quality rip out there. 192 kbps is definitely not high quality. I was thinking more along the lines of VBR or even a nice lossless.

The OOTS 04-24-2008 10:59 AM

There's a 256k VBR out there.

phanan 04-24-2008 11:00 AM

Awesome. This will be my featured download this evening then.
