top twelve songs of 2004

very simple idea here but i don't believe it's been done? perhaps it has, and i've forgotten about it, my apologies if that's indeed the case.

anyway, my favourite song of the year is really more of a personal thing with the song i had at the time. funny thing is that feeling never goes away. every time i hear it, it's like i'm back in spring of 2004...

loscil's "the grid" is my favourite song of the year. probably not the "best", but my favourite.

now, contrary to that method of creating a top twelve list, i'm gonna pick the 12 BEST singles of 2004. not necessarily my favourites, though of course it'll certainly help in being biased whether anyone likes to admit it or not.

the walkmen - the rat: rock song of the year, no question about it.

franz ferdinand - take me out

franz ferdinad - darts of pleasure

modest mouse - float on

britney spears - toxic

stars - ageless beauty

the strokes - the end has no end

tegan and sara - walking with a ghost

n.e.r.d. - she wants to move

snoop dogg - drop it like it's an ipod

broken social scene - almost crimes

snow partrol - run

-----

alright, i'm missing a lot of songs. this list will be revised fo shizzle.

Well, I don't know about 'best', but these are those that I think really arrested me as being very good last year:

1. Belle & Sebastian - 'Your Cover's Blown' (from the Books EP, and the best song released this year)
2. Ash - 'Starcross'd'
3. Graham Coxon - 'Bittersweet Bundle Of Misery'
4. Jens Lekman - 'You Are The Light'
5. Franz Ferdinand - 'Take Me Out'
6. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - 'Nature Boy'
7. Jay-Z - '99 Problems'
8. Modest Mouse - 'Float On'
9. The Streets - 'Dry Your Eyes'
10. REM - 'Leaving New York'
11. U2 - 'Vertigo'
12. The Charlatans - 'Loving You Is Easy'

Good enough for ya?

edit: list not in order, except for #1.

Zoomerang96 01-09-2005 01:33 AM

ah!!! 99 problems by jay z, as well as dust your shoulder off....

can't believe i forgot those two.

and i was gonna throw in the b&s song, but i thought it was a b-side! isn't it though??

regardless, it's flat out incredible. i probably should have listed it anyway.

yertle-the-turtle 01-09-2005 01:42 AM

Actually come to think of it, you're probably right about it's B-side status. It's one heck of a song though.

I guess you can replace it with '99 Problems' at the head of that order. I can't think of a 12th song to make up the numbers though.
