Pasadena 2 Setlist Party: Better Than the Billboard Music Awards

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Oh man, if that had been my only show, I would have cried to miss ASOH.

But sounds like it was a great show, and I like that they're playing with the encore order

At any large gig you go to, it's amazing how many people stream out at the end of the main set. I was amused when I saw The Cure to note how many people exited at each encore break - especially as it was the last encore that had some of the biggest hits!

The setlist needs to be

1-7: ramp up
8-18: JT
-break-
19-22: encore.

I went to the Santa Clara show and even the five song ramp up wasn't enough. Oddly enough, I think it might even work better with no ramp up vs. a short one. The encore needs to be more fun since JT the backhalf is so pensive and moody.

But honestly, if they keep playing like they did last night, I'll be a happy fan. Glad I tuned in.

We were left of the mixing desk and noticed most of the folks on the platform like Cindy Crawford & family, and Jimmy Kimmel cleared out well before the end. Perhaps for an after party with the boys?

Listened in last night and the B-man was definitely tuned in. Sounded great. Favorable review from a normally snarky blog right here:

Wow. very cool to see from COS. I was just thinking earlier, that almost every review i'm reading, sort of gives a mention of the SOI/Apple thing, but kind of excuses it and doesn't talk about it negatively.
Glowing reviews of the shows so far.
This may go a long way to get U2 back to a better place for SOE release.

Just got back from both shows. What an amazing weekend. I'm about to take a long and much needed nap, but wanted to clarify some things because I read through both setlist parties for the weekend.

1. We basically all lost service as soon as we went in the stadium. Hence the lack of good Mixrs and Periscopes.

2. I was at main stage both nights, and during the last few songs of the first night, we saw a crew member frantically rushing back and forth several times from the main stage to the tree. We didn't understand why until the show ended and those at the tree told us that Bono's teleprompter cut out for the last few songs. This is why we speculated the new song got cut night one, especially because it was on that night's set list.

3. The story of the line jumpers at main stage last night: There were two stories. The first was of the couple who went to the second row behind the rail. I was a few people away from them, and yes, hysteria broke out among fans. But for the record, the person who pushed them was a random drunk guy behind them who probably got caught up in the upheaval around him. Not a big U2 fan getting physical. Just a drunk. That couple was eventually escorted out because they were getting physical with those around them, and were belligerent.

There was also a lady who jumped to behind us on the rail, but she got lucky that all the craziness was happening to the line jumpers a few people away, and she didn't get nearly as much grief. I was the only person willing to talk to her calmly, and kept the fans away from her who were trying to bitch to her. I told the fans around her who were trying to get into it with her, you can tell venue security to come talk to her, but the venue will make the call on what happens to her, and we should let the venue handle her however they see fit instead of trying to crack this poor woman. (She was a BITCH though. Really rude.) At one point, I stopped a fan who was trying to argue with her by looking the fan in the eye and saying "Leave it" sternly, and she got the message and walked away.

I'm not a fan of line jumpers, but come on.

Apparently there were line jumpers at the tree stage too, but I couldn't tell ya what happened there. But PD seems to have gotten involved. We only dealt with venue security at the main stage.

4. This show really is visually spectacular. Night one though, the screen was having technical problems. During the video of the Muslim woman, (during MS I think) there was a big black block taking up a bit of the screen that kept leaving and coming back. Not good.

I do have to say, the lack of screens on both ends of the main screen is really an oversight. I can't imagine what people coming to see U2 in the stands were thinking, not being able to see a thing happening on stage. And all the visuals of the band on stage are intentionally distorted, black and white, not clear,...

I can't wait for all of you to experience this show in person. I was really blown away. Yeah, they're clearly working to resolve the set list issues they can't seem to shake off. But it's such a stunning show to watch that I don't care.

Yes, the cowgirl is Morleigh.

Black Hole Sun on Night One was astonishing. One of the most powerful concert moments I've ever experienced. Just a sea of people singing, peoples' phone lights waving. Just stunning.

I'm open for questions if anyone feels like asking!

I just remembered, the b stage was configured differently on night 2. Anyone have any comparison pics?

Yeah that intermittent black block was a bummer. We had this image in our heads of some guy behind the screen frantically wiggling wires, then suddenly hearing on his radio "Thats it! Hold it right there, don't move!"

Yes that's what I thought too! Gave me chills.

I KNEW they'd drop ASOH eventually. That's the kind of weak f*cking thing they do these days.

Hopefully it makes it back into the setlist by the time they get to London...or this was just a one night aberration. Never said this in my life, but seriously, damn this band can be lame. If they could find a way to get out of playing JT in its entirety, they'd do that as well.

redhill was right...their heart isn't in this tour.

Nick's quarterly plea to keep his street cred with the trolls.

I don't think that dropping anything, or changing up the setlist a bit during a 2 night stand should be read into so much. I'm sure ASOH will be back for the one nighter in Houston, as will Little Things.

Nick, TBH the song was great to hear live but the arrangement they gave it was very odd. Kind of a tempo break in an otherwise energetic opening set. They should have gone with the WAIA version as they did with Bad, at least in Seattle.

They drop songs all the time in the early tour stages. No big deal.

I'm gonna disagree, as someone who just did both shows this weekend. I don't know that the whole band is feeling this tour. But Bono is feeling the HELL out of this tour. Both nights, when he came to the main stage for Streets, and saw the whole floor jumping, he was mouthing "Wow" and "Oh My God." And he is SO into the JT songs. He's having a blast.

Someone above me said the ASOH arrangement is weird, and I agree. I'm not sure why they're not just performing it in its entirety, as it sounded on the album. (They cut out "And we live... Of its own," which, of course, is my favorite verse in the song.)

Watching a YouTube clip of the album straight through from this night. Couple of thoughts:

1. It's great to hear Streets in the context of the album and not a cause. All of the big 3 really.

2. These are faithful presentations of the album performances, tho some might have a subtle twist.

3. Best ISHFWILF since 1987.

4. Side 2 they really heat up. Bono sounds great.

5. Most important- the BAND sounds great.

I'm super excited for CHI.

I was there and agree with all of your points.

I am glad I wasn't the only one who found the performances, especially vocally, to be outstanding!
