Sitting in Basel, waiting for a train to take me back home to Denmark.
I stayed away from everything U2 related for two weeks, which was an incredible test of endurance, but boy, was it worth it. I can still hear him scream TO-RI-NO! during Return of the Stingray Guitar, which was incredible. Best opening. EVER. EVER. I was dumbfounded, here was Bono, new haircut, new sunglasses, jumping and dancing around with a new song a the opener, it was spectacular. I exploded. There are no words for the surprise, for the sensation. I think that was the highlight almost. One of the greatest moments in the eight U2 concerts I've seen.
The next couple of songs was pure joy, nothing I hadn't heard before, but it was so clear to me that the band was having a great time. Mysterious Ways truly set the house on fire.
And another two new songs: North Star was beautiful, Glastonbury was rocking, those moans from Bono in the beginning was pure, raw power, reminded me of when I saw the Slane Castle video for the first time many years ago, Bono screaming from the tops of his lungs just before Elevation starts. I was truly great.
The rest of the concert followed quite predictably, or, well, Unforgettable Fire and onwards. I love In A Little While, so I was very pleased to hear it, Miss Sarajevo was great to hear again, a big surprise, but it was far from the highlight of the show. That, I think, was Crazy Tonight, the Discothèque snippet was pure magic, screaming LET GOOOOO - DIS-CO-THÈQUE from the top of my lungs was pure extacy. Amazing performance. Walk On was great, and definitely felt more natural without the mask part. It was a great performance of One, and I love that they kept Amazing Grace -> Streets, so great to hear it in person, even if Bono forgot the lyrics
On to the HUGE SURPRISE, that was of course HMTMKMKM - wow wow wow, great performance, so great to hear it, I've never been huge on the song, but I love it, and it was definitely a huge surprise. But seeing that take the place of Ultraviolet only makes me want the true return of Discothèque even more. Man oh man, that snippet did wonders.
Overall fantastic concert, I was so happy I actually managed to stay away from Interference all this time. I can't wait for Horsens.
Let me just say this again: Return of the Stingray Guitar was incredible. Best opener ever.
