U2 Tour 2009: Setlist

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
OK, I'd just like to see how bad a set I can make - the kind of greatest hits set that I dread U2 playing. A few of the most radio-friendly new songs, a swag of hits for the beer-swilling bogan who came to the gig just because he likes playing Elevation loud when he's drunk, and the usual concert regulars that U2 have been playing into the ground for the last two decades. How bad can it be?

1. No Line On The Horizon
2. Vertigo
3. Get On Your Boots
4. Mysterious Ways
5. Beautiful Day
6. SYCMIOYO
7. Angel Of Harlem
8. Crazy Tonight
9. Elevation
10. Until The End Of The World
11. New Year's Day
12. Bullet The Blue Sky
13. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
14. Where The Streets Have No Name
15. Magnificent
16. Pride

17. Breathe
18. Desire
19. Sunday Bloody Sunday

20. City Of Blinding Lights
21. One
22. With Or Without You

I ... think I'd still enjoy it. And I'd like to believe U2 wouldn't play a set quite this Greatest Hitsy.

I can't imagine them playing something like that Ax. The past two tours have been far too similar for them to do it again. I'd expect some major changes - perhaps not as major as Zoo TV, but major none the less.

I'd like to hope they'll avoid something such as what I posted. It relies on all the setlist cliches that U2 really need to move away from. With the notable exception of Popmart, Pride has been at or very near the end of the main set since 1984! And One in the encore? WOWY closing an encore? Streets as the Big Moment near the end of the main set? Bullet and UTEOTW as the non-single offerings to the fans who've heard them more than most singles? The UTEOTW --> NYD segue? Etc. It's been done, U2.

So now I'm going to try to make something avoiding those cliches, but sticking with songs that are realistic, or that I think fit in with a relevant kind of vibe. And with some rotational options for multi-night stands.

1. No Line On The Horizon
2. Magnificent
3. Beautiful Day
4. I Will Follow / Out Of Control / Gloria
5. Even Better Than The Real Thing / The Fly
6. Get On Your Boots
7. Crazy Tonight
8. Angel Of Harlem / ISHFWILF
9. Stay / One
10. White As Snow / Cedars Of Lebanon
11. New Year's Day
12. Please
13. Sunday Bloody Sunday
14. The Electric Co.
15. Last Night On Earth / Gone
16. HMTMKMKM / Love Is Blindness

17. LAPOE
18. Breathe
19. Mysterious Ways
20. AIWIY

21. Where The Streets Have No Name
22. A Sort Of Homecoming / WITS
23. Bad

Man, Please --> SBS --> TEC --> Gone --> LIB to end the main set would be fucking intense, and totally breaks the usual mould of how U2 end their setlists.

Alright, I'll give this a shot and try to keep it somewhat realistic.

1. Magnificent
2. No Line On The Horizon
3. Get On Your Boots
4. Vertigo
5. The Fly/Mysterious Ways
6. Breathe
7. Crazy Tonight
8. A Sort of Homecoming/The Unforgettable Fire
9. Kite/All I Want Is You/Your Blue Room
10. White As Snow (acoustic)
11. Gone/Dirty Day/Exit
12. Sunday Bloody Sunday/New Year's Day
13. With or Without You/One
14. Bad/Running to Stand Still
15. Moment of Surrender
16. Where the Streets Have No Name
17. Beautiful Day

18. City of Blinding Lights/Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car
19. Stand Up Comedy
20. I Will Follow/Gloria/11 O'Clock Tick Tock

FEZ Intro
21. Unknown Caller
22. One Tree Hill/Stay/Love is Blindness
23. Cedars of Lebanon

I'm pretty sure that every album is represented here along with every track from NLOTH except Being Born. I think this could be a semi-possible set.

Intro - Fez
1. No Line On The Horizon
2. Get On Your Boots
3. Breathe
4. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
5. Vertigo
6. Beautiful Day
7. Pride (In The Name Of Love) / I Still Haven't Found
8. New Year's Day
9. One
10. Sunday Bloody Sunday / Bad
11. Unknown Caller
12. The Unforgettable Fire / A Sort Of Homecoming
13. Bullet The Blue Sky / Mysterious Ways
14. Stand Up Comedy
15. White As Snow
16. Where the Streets Have No Name
17. Magnificent
-----------------
18. Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me / Discotheque
19. Mofo
20. With Or Without You / Ultra Violet
----------------
21. City of Blinding Lights
22. I Will Follow
23. All I Want Is You
24. Moment Of Surrender

That is as good as I can get whilst being realistic. I reckon it'll start very NLOTH-heavy and then break in the warhorses, shaking it up a bit with some of the rare-U.Fire numbers, a nice upbeat funky section with BTBS or MW and Stand Up Comedy before bringing it down with White As Snow which would segue into Streets which would then carry on into Magnificent.

Since we had the Zoo/AB encore on the last tour I think we'll see a Pop resurgence with Ultra Violet maybe thrown in to please the hardcore. Second encore will see I Will Follow as a surprise burst of energy and then end on a jubilant high with All I Want Is You and MOS's organs playing out till the end.

Opener: FEZ, with some cool Zoo TV-style stuff happening onstage.
Main Set: NLOTH (All of it, straight through. White as Snow/Cedars could be done by Bono and Edge on the B-stage, and Being Born could be played without FEZ since it was used as the opener. NLOTH is a "real album", not a collection of songs, after all...)

Since NLOTH is only about an hour long, let's give them three encore sets:
Encore One: Hits from the '80s and '00s. Hey, they've just played a whole album straight through, let 'em do something more "normal"...
1) Where The Streets Have No Name
2) Vertigo
3) Elevation
4) New Year's Day
5) I Will Follow
Alternates: City Of Blinding Lights; Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own

Encore Two: Some songs from the Achtung/Zooropa/POP era.
1) The Fly
2) Mysterious Ways
3) Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
4) Ultraviolet (Light My Way)
5) HMTMKMKM
Alternates: Last Night On Earth; Zoo Station

Encore Three: A couple random songs to wrap things up.
1) The Unforgettable Fire
2) One
Alternates: A song from their "mellow" album, if it comes out mid-tour like Zooropa did; Kite

13. One (Acoustic)
I think you've found the solution to the One argument. Casual fans are happy because they played One, hardcore fans are happy because they've mixed things up...I like this. I like this a lot. :D

While some of those lists look good, I’d rather them drop SundayBS, New Years Day, and others which are played out IMO. Bring back some older great stuff like

Wire
Seconds
One Tree Hill
Trip Through Your Wires
Red Hill Mining Town!
Hawkmoon

The trouble is that by now U2 just have too many great songs, they willl have to drop some classics from the set in order to try and satisfy everyone's appetites. Personally as you can see from my setlist, I don't think we'll see many songs from Boy/October/War simply cos they gave us a treat on Vertigo with regard to them. I'd like to see more from Achtung Baby and Pop potentially. I also don't reckon we'll see anything like The Fly, Sometimes, Zoo Station, Miss Sarajevo, Elevation, Running to Stand Still - simply because they were long-running staples of the last tour.

I would love to see them have the courage to only play Vertigo every other night, alternated with Beautiful Day maybe -but I think we know that won't happen.

And what U2 tour is complete without me bitching about One no matter how it's played?

Bono should do what he did during New Zooland and snippet OTH during One - every night - teasing you, while never actually playing the full song. Just for you, Ax.

I suppose it'd be fitting revenge for what I claimed Bono did during One (snippet) / One Tree Hill at the Kunstmuseum!

Oh! I always love to create set lists, so here's one with the new songs. :)

Ok... I've been very economical with the classic ones, they should be 8, I've listed just 6, and deliberately kick out Pride from the set list.

1. Intro with FEZ "Let me in the sound" / the country's hymn / Get On Your Boots
2. Vertigo
3. Stand Up Comedy
4. Gone (?) - it would be PERFECT here, but I thing it's not gonna happen.
5. Elevation
6. Breathe
7. No Line On The Horizon
8. New Year's Day
(On a last option, Pride could be played by now)
9. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
10. Moment of Surrender
11. White as Snow - semi acoustic (Bono + Adam) - only on my dreams.
12. Wave of Sorrow - acoustic or full band, wherever...
13. Stay (Faraway, So Close!) - acoustic
14. Where The Streets Have No Name
15. City Of Blinding Lights
16. Please - The present powerful Bono's voice, makes this song indispensable.
17. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
18. One
19. Walk On - actually I believe Walk on will take turns with Unknown Caller to close concerts.

does everyone really want COBL to survive? a lot are putting it in there setlists. i liked it on vertigo, but I hope it doesn't make to this tour.

I really wish Walk On, Kite, Beautiful Day, COBL, and OOTS survive, with a couple of Pop tracks, but I doubt it, if we got those once in awhile it would be nice (BD and COBL will happen though).

Also drop Elevation, Desire, and BTBS (it fell flat last time, although it worked during Elevation) and have a rotation of older tracks like some non-singles from Achtung Baby, Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree. Exit, Stay, In God's Country, A Sort of Homecoming, Please, Love is Blindness, One Tree Hill these are the sort of tracks that need to be relived.

Also, I think we're all still upset about never getting Electrical Storm, if anyone gets to ask a question at a Q+A, this needs to be brought up!

I don't agree with these. Like I typically say, anything is possible but I see these as complete guesses at this point and unlikely. Especially Red Hill Mining Town.

Of course, I'm sure you are reporting from rehearsals with your inside connection like the Vertigo tour, right?????? ;) :applaud:
