Will they sell out stadiums in the USA?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Those $30 seats in Qualcomm would absolutely suck because of the stadium's layout, and a lot of people are familiar enough with the place to know that. It is probably one of the reasons that U2 only drew 30,000 people to the venue in 1997 (in spite of more affordable high-end ticket prices).

Like I mentioned before, their drawing power would almost certainly be better if they put the stadium show at Petco Park. It wouldn't be much worse than the stadium set-up in Milan:

(I'm still thinking that, 60-40, chances are that they do arenas in 2010.)

San-Siro-u2-2009.jpg

The majority of those noseblead tickets were 52.50 or $37.50 in 1997. But adjusted for inflation, the lowest prices on the 2009 tour are $22 dollars adjusted to 1997 prices. So cheaper tickets, + the band being twice as popular as they were for POPMART in general, and I think they will do just fine.

Again, they are going to be playing stadiums in Raliegh North Carolina, Charlottsville Virginia and Norman Oklahoma. I think they can handle San Diego California.

Their not going to downsize a small part of the tour just to play a few arena shows in the United States.

My prediction: the 2009 stadium tour will tank in most cities (including the ones you mentioned), and that is why the entire 2010 tour will be in arenas.

I'm in San Diego and this is of course only friend of a friend type information so it's nothing to bank on, but I did hear that Petco Park has been seriously considered, not Qualcomm. This person (a Petco Park employee) really believed they will play there. So what you said pudgie_child about Petco, does make sense. But who knows!
Personally I'd just be happy if they come to San Diego wherever they play!

For Detroit they should just play Wolverine Stadium. it seats 100,000 and why not sell 60,000 cheap seats just to fill the place and get good PR and maintain per-show revenue.

I thought about that once too, but I don't think the stadium has the access necessary for the stage crew.

Plus, Ford Field is one of the best football stadiums in the county, professional or college.

It would be the first ever outdoor U2 show in Michigan. And maybe the first outdoor show within short diving distance in Joshua??

When Bruce or the Stones played Fenway park they had to crane some of the gear over the stands.

Does the tie in with Live Nation mean that U2 are compelled to play certain stadiums? My understanding is that for an arena tour of the US there are certain arenas that would be on / off the agenda depending on who is doing the ticketing. Are stadiums the same?

I'm a bit skeptical about the chances the stadiums in certain markets will sell out. BUT, it remains to be seen how U2 is perceived by the public. The Rolling Stones and Springsteen sell loads of tickets to people who have no interest in buying their newest album (and their albums sell without any big single airplay), it's their reputation as legendary artists who put on great live shows that get the tickets sold. Does U2 have the same cache? I guess we'll see (though I doubt RS and BS would try to play a stadium in Norman, OK.)

For a stadium show, the majority of people there to see U2 fall into the category of concert goer described above.

Working from rough estimates: Say there's a core of at most 15,000 'real' fans then the remainder, which would be at least that number again and sometimes a lot more, are there for the 'show' rather than to see U2 play their new album.

U2 know this and design their setlists around it. And that is the source of so many arguments in this forum!

My predicted schedule won't be exact but it should be pretty close to how the tour will turn out. Nearby markets that aren’t getting hit will obviously contribute to the overall GROSSES in the centralized markets that are being hit.

2/3 of the shows will be full.

What we should concentrate on here are the GROSSES. The attendances, venue capacities & ticket prices can be adjusted, in relation to and based on what the GROSSES are.

I'd like to make a few revisions to my predicted schedule...

Atlanta, LA, Denver & Madison have been revised.

I have a feeling Oakland will have two shows, but only one will sell out. I think that's what happened with PopMart, if I recall.

I agree with most of your predictions, but for each city, you've basically chosen either "sold out" or "about half empty." I think there will be a fair amount of shows at about 80% - 90% capacity.

I'd like to make a few revisions to my predicted schedule...

Some of your numbers are pretty bizarre.

Why, for instance, would the average ticket price be $121 at the Rose Bowl and only $81 at Giants Stadium?

Why do you say that the capacity of FedEx Field would only be 75,000 when it has a football seating capacity of over 91,000?

Why do you think that the attendance in Dallas and Houston will be so exceedingly low? Do you really think that there are less U2 fans in Dallas than in Oklahoma City or Charlottesville?

And 2010 is so speculative that it isn't even worth discussing yet . . . but Halifax? Really?

Pure gobbledygook!

And 2010 is so speculative that it isn't even worth discussing yet . . . but Halifax? Really?

Indeed. Two shows in Edmonton, but nothing in Indianapolis or Cincinnati or the whole darn state of Texas??? :coocoo:

Detroit sells out, but St Louis and Cleveland aren't even half full?

My prediction: the 2009 stadium tour will tank in most cities (including the ones you mentioned), and that is why the entire 2010 tour will be in arenas.
Tank? They did sell out two 55,000 seat shows in Gothenburg, Sweden in one day, you know.

Now I doubt the show in Norman, OK will sell out, but I also doubt that'll cause them to alter their plans.

cleazer, didn't you know? Selling 60,000 tickets in Amsterdam in 15 minutes is tanking!

Tank? They did sell out two 55,000 seat shows in Gothenburg, Sweden in one day, you know.

Now I doubt the show in Norman, OK will sell out, but I also doubt that'll cause them to alter their plans.

Not to be too much of an American pig, but I was speaking only of North America. I don't think there's any doubt about their popularity in Europe.

Obviously, pudgie_child and cleazer haven't studied U2's touring history very closely...

65,000 in Detroit is a far fetched dream. I definitely think the band is waiting to guage the interest and sales so a decision can be made for certain cities in the USA. Later on, an arena tour is definitely a possibility.

You can throw all the history out the window with the economic meltdown going on here. People are fearful and discretionary income is not being spent on concerts and sporting events like years past. It's 1929 all over again for alot of people. It will be quite interesting to see how the sales go.

Not everyone lives in downtown LA. A lot of people live between San Diego and LA and they don't have a 3 hour drive. You won't get as many people from Vegas or Phoenix, but you will get some. Your estimate for the number of people is simply based on what they did on previous stadium tours with concurrent shows in Phoenix, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Plus, if they think that they might have some trouble filling up a stadium in San Diego, they can make it the last show of the US tour.

As far as ticket prices, this tour has some of the lowest ticket prices U2 have ever charged.

The prices:

$250
$95
$55
$30

$30 dollars in 2009 is the equilivant of $22 dollars in 1997, $19 dollars in 1992, $15 dollars in 1987, and $14 dollars in 1985.

These $30 dollar tickets are the cheapest U2 have charged since the Unforgettable Fire Tour once you adjust for inflation.

You keep bringing up these $30 tickets. Even if they sell all of them, what is that - 10,000 per show? Big deal. What about the other 60,000? If they don't get something going with "Magnificent" or "Crazy Tonight" in the next couple of months, this album will be long forgotten by the time tickets go on sale for 2010.

well, if they do not sell out US leg 1, I propose they should skip US leg 2 and change it for a Europe leg 3...that would be fair!

Eh not really, seeing as the Bay Area is probably scheduled for leg 2 and I know they cant completely skip the Bay Area (and also other parts of the mid west!)

I'd like to make a few revisions to my predicted schedule...

.

I'm not gonna speculate on total revenue or whether shows will be sold out or half full. But, I think that if they do go ahead with stadiums on the 2nd US leg they will play Chicago, Boston, and NYC again instead of going to Madison, Hartford, and Syracuse. I also doubt they'll go to Halifax and may skip SLC, as well. Cleveland is not too far from Pittsburgh so I would suggest doing the show in Cincinnati (Columbus' stadium might be too big) to bring in fans from Indiana/Kentucky/most of Ohio.

Weak selling album? Your calling No Line On the Horizon a weak selling album?

What do you think the biggest selling albums are so far in 2009 in the USA? There have been 10 weeks in 2009 so far, about a 20% of the year. Here are the top 100 selling albums after 10 weeks:

Most of the big releases are in Q4. To suggest that NLOTH is on its way to becoming one of the biggest albums of the year because it is outselling second tier artists or artists who've had albums out for months is spurious. Pop had the best selling week in 1997 through the first week in March as well.

Interesting comments.

U2 sold out Rice Stadium in Salt Lake City on the Popmart tour in a matter of minutes, just something to think about.

There is no reason U2 should skip SLC this go around. It's one of the biggest U2 towns out there. I'd be willing to bet the per capita is probably the highest.

Reading this thread, it seems like there are several people really wanting U2 to fail with this tour.
